Analysis of ground-based differential imager performance
In the context of extrasolar planet direct detection, we evaluated the
performance of differential imaging with ground-based telescopes. This study
was carried out in the framework of the VLT-Planet Finder project and is
further extended to the case of Extremely Large Telescopes. Our analysis is
providing critical specifications for future instruments mostly in terms of
phase aberrations but also regarding alignments of the instrument optics or
offset pointing on the coronagraph. It is found that Planet Finder projects on
8m class telescopes can be successful at detecting Extrasolar Giant Planets
providing phase aberrations, alignments and pointing are accurately controlled.
The situation is more pessimistic for the detection of terrestrial planets with
Extremely Large Telescopes for which phase aberrations must be lowered at a
very challenging level
Stretched exponential relaxation in a diffusive lattice model
We studied the single dimer dynamics in a lattice diffusive model as a
function of particle density in the high densification regime. The mean square
displacement is found to be subdiffusive both in one and two dimensions. The
spatial dependence of the self part of the van Hove correlation function
displays as function of a single peak and signals a dramatic slow down of
the system for high density. The self intermediate scattering function is
fitted to the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts law. The exponent extracted
from the fits is density independent while the relaxation time follows a
scaling law with an exponent 2.5.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.
Deep GeMS/GSAOI near-infrared observations of N159W in the Large Magellanic Cloud
Aims. The formation and properties of star clusters at the edge of H II
regions are poorly known, partly due to limitations in angular resolution and
sensitivity, which become particularly critical when dealing with extragalactic
clusters. In this paper we study the stellar content and star-formation
processes in the young N159W region in the Large Magellanic Cloud.
Methods. We investigate the star-forming sites in N159W at unprecedented
spatial resolution using JHKs-band images obtained with the GeMS/GSAOI
instrument on the Gemini South telescope. The typical angular resolution of the
images is of 100 mas, with a limiting magnitude in H of 22 mag (90 percent
completeness). Photometry from our images is used to identify candidate young
stellar objects (YSOs) in N159W. We also determine the H-band luminosity
function of the star cluster at the centre of the H II region and use this to
estimate its initial mass function (IMF).
Results. We estimate an age of 2 + or - 1 Myr for the central cluster, with
its IMF described by a power-law with an index of gamma = - 1.05 + or - 0.2 ,
and with a total estimated mass of 1300 solar mass. We also identify 104
candidate YSOs, which are concentrated in clumps and subclusters of stars,
principally at the edges of the H II region. These clusters display signs of
recent and active star-formation such as ultra-compact H II regions, and
molecular outflows. This suggests that the YSOs are typically younger than the
central cluster, pointing to sequential star-formation in N159W, which has
probably been influenced by interactions with the expanding H II bubble
Stationary motion of a self gravitating toroidal incompressible liquid layer
We consider an incompressible fluid contained in a toroidal stratum which is
only subjected to Newtonian self-attraction. Under the assumption of
infinitesimal tickness of the stratum we show the existence of stationary
motions during which the stratum is approximatly a round torus (with radii r, R
and R>>r) that rotates around its axis and at the same time rolls on itself.
Therefore each particle of the stratum describes an helix-like trajectory
around the circumference of radius R that connects the centers of the cross
sections of the torus
Nonthermal hard X-ray excess in the cluster Abell 2256 from two epoch observations
After confirmation of the presence of a nonthermal hard X-ray excess with
respect to the thermal emission in the Coma cluster from two independent
observations, obtained using the Phoswich Detection System onboard BeppoSAX, we
present in this Letter also for Abell 2256 the results of two observations
performed with a time interval of about 2.5 yr. In both spectra a nonthermal
excess is present at a confidence level of ~3.3sigma and ~3.7sigma,
respectively. The combined spectrum obtained by adding up the two spectra
allows to measure an excess at the level of ~4.8sigma in the 20-80 keV energy
range. The nonthermal X-ray flux is in agreement with the published value of
the first observation (Fusco-Femiano et al. 2000) and with that measured by a
Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer observation (Rephaeli & Gruber 2003).Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, 1 table - ApJL, in pres
A microscopic 2D lattice model of dimer granular compaction with friction
We study by Monte Carlo simulation the compaction dynamics of hard dimers in
2D under the action of gravity, subjected to vertical and horizontal shaking,
considering also the case in which a friction force acts for horizontal
displacements of the dimers. These forces are modeled by introducing effective
probabilities for all kinds of moves of the particles. We analyze the dynamics
for different values of the time during which the shaking is applied to
the system and for different intensities of the forces. It turns out that the
density evolution in time follows a stretched exponential behavior if is
not very large, while a power law tail develops for larger values of .
Moreover, in the absence of friction, a critical value exists which
signals the crossover between two different regimes: for the
asymptotic density scales with a power law of , while for
it reaches logarithmically a maximal saturation value. Such behavior smears out
when a finite friction force is present. In this situation the dynamics is
slower and lower asymptotic densities are attained. In particular, for
significant friction forces, the final density decreases linearly with the
friction coefficient. We also compare the frictionless single tap dynamics to
the sequential tapping dynamics, observing in the latter case an inverse
logarithmic behavior of the density evolution, as found in the experiments.Comment: 10 pages, 15 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.
How Abundant is Iron in the Core of the Perseus Cluster?
The analysis of Perseus data collected with the Medium Energy Concentrator
Spectrometer (MECS) on board Beppo-SAX shows that the ratio of the flux of the
8 keV line complex (dominated by Fe K emission) over the 6.8 keV line
complex (dominated by Fe K emission) is significantly larger than
predicted by standard thermal emission codes. Moreover the analysis of
spatially resolved spectra shows that the above ratio decreases with increasing
cluster radius. We find that, amongst the various explanations we consider, the
most likely requires the plasma to be optically thick for resonant scattering
at the energy of the Fe K line. We argue that if this is the case,
then measures of the iron abundance made using standard thermal emission codes,
that assume optically thin emission, can significantly underestimate the true
iron abundance. In the case of the core of Perseus we estimate the true
abundance to be 0.9 solar in a circular region with radius of
kpc and centered on NGC 1275. Finally we speculate that similar results may
hold for the core of other rich clusters.Comment: 19 pages, 3 Postscript figure
Predictors of individual response to placebo or tadalafil 5mg among men with lower urinary tract symptoms secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia: An integrated clinical data mining analysis
Background: A significant percentage of patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) achieve clinically meaningful improvement when receiving placebo or tadalafil 5mg once daily. However, individual patient characteristics associated with treatment response are unknown. Methods: This integrated clinical data mining analysis was designed to identify factors associated with a clinically meaningful response to placebo or tadalafil 5mg once daily in an individual patient with LUTS-BPH. Analyses were performed on pooled data from four randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, clinical studies, including about 1,500 patients, from which 107 baseline characteristics were selected and 8 response criteria. The split set evaluation method (1,000 repeats) was used to estimate prediction accuracy, with the database randomly split into training and test subsets. Logistic Regression (LR), Decision Tree (DT), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF) models were then generated on the training subset and used to predict response in the test subset. Prediction models were generated for placebo and tadalafil 5mg once daily Receiver Operating Curve (ROC) analysis was used to select optimal prediction models lying on the ROC surface. Findings: International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) baseline group (mild/moderate vs. severe) for active treatment and placebo achieved the highest combined sensitivity and specificity of 70% and ∼50%for all analyses, respectively. This was below the sensitivity and specificity threshold of 80% that would enable reliable allocation of an individual patient to either the responder or non-responder group Conclusions: This extensive clinical data mining study in LUTS-BPH did not identify baseline clinical or demographic characteristics that were sufficiently predictive of an individual patient response to placebo or once daily tadalafil 5mg. However, the study reaffirms the efficacy of tadalalfil 5mg once daily in the treatment of LUTS-BPH in the majority of patients and the importance of evaluating individual patient need in selecting the most appropriate treatment. Theory of Room Temperature Ferromagnet V(TCNE)_x (1.5 < x < 2): Role of Hidden Flat Bands
Theoretical studies on the possible origin of room temperature ferromagnetism
(ferromagnetic once crystallized) in the molecular transition metal complex,
V(TCNE)_x (1.5<x<2) have been carried out. For this family, there have been no
definite understanding of crystal structure so far because of sample quality,
though the effective valence of V is known to be close to +2. Proposing a new
crystal structure for the stoichiometric case of x=2, where the valence of each
TCNE molecule is -1 and resistivity shows insulating behavior, exchange
interaction among d-electrons on adjacent V atoms has been estimated based on
the cluster with 3 vanadium atoms and one TCNE molecule. It turns out that
Hund's coupling among d orbitals within the same V atoms and antiferromagnetic
coupling between d oribitals and LUMO of TCNE (bridging V atoms) due to
hybridization result in overall ferromagnetism (to be precise, ferrimagnetism).
This view based on localized electrons is supplemented by the band picture,
which indicates the existence of a flat band expected to lead to ferromagnetism
as well consistent with the localized view. The off-stoichiometric cases (x<2),
which still show ferromagnetism but semiconducting transport properties, have

The purpose of this paper is to enhance a correspondence between the dynamics
of the differential equations on and those
of the parabolic equations on a bounded
domain . We give details on the similarities of these dynamics in the
cases , and and in the corresponding cases ,
and dim() respectively. In addition to
the beauty of such a correspondence, this could serve as a guideline for future
research on the dynamics of parabolic equations
