Large Scale Morphological Segregation in Optically Selected Galaxy Redshift Catalogs

We present the results of an exhaustive analysis of the morphological segregation of galaxies in the CfA and SSRS catalogs through the scaling formalism. Morphological segregation between ellipticals and spirals has been detected at scales up to 15-20 h1^{-1} Mpc in the CfA catalog, and up to 20-30 h1^{-1} Mpc in the SSRS catalog. Moreover, it is present not only in the densest areas of the galaxy distribution, but also in zones of moderate density.Comment: 9 pages, (1 figure included), uuencode compressed Postscript, (accepted for publication in ApJ Letters), FTUAM-93-2

A new strategy to design SIW-fed arrays

    Get PDF
In this work, a new full-wave strategy, with very low iteration times, is proposed for the optimization and design of antenna arrays fed by substrate integrated waveguides. The device is decomposed into fixed and modifiable (to be optimized) sections, whose generalized scattering matrices are precomputed. The response of the array is calculated by considering firstly only the interactions between the fixed sections, which are then coupled to the modifiable ones in each iteration of an optimization process. To validate the proposed strategy, a transversal 16-slot antenna array, placed on the top plate of a substrate integrated waveguide, has been designed. A speed-up factor of over 2000 times, compared to general purpose commercial software, has been obtained in this optimization process. The final design presents a 1.05 GHz bandwidth under - 10 dB in terms of |S11|, a maximum realized gain of 17.5 dBi at 17 GHz, and a 99.95% maximum efficiency (without dielectric and conductor losses). Biological protein precipitation: a green process for the extraction of cucumisin from melon (Cucumis melo L. inodorus) by-products

    Get PDF
Cucumisin (CUC) from industrial melon by-products was separated for the first time through biological precipitation using carrageenan (CRG). This approach could represent a cost-effective and environmentally friendly process for the industries, avoiding the use of expensive equipment and toxic salts or solvents, such as butanol and ethanol. In this study, biological precipitation of proteins from melon by-products using CRG was studied and compared with conventional precipitation with ammonium sulphate. Different methods were applied for the identification and characterization of isolated proteins, including SDS-PAGE gel, FPLC and proteolytic activity assays. The isolated CUC confirmed a molecular weight of 68 kDa and showed highly stable proteolytic (PA) and milk-clotting (MCA) activities in a wide range of CaCl2 (20 to 60 mM), pH (5 to 7) and temperatures (30 to 85 ºC). Melon peel extract demonstrated to possess significant PA (4.24 U/mg protein) and MCA (191.50 MCU/mg protein), but such values were increased by ammonium sulphate precipitation (1.60 and 2.06-folds, respectively), and specially a noticeable increment was observed by biological precipitation with 2.11 and 17.65-folds, respectively, demonstrating the capability to be an effective strategy to isolate and purify CUC, allowing a yield of 0.17 g CUC/100 g of by-products and keeping its biological properties.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Movimiento de sodio y potasio en intestino delgado de conejo

    Get PDF
The movement of sodium and potassium has been studied in terminal ileum and proximal jejunum of anaesthetized rabbits. The absorption of sodium in terminal ileum increases witht the Intraluminal concentration, absorbing th'is cation against concentration gradients, from levels as low as 55 mEq/ l. The movement of sodium is related to that of chloride, in such a way that there appears to exlst a dependence between the transportation of both ions. The situation in the jejunum is comparatively similar, although the absorption of sodium is generally greater in the ileum than in the jejunum. It appears that the movementt of potassium in both parts of the intestine studied occurs through a simple passive process

The chloride and bicarbonate movement in ileum and jejunum has bfen studied. The chloride transport is closely related with the intraluminal con centration, and it is absorbed from levels lower than plasmatic ones in terminal ileum and proximal jejunum, but the absorption process is stronger in terminal ileum, Simultaneously the bkarbonate ion is excreted until levels higher than the plasmatic ones and the excretion decreases when the intraluminal concentration increases, , this occurs also' in jejunal segment, although the bi.carbonate excretion in this segroent only takes place until concentrations lightly greater than the plasmatic levels. A reciprocal relationship WPS found between the chloride and bicarbonate movements, more obvious in ileum than in jejunum

Impact of simulated in vitro gastrointestinal digestion on bioactive compounds, bioactivity and cytotoxicity of melon (Cucumis melo L. inodorus) peel juice powder

The objectives of this research work were to evaluate the effect of in vitro gastrointestinal digestion (GIT) on melon peel juice (MPJ) powder from fruit processing industry by-products, considering (i) the recovery and accessibility indexes, (ii) the changes on antioxidant activity, and (iii) the prebiotic effect. Throughout exposition to GIT conditions a decrease on the total phenolic content (TPC = 65.31%) and antioxidant activity by ABTS = 39.77% and DPPH = 45.91% were observed. However, these both parameters exhibited stable accessibility, accounting with 81.89%, 76.55%, and 54.07% for TPC, ABTS and DPPH, respectively. After gastrointestinal digestion, the non-absorbed fraction exhibited a positive impact on the growth of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus strains, possibly associated with the high content of simple sugar (glucose and fructose). This fraction also showed to be safe on Caco-2 intestinal cells. These findings suggest that MPJ might be used as a potential food functional ingredient.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Periodontitis and vascular inflammatory biomarkers: an experimental in vivo study in rats

    Get PDF
The objective of this preclinical in vivo study was to determine changes in vascular inflammatory biomarkers in systemic circulation after injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) in rats. Experimental periodontitis was induced by injections of Pg-LPS. Gingival soft and hard tissues changes were analysed by means of magnetic resonance imaging and micro computed tomography. Serum levels of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-10, pentraxin (PTX) 3, and soluble fragment of tumor necrosis factor-like weak inducer of apoptosis (sTWEAK) were determined at baseline and 24 h, 7, 14, and 21 days after periodontal induction. Significant periodontal inflammation and alveolar bone loss were evident at the end of periodontal induction. Experimental periodontitis posed an acute systemic inflammatory response with increased serum levels of IL-6 and PTX3 at 24 h post-induction, followed by a significant overexpression of sTWEAK at 7 days. This inflammatory state was maintained until the end of the experiment (21 days). As expected, IL-10 serum levels were significantly lower during the follow-up compared to baseline concentrations. In the present animal model, experimental periodontitis is associated with increased systemic inflammation. Further studies are needed to confirm whether PTX3 and sTWEAK could be useful biomarkers to investigate potential mechanisms underlying the relationship between periodontitis and atherosclerotic vascular diseases
