Since the outbreak of Syrian conflict 2011, Turkey has received more than 3.5 million refugees, including a great number of school-aged children. Providing education to Syrian child refugees has therefore become important in Turkey. To effectively deal with this issue, Turkish government has developed educational policies and legal arrangements. Establishing Temporary Education Centres providing education in Arabic based on an adapted Syrian curriculum, was one of the main changes in Turkish educational system to accommodate Syrian child refugees. This paper aims to present the current conditions and issues at TECs based on views of Syrian teachers working in these centres. The findings show that TECs have faced several challenges, which can be categorized under three themes: infrastructral, student-related, and teacher-related challenges. The issues related to each of themes are disscussed based on the views of teachers working in TECs and suggestions relevant to both policymakers and researchers are presented in this paper. © 2020, © 2020 Korean Association for Multicultural Education

The US higher education system has received significant attention from different parts of the world because of the international success of its universities. Therefore, many countries have adapted some of its features to their systems. Turkey’s system level governing board, the Council of Higher Education (CoHE), was also modeled after state level higher education boards in the USA. Given this context, the current study aims to investigate the structures and functions of the state level higher education boards in the USA, compare them with the CoHE, and make reform suggestions for higher education governance in Turkey. With this aim, one state with a consolidated governing board, Georgia, and one state with a coordinating board, South Carolina, were selected for detailed investigation and comparison. The results of the study show that there are several significant differences between the CoHE and higher education boards in the USA, both in terms of their structures and their main functions. Suggestions for higher education governance reform in Turkey are also made based on the results.ABD yükseköğretim sistemi, üniversitelerinin uluslararası başarısı nedeniyle dünyanın farklı bölgelerinden büyük ilgi görmektedir. In order to get maximum torque in the single-phase induction motor one of the methods is to use a switching capacitor in the auxiliary winding. This configuration with an electronic switch connected across the capacitor makes possible to obtain a maximum torque by using a single capacitor. Optimal capacitor values are used to obtain the maximum torque and to improve the performance of a single-phase induction motor at steady-state and transient operations. These variable capacitor values are obtained by controlling the duty cycle of the electronic switch. In this paper the dynamic model for the single-phase induction motor with the switching capacitor has been obtained by using MATLAB/Simulink software package program. Simulation results are presented to verify the high performance operation of the single-phase induction motor at transient and steady state

'Are principals instructional leaders yet?' a science map of the knowledge base on instructional leadership, 1940-2018

Abstract: In the 1980s when research on effective schools surfaced the importance of 'instructional leadership in the United States, skeptics who wondered if this would be just another educational fad. Yet, 40 years later, the expectation for school principals to be 'instructional leaders' has become ubiquitous throughout much of the world. This systematic review of research used science mapping to gain insights into the growth, geographic distribution, key documents and authors, and topics in this literature. The authors used a variety of quantitative bibliometric analyses to examine 1,206 Scopus-indexed journal articles on instructional leadership published between 1940 and 2018. The results affirm that the knowledge base on instructional leadership has not only increased in size, but also geographic scope. Contrary to expectations during the 1980s, instructional leadership has demonstrated remarkable staying power, growing into one of the most powerful metaphors guiding research, policy and practice in school leadership. Despite this finding, both author co-citation and co-word analyses revealed the emergence of 'integrated models of school leadership' in which instructional leadership is enacted in concert with dimensions drawn from complementary leadership approaches. Key themes in the recent literature include studies of leadership effects on teachers and students, contexts for leadership practice, and means of developing instructional leaders

ABSTRACT Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become an indispensable part of the 21 st century. Having basic ICT skills is now seen as an important attribute that members of the young cohort should possess in order to be successful in life. Thus, countries all over the world, including Turkey, have attempted to adjust their educational policies to this new phenomenon of ICT. In this context, this study aims to investigate the impact of both household-and school-level factors on the ICT usage of students in Turkey. Given the multilevel structure of the data, the hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) method was used for statistical analyses. The results of the analyses show that there are significant differences between schools in terms of students' ICT usage, both for entertainment and school-related tasks. These differences, however, are mostly explained by the household-level factors. The only school-related factor that seems to be important for students' ICT usage is the student's involvement in ICT-related tasks at school

Traditionally, Morus rubra L. (Moraceae) (red mulberry) and Cornus mas L. (Cornacea) (cornelian cherry) fruits are eaten fresh and are also used in marmalades, juices, jam, natural dyes in Turkey and are believed to have beneficial effects in case of multiple health issues such as antipyretic, diarrhea and intestinal parasites. However, the effects of M. rubra and C. mas on epilepsy has not been known. This study evaluates the effects of M. rubra and C. mas extracts on penicillin‑induced epileptiform activity. Sixty Wistar rats randomly divided into ten groups (n=6): control, sham, penicillin, penicillin+M. rubra extract (2.5, 5, 10, 20 mg/kg) and penicillin+C. mas extract (2.5, 5, 10 mg/kg). Epileptiform activity was induced by using penicillin (500 IU, i.c.) and electrocorticogram records (150 min) were obtained. Also, biochemical analysis in blood samples were evaluated. According to the electrocorticogram analysis, the effective dose was detected as 10 mg/kg for both C. mas and M. rubra. This dose decreased the spike frequencies of convulsions while amplitude wasn't changed by both substances. In erythrocyte studies, there were significant differences regarding nitric oxide in the control, sham and penicillin groups. There were significant differences regarding malondialdehyde in all groups. In the plasma, there were significant differences among groups regarding xanthine oxidase in the penicillin‑C. mas and penicillin‑M. rubra groups. There were differences regarding malondialdehyde in the penicillin‑C. mas and M. rubra‑C. mas groups. Both extracts reduced the frequency of epileptiform activity. After administration of the extracts malondialdehyde levels decreased also in both erythrocytes and plasma
