The current Final Degree Project (FDP) arises from the need to empower caregivers of patients diagnosed with an Eating Disorder (ED) with certain tools facilitating the treatment process and the protection of these patients. To achive this goal, we expect to levarage the advantages of digital environmets. Having assessed the market for existing and competing solutions, we concluded the existence of a market gap, translating into an opportunity for a mobile application (or APP). With the goal of validating the need and the proposed solution, a functional prototype has been developed. The tool has been organized around three modules based on the content: psychoeducation, practical strategies and self-help groups. This project aims to tackle the psychological and emotional discomfort that can be caused by the situation these caregivers face. In this way, this is carried out by compiling information about the disease, as well as showing the required skills to cope with certain scopes of the procedures regarding the treatment of the disease. Likewise, caregivers will receive psychological support coming from professionals and motivation through profession colleagues’ real-life experiences. The ultimate goal to be achieved by this project is to improve the caregivers’ life quality and, therefore, to transfer the same impact onto that of their patients. This would ultimately reduce the disorder’s recovery time and increase the effectiveness of the TCA treatment.Psicologí

This paper presents a justification for the use of MFCC parameters in automatic pathology detection on speech. While such an application has produced good results up to now, only partial explanations to this good performance had been given before. The herein exposed explanation consists of an interpretation of the mathematical transformations involved in MFCC calculation and a statistical analysis that confirms the conclusions drawn from the theoretical reasoning

Screening voice disorders with the glottal to noise excitation ratio

    Get PDF
This work evaluates the capabilities of the Glottal to Noise Excitation Ratio for the screening of voice disorders. A lot of effort has been made using this parameter to evaluate voice quality, but there do not exist studies that evaluate the discrimination capabilities of this acoustic parameter to classify between normal and pathological voices. A set of 226 speakers (53 normal and 173 pathological) taken from a voice disorders database were used to evaluate the usefulness of this parameter for discriminating normal and pathological voices. In order to evaluate this parameter, the effect of the bandwidth of the Hilbert envelopes and the frequency shift have been analyzed, concluding that a good discrimination is obtained with a bandwidth of 1000 Hz and a frequency shift of 300 Hz. The results confirm that the Glottal to Noise Excitation Ratio provides reliable measurements in terms of discrimination among normal and pathological voices, comparable to other classical long-term noise measurements found in the literature, such as Normalized Noise Energy or Harmonics to Noise Ratio, so this parameter is a good candidate to be used for screening purposes

Recombinant human interleukin-6 (IL-6/BSF-2/HSF) regulates the synthesis of acute phase proteins in human hepatocytes

AbstractRecombinant human IL-6 (rhIL-6) is a potent inducer of the synthesis of acute phase proteins in adult human hepatocytes. A wide spectrum of acute phase proteins is regulated by this mediator. After labeling of rhIL-6 stimulated human hepatocytes with [35S]methionine acute phase protein synthesis was measured by immunoprecipitation. Serum amyloid A, C-reactive protein, haptoglobin, α1-antichymotrypsin and fibrinogen were strongly induced (26-, 23-, 8.6-, 4.6- and 3.8-fold increases, respectively). Moderate increases were found for α1-antitrypsin (2.7-fold) and α1-acid glycoprotein (2.7-fold). RhIL-6 had no effect on α1-macroglobulin, whereas fibronectin, albumin and transferrin decreased to 64, 56 and 55% of controls. In the cases of serum amyloid A, haptoglobin, α1-antichymotrypsin, α1-antitrypsin and α1-acid glycoprotein, dexamethasone enhanced the action of rhIL-6. We conclude that rhIL-6 controls the acute phase response in human liver cells

AbstractThe three monokines interleukin-1β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) modulate acute phase plasma protein synthesis in adult human hepatocytes. Only IL-6 stimulates the synthesis of the full spectrum of acute phase proteins as seen in inflammatory states in humans, i.e. synthesis and secretion of C-reactive protein, serum amyloid A, fibrinogen, α1-antitrypsin, α1-antichymotrypsin and haptoglobin are increased while albumin, transferrin and fibronectin are decreased. IL-1β as well as TNFα, although having a moderate effect on the positive acute phase proteins and inhibiting the synthesis of fibrinogen, albumin and transferrin, fail to induce serum amyloid A and C-reactive protein. These data suggest that IL-6 plays the key role in the regulation of acute phase protein synthesis in human hepatocytes
