Cyclic Triindoles and Tetraindoles: Substituent and Symmetry Effects on their Structural and Electronic Characteristics

    Get PDF
During the last decade heptacyclic 10,15-dihydro-5H-diindolo[3,2-a:3',2'-c]carbazole (triindole) has been extensively studied as a new π-conjugated platform in the construction of self-assembling materials for optoelectronics. Specially remarkably is the record hole mobility values determined on triindole liquid crystals.1 In order to facilitate the design of new materials on a molecular basis and establish clear guidelines to fine tuning electronic parameters, we have recently synthesized new triindole and tetraindole-based systems.2-3 Our joint experimental and theoretical investigation shows that N-substitution, symmetry lowering of the platform, and insertion of π-spacers in extended dimers strongly impact on the fundamental electronic properties of triindoles.2 In addition, saddle-shaped tetraindoles are found to be an interesting 3D rigid scaffold to obtain electroactive molecules with increased dimensionality.3 We hope that this study can not only advance useful structure-property relationships of conjugated indole-based systems but also guide the design of new materials with potential applications in organic electronics.References 1. Unexpected High Brightness Temperature 140 PC from the Core in the Jet of 3C 120

We present 1.7, 5, 15, 22 and 43 GHz polarimetric multi-epoch VLBA observations of the radio galaxy 3C 120. The higher frequency observations reveal a new component, not visible before April 2007, located 80 mas from the core (which corresponds to a deprojected distance of 140 pc), with a brightness temperature about 600 times higher than expected at such distances. This component (hereafter C80) is observed to remain stationary and to undergo small changes in its brightness temperature during more than two years of observations. A helical shocked jet model - and perhaps some flow acceleration - may explain the unusually high Tb of C80, but it seems unlikely that this corresponds to the usual shock that emerges from the core and travels downstream to the location of C80. It appears that some other intrinsic process in the jet, capable of providing a local burst in particle and/or magnetic field energy, may be responsible for the enhanced brightness temperature observed in C80, its sudden appearance in April 2007, and apparent stationarity.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures Accepted to be published in ApJ Letter

    Soils Project

My primary research article discussed the importance of soil damping. The research question is What\u27s the importance of soil damping for tall buildings? (Gómez et al. 1). This is a process that can create stability (Gómez et al.). Soil damping can prevent weakening of structures overtime caused by severe weather conditions. (Gómez et 3). Soil damping is a form of energy dissipation allowing the structure to be more stable when experiencing things like high winds and intense weather conditions (Gómez et al. 5)

Extension of the asymptotic relative efficiency method to select the primary endpoint in a randomized clinical trial

We extend the ARE method proposed in Gómez and Lagakos (2013) devised to decide which primary endpoint to choose when comparing two treatments in a randomized clinical trial. The ARE method is based on the Asymptotic Relative Efficiency (ARE) between two logrank tests to compare two treatments: one is based on a relevant endpoint E1 while the other is based on a composite endpoint E* = E1 ¿ E2, where E2 is an additional endpoint. The ARE depends, besides some intuitive parameters, on the joint law of the times T1 and T2 from randomization to E1 and E2, respectively. Gómez and Lagakos (2013) characterize this joint law by means of Frank’s copula. In our work, several families of copulas can be chosen for the bivariate survival function of (T1, T2) so that different dependence struc- tures between T1 and T2 are feasible. We motivate the problem and show how to apply the method through a real cardiovascular clinical trial. We explore the influence of the copula chosen into the ARE value by means of a simulation study. We conclude that the recommendation on whether or not to use the composite endpoint as the primary endpoint for the investigation is, almost always, independent of the copula chosen.Preprin
