Phototherapeutic Keratectomy in Schnyder Crystalline Corneal Dystrophy

    No full text
Objective: To emphasize the effectiveness of phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) in a patient with Schnyder crystalline corneal dystrophy (SCCD). Methods: Case report. Results: Two eyes of a patient with SCCD underwent PTK. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) increased from 2/10 to 8/10 (plano/-1.50 × 10) in the right eye in a lit room. BCVA of the left eye was 4/10 (-8.00/-1.50 × 170) and did not change after treatment because of anisometropic amblyopia. No recurrence was detected after 68 months of follow-up. Conclusion: PTK may be effective in the treatment of SCCD, especially if the crystals are the cause of visual disturbance

Orbital hydatid disease: A case report

    No full text
Orbital hydatid cysts are a rare cause of proptosis and comprise only 1% of all hydatid cysts. We report a 13-year-old boy with orbital hydatid cyst and investigate radiologic, ultrasonographic and clinical aspects of the disease. The cyst was excised totally without rupture through a lateral orbitotomy approach. Hydatid cyst is endemic in some countries and sporadic cases are seen with increasing international travel

Aim: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the epidemiological and demographic features and prognosis of all patients admitted to the emergency department and followed in intensive care unit due to poisoning. Methods: We resrospectively evaluated the patients over 14 years of age, who attended to the emergency department and was followed in our intensive care unit due to poisoning, were evaluated according to their demographic characteristics, anamnesis and prognosis. Results: Of 1894 patients, who were admitted to the emergency department, 1034 were female (54.8%). The mean age was 32.76±14.88 years. 36.4% of these patients were suicide attempters. Three hundred twenty-eight patients (17.3%) were admitted to the intensive care unit. Two hundred thirty-four (17.3%) were females and the mean age was 27.98±13.87 years. Of those patients, 263 (80.2%) were treated for drug intoxications, 33 (10.1%) for carbonmonoxide (CO) intoxications, 18 (5.5%) for food intoxications, 4 (1.2%) for insecticide poisoning, 4 (1.2%) for bee sting, 3 (0.9%) for rat poison intoxications, 1 (0,3%) for alcohol intoxication, and 1 (0.3%) was treated for snakebite. 80.5% of them were suicide attempters. The most frequently taken drugs were antidepressants (25.8%). Conclusion: Intoxication cases admitted to the emergency department and intensive care unit were mostly young women, and drug overdose was the most common attempted method of suicide. The most frequent used drugs were antidepressants. In this study, we determined the patient profile of intoxication in Sivas province. (The Medical Bulletin of Haseki 2013; 51: 178-82

Purpose: To determine the anatomical and visual responses to intravitreal bevacizumab injection (IVB) monotherapy and the combination of IVB with photodynamic therapy (PDT) in neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Materials and Methods: This was a prospective study that involved treatment of naive eyes with neovascular AMD. The eyes were divided into 2 groups: the 1st group received only IVB and the 2nd group received IVB+PDT. An activity score (AS) was given to each lesion during all visits. Student's t test and chi-square test were used for the comparison of parameters. Results: A total of 53 eyes were involved in the study. Mean follow-up time was 12.3 months. There was no significant difference with respect to lesion type, visual acuity, or central foveal thickness between the groups before treatment. After treatment AS decreased significantly in the two groups (p0.05). The mean number of IVB/eye was 2.7 in group 1 and 2.6 in group 2 (p>0.05). Conclusion: IVB+PDT combination therapy seems not to be superior to IVB monotherapy with respect to visual acuity or retreatment needs in neovascular AMD. An activity scoring-guided strategy may help to determine the need for retreatments
