    The Effect on Gifted Students’ 21st-Century Skills of Supporting Science Teaching with LEGO® Education® BricQ Motion Essential and Student Opinions on this Instruction

    In many countries, individuals have started to gain 21st-century skills from an early age. In Turkey, the education of gifted students is supported with activities enriched in parallel with these skills in science and art centres. The LEGO® Education® BricQ Motion Essential Set reinforces achievements with hands-on activities in science subjects, while also improving 21st-century skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. At this point, this study aims to examine the effect of the LEGO® Education® BricQ Motion Essential Set on the 21st-century skills of gifted students in the teaching of the ‘Force and Motion’ unit and to determine the students’ views on the teaching process. The study was carried out in a science and art centre in Konya in the spring term of the 2021–2022 academic year. The sample of the study consisted of 21 gifted students studying in Support-2 programmes (4th grade). An explanatory sequential design was preferred in the study. In the quantitative data collection phase of the study, a one-group pre-test/post-test experimental design was used. Interviews were used for the qualitative data collection phase. The quantitative data of the research were analysed with the SPSS 26 statistical package program. Qualitative data were categorised according to themes and codes in accordance with content analysis. The results of the research showed that the LEGO® Education® BricQ Motion Essential Set was effective for 21st-century learning and the renewal of the skills of the gifted students participating in the research and that the students developed positive opinions about this education set. It is recommended to use LEGO® training sets to develop the 21st-century skills of gifted students

    The purpose of this study is to investigate effect of project based learning method which is supported by prediction- observation- explanation (PBL supported by POE) method on attitude and behaviour towards environmental problems. The other aim of this study is to reveal experiment group students’ views towards learning method. In this research called explanatory mixed method had been applied. In this study, Attitude Scale towards Environmental Problems, Behaviour Scale towards Environmental Problems and a semi-structured interview question are used as data collection tool. The findings obtained from the research show that there is a significant difference in favor of the experiment group among the point averages of the attitude and behavior posttest of the groups. When the findings regarding the questions posed to prospective teachers are examined, it is seen that prospective teachers explain that their attitudes towards environmental problems and behaviours aimed at preventing, eliminating those problems change positively after the application.Bu araştırmanın amacı, çevre sorunları konusunun öğretiminde, tahmin-gözlem-açıklama destekli proje tabanlı öğrenme (TGA destekli PTÖ) yönteminin çevre sorunlarına yönelik tutum ve davranışları üzerine olan etkisini araştırmaktır. Çalışmanın diğer amacı ise, deney grubu öğrencilerinin yönteme yönelik görüşlerini ortaya çıkarmaktır. Bu araştırmada açıklayıcı karma yöntem araştırma modeli kullanılmıştır. Çalışmada veri toplama aracı olarak çevre sorunlarına yönelik tutum ölçeği, çevre sorunlarına yönelik davranış ölçeği ve yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme sorusu kullanılmıştır. Araştırmadan elde edilen sonuçlar deney ve kontrol gruplarının çevre sorunlarına yönelik tutum ve davranış son test puan ortalamaları arasında deney grubu lehine anlamlı bir farklılığın olduğunu ortaya koymuştur. Öğretmen adaylarının kendilerine yöneltilen soruya verdikleri yanıtlar incelendiğinde adayların uygulama sonrasında çevre sorunlarına yönelik tutum ve sorunlarını önlemeye, gidermeye yönelik davranışlarının olumlu yönde değiştiğini açıkladığı görülmüştür

    The Impact of Educational Films on Attitude and Awareness Towards Environmental Problems

The awareness scale towards environmental problems and the attitudescale towards environmental problems were used as data collection tools in thestudy. According to the results there was a significant difference between theawareness scale mean post-test scores in favor of the experimental group. Also,the attitude scale mean post-test scores of the teacher candidates werecompared and there was no difference between the attitudes mean scores of theteacher candidates

    A sample implementation of teaching molecular structure of DNA in the classroom and the opinions of teacher candidates about it

    The purpose of this study is to carry out sample classroom applications in the teaching of the molecular structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), which is the basis of the field of molecular biology, and obtaining the opinions of teacher candidates on these applications after they are completed. This is a basic, qualitative research study. The study was conducted in the fall semester of the academic year 2021-2022 at the Faculty of Education of a state university in Ankara. The participants from whom the data were collected were determined by the convenience sampling method. The research study group consisted of 15 teacher candidates, who were third-year biology students taking the molecular biology course. The interview form, developed by the researchers themselves and containing three questions, was the data collection tool for the study. Classroom applications used for the purposes of the study span a seven-year period. Teachings and other activities throughout the process were explained in detail. Thematic analysis, one of the qualitative analysis techniques, was used to analyze the data. In this study, an exemplary teaching practice/method was developed in DNA teaching. The findings showed that teacher candidates who took part in the application had positive views about the teaching of the subject and the process. In the future, various other teaching practices for other abstract concepts in biology can be developed and the views of prospective teachers explored. The effects of these classroom practices on the academic achievements, attitudes and motivation etc. of teacher candidates can be examined

    Preoperative screening for COVID-19: Results from a clinical diagnostic laboratory

    Objective: The study aimed to determine what proportion of Turkiye’s preoperative patient population has tested positive for COVID-19 and to ascertain whether the increasing or decreasing trend in the numbers of positive preoperative patients resembles the general population of Turkiye during the same period. Materials and Methods: The study cohort involved of the 14,776 patients from various services between January 1-December 31, 2021 who needed preoperative COVID-19 test reports. The patient's SARS-CoV-2 RNA's were detected with real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technique. Results: SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR positivity was detected in 422 (2.86%) patients, of which 59.72% (n = 252) were female and 40.28% (n = 170) were male; their mean age was 40.2 years. Of the 422 positive cases, 84.12% were young adults (18-65 years), and 9% were middle-aged (66-79 years). Positive cases involving those under the age of 18 were found to account for 5.22% (n = 22) of the total. The highest positivity rate was observed in April 2021 at 8.28% of all test requests, while the lowest positivity rate was observed in June 2021, at 0.36% of all test requests. The highest positivity rate of April was followed by March (5.07%), October (4.74%), and August (3.13%). Conclusion: In conclusion, the COVID-19 RT-PCR positivity rate in the series was detected as 2.85% in preoperative patients over the one year period. Monthly positivity rates in screening results are consistent with the number of cases seen in the general population

    Determination of Candidates Teachers' Opinions on Science in Everyday Life and Family Role in Process of Education with 3-Idiots Movie as a Teaching Material

    Bu çalışma ile fen bilgisi öğretmen adaylarının 3-İdiot filmindeki fenin günlük hayatta kullanımı ve ailenin eğitim sürecindeki rolüne yönelik görüşlerini almak amaçlanmıştır. Araştırmada nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden olgubilim yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Verilerin toplandığı katılımcılar amaçlı örnekleme ile belirlenmiştir. Çalışma grubu toplam 124 öğretmen adayının bulunduğu iki tip katılımcıdan oluşmaktadır. Çalışmada veri toplama aracı olarak, 3 İdiot filmine yönelik hazırlanan 2 adet yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme sorusu kullanılmış ve veriler HyperRESEARCHTM 2.6.1. programı ile analiz edilmiştir. Çalışmanın sonucunda öğretmen adaylarının filmde gördükleri fen kavramlarının günlük hayat uygulamasına ilişkin pek çok örnekten yalnızca çok çarpıcı olan örnekleri tespit ettikleri görülmüştür. Ayrıca öğretmen adaylarının görüşleri ailenin eğitim sürecindeki baskısı ile yanlış meslek seçmeye, cinsiyete göre mesleğe yöneltmeye, başarısızlığa, psikoloji bozukluğa, kendine güven kaybına, kaygıya, kararsızlığa neden olduğunu göstermiştir.It is aimed with this study to collect the ideas of science teacher candidates about 3-Idiots movie in terms of science in everyday life and family role in process of education. This study is designed as a phenomenological research study which is among qualitative research methods. Participants whose inputs were collected are selected by purposeful sampling. Study group is consisted of two types of participants in a total of 124 teachers' candidates. As data gathering tool, two semi-structured interview questions prepared accordingly to 3-Idiots movie are used and data were analyzed with the qualitative analysis program called HyperRESEARCHTM 2.6.1. As a result of the study it was found that teacher candidates identified only very striking examples of many examples about science in everyday life in the film. In addition teacher candidates' opinions showed that teacher candidates' families in the educational process caused by to choose the wrong profession, orientation profession according to gender, failure, psychological disorder, loss of self-confidence, anxiety, instability

    Validity and Reliability of the DeMoulin Self-Concept Developmental Scale for the 36-72 Month Old Children

    The aim of this study is to investigate the reliability and validity of the DeMoulin Self-Concept Developmental Scale for 36-72 month old children. In addition, it has been attempted to examine the effects of age and gender variables on the self-concept of children. The study is in survey method. The sample consists of 810 children who attend preschools in Istanbul, Turkey. Data collection tools used in the research are; the Demographic Form, the DeMoulin Self-Concept Developmental Scale for Children, the Social Competence and Behavior Evaluation Scale-30 and the Emotion Regulation Scale. The results of the item discrimination and criteria validity analyses support the validity of the scale. It could be said that the founded Cronbach’s Alpha value of the total scale and subscales and the results of the split half method and test-retest method analyses indicate that the scale is a reliable measurement tool. In addition, it has been found that the age variable affected the self-concept scores, but the gender variable had no effect on it. The research findings are discussed within the framework of the related literature.

    Bu çalışmanın amacı ilköğretim 6.sınıf Fen ve Teknoloji dersi Vücudumuzda Sistemler ünitesinde portfolyonun, öğrencilerin başarılarına, öğrendikleri bilgilerin kalıcılığına ve başarısızlık nedenlerinin giderilmesine etkisini araştırmaktır. Araştırma Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı'na bağlı Ankara ili Çankaya ilçesi Hamdullah Suphi İlköğretim Okulu'nda öğrenim gören ve 6.sınıf öğrencilerinden oluşan iki farklı sınıfa uygulanmıştır. Bu sınıflardan birineVücudumuzda Sistemler ünitesindeki konular portfolyo ile verilirken diğerine geleneksel öğretim yöntemiyle verilmiştir. Uygulamadan önce her iki sınıfa başarı testi ve başarısızlık nedenleri anketi ön test olarak verilmiş, uygulamadan sonra ise aynı testler son test olarak uygulanmıştır. Kalıcılık testi ise her iki gruba da uygulama bitiminden 3 ay sonra verilmiştir. Çalışmanın hipotezlerini test etmek için de bağımlı t testi, bağımsız t testi ve ANOVA kullanılmıştır. Verilerin analiz sonuçları, portfolyo ile öğrenim gören deney grubu öğrencilerinin Vücudumuzda Sistemler ünitesindeki başarılarının geleneksel öğretim yöntemiyle öğrenim gören kontrol grubu öğrencilerine göre anlamlı derecede yüksek olduğunu, aynı zamanda deney grubu öğrencilerinin kontrol grubu öğrencilerine göre başarısızlık nedenlerinin giderildiğini göstermiştir. Bunun yanında kalıcılık testi sonuçları öğrenilen bilgilerin kalıcılığının deney grubundaki öğrencilerde kontrol grubu öğrencilerine göre daha fazla olduğunu göstermiştir.The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the portfolio on students' achievement, permanence of their acquired learnings and removal of their failure causes in the systems of body structures unit in sixth grade science and technology lesson in elementary school. This study is implemented on two different clases of 6th grade students in Ankara city Çankaya Hamdullah Suphi Primary School. In one of the this classes, subjects of thethe systems of body structures ünit were given portfolio, while in other class subjects of thethe systems of body structures ünit were given traditional teaching methods. Before the research application achievement test and failure causes questionnaire were given as pre test to both classes and after the application same tests were applied as a post test. Permanence test were given both groups after three months of application finished. Paired sample test, independent sample test and ANOVA was used to test study's hypothesis. The results analysis of data showed that experimental group who were taught with the portfolio had a significantly higher scores with respect to achievement related to the systems of body structures unit than kontrol group who were taught traditional teaching methods. In addition the results showed that, experimental group students the reasons of the failure were removed with respect to kontrol group. Besides, the results of permanence test showed that knowledge which is taught was more permanent in experimental group than kontrol group
