    Making a home, finding a job: investigating early housing and employment outcomes for young people leaving care

    This paper presents findings from a new study of outcomes for young people leaving care funded by the Department for Education and Skills. It reports findings for a sample of 106 young people in relation to progress made in housing and employment some 12-15 months after leaving care. The generally poor employment outcomes of care leavers are acknowledged, but ingredients that make for success are also highlighted, including the value of settled care and post-care careers, sound career planning and, significantly, the value of delaying young people's transitions from care. Early career paths also interconnect with how young people fare in housing, in developing life skills and with other problems in their lives after leaving care. Housing outcomes were more encouraging and predominantly shaped by events after leaving care, and faring well in housing was the factor most closely associated with positive mental well-being in young people. Some groups that are at risk of faring badly are identified, including young people with mental-health problems, young people with persistent offending or substance misuse problems and, in some respects, young disabled people. The implications of these findings for leaving care services are considered

    Everybody Needs Somebody Sometimes: Validation of Adaptive Recovery in Robotic Space Operations

    This work assesses an adaptive approach to fault recovery in autonomous robotic space operations, which uses indicators of opportunity, such as physiological state measurements and observations of past human assistant performance, to inform future selections. We validated our reinforcement learning approach using data we collected from humans executing simulated mission scenarios. We present a method of structuring humanfactors experiments that permits collection of relevant indicator of opportunity and assigned assistance task performance data, as well as evaluation of our adaptive approach, without requiring large numbers of test subjects. Application of our reinforcement learning algorithm to our experimental data shows that our adaptive assistant selection approach can achieve lower cumulative regret compared to existing non-adaptive baseline approaches when using real human data. Our work has applications beyond space robotics to any application where autonomy failures may occur that require external intervention

    Adsorption of hydrogen on the surface and sub-surface of Cu(111)

    The interaction of atomic hydrogen with the Cu(111) surface was studied by a combined experimental-theoretical approach, using infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy, temperature programmed desorption, and density functional theory (DFT). Adsorption of atomic hydrogen at 160 K is characterized by an anti-absorption mode at 754 cm−1 and a broadband absorption in the IRRA spectra, related to adsorption of hydrogen on three-fold hollow surface sites and sub-surface sites, and the appearance of a sharp vibrational band at 1151 cm−1 at high coverage, which is also associated with hydrogen adsorption on the surface. Annealing the hydrogen covered surface up to 200 K results in the disappearance of this vibrational band. Thermal desorption is characterized by a single feature at ∼295 K, with the leading edge at ~250 K. The disappearance of the sharp Cu-H vibrational band suggests that with increasing temperature the surface hydrogen migrates to sub-surface sites prior to desorption from the surface. The presence of sub-surface hydrogen after annealing to 200 K is further demonstrated by using CO as a surface probe. Changes in the Cu-H vibration intensity are observed when cooling the adsorbed hydrogen at 180 K to 110 K, implying the migration of hydrogen. DFT calculations show that the most stable position for hydrogen adsorption on Cu(111) is on hollow surface sites, but that hydrogen can be trapped in the second sub-surface layer.Fil: Mudiyanselage, Kumudu.     Connecting does not necessarily mean learning: Course handbooks as mediating tools in school-university partnerships

Using data from a yearlong ethnographic study of a postgraduate certificate of education programme in one English university, the function of course handbooks in mediating learning in two high school subject departments (history and modern foreign languages) is analyzed. Informed by Cultural Historical Activity Theory, the analysis focuses on the handbooks as mediating tools in the school-based teacher education activity systems. Qualitative differences in the mediating functions of the handbooks-in-use are examined and this leads to a consideration of the potential of such tools for teacher learning in school–university partnerships. Following Zeichner’s call for rethinking the relationships between schools and universities, the article argues that strong structural connections between different institutional sites do not necessarily enhance student teacher learning

    Constraints on Randall-Sundrum model from top-antitop production at the LHC

    We study the top pair production cross section at the LHC in the context of Randall-Sundrum model including the Kaluza-Klein (KK) excited gravitons. It is shown that the recent measurement of the cross section of this process at the LHC restricts the parameter space in Randall-Sundrum (RS) model considerably. We show that the coupling parameter (kMˉpl\frac{k}{\bar{M}_{pl}}) is excluded by this measurement from 0.03 to 0.22 depending on the mass of first KK excited graviton (m1m_1). We also study the effect of KK excitations on the spin correlation of the top pairs. It is shown that the spin asymmetry in ttˉt\bar{t} events is sensitive to the RS model parameters with a reasonable choice of model parameters.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figure

    The effect of a randomized 12-week soy drink intervention on everyday mood in postmenopausal women

    Objective: Dietary soy may improve menopausal symptoms, and subsequently mediate mood. This novel study examines various doses of dietary soy drink on everyday mood stability and variability in postmenopausal women. Methods: Community-dwelling women (n = 101), within 7 years postmenopause, consumed daily either a low (10 mg, n = 35), medium (35 mg, n = 37), or high (60 mg, n = 29) dose of isoflavones, for 12 weeks. Menopausal symptoms and repeated measures of everyday mood (positive [PA] and negative [NA] affect) (assessed at four time points per day for 4 consecutive days, using The Positive and Negative Affect Schedule) were completed at baseline and follow-up. Results: The dietary soy intervention had no effect on everyday mood stability (for PA [F{2,70} = 0.95, P = 0.390] and NA [F{2,70} = 0.72, P = 0.489]) or variability (for PA [F{2,70} = 0.21, P = 0.807] and for NA [F{2,70} = 0.15, P = 0.864]), or on menopausal symptoms (for vasomotor [F{2,89} = 2.83, P = 0.064], psychological [F{2,88} = 0.63, P = 0.535], somatic [F{2,89} = 0.32, P = 0.729], and total menopausal symptoms [F{2,86} = 0.79, P = 0.458]). There were between-group differences with the medium dose reporting higher PA (low, mean 24.2, SD 6; and medium, mean 29.7, SD 6) and the low dose reporting higher NA (P = 0. 048) (low, mean 11.6, SD 2; and high, mean 10.6, SD 1) in mood scores. Psychological (baseline M = 18 and follow-up M = 16.5) and vasomotor (baseline M = 4.2 and follow-up M = 3.6) scores declined from baseline to follow-up for the overall sample. Conclusions: Soy isoflavones had no effect on mood at any of the doses tested. Future research should focus on the menopause transition from peri to postmenopause as there may be a window of vulnerability, with fluctuating hormones and increased symptoms which may affect mood

    What makes you not a Buddhist? : a preliminary mapping of values

    This study sets out to establish which Buddhist values contrasted with or were shared by adolescents from a non-Buddhist population. A survey of attitude toward a variety of Buddhist values was fielded in a sample of 352 non-Buddhist schoolchildren aged between 13 and 15 in London. Buddhist values where attitudes were least positive concerned the worth of being a monk/nun or meditating, offering candles & incense on the Buddhist shrine, friendship on Sangha Day, avoiding drinking alcohol, seeing the world as empty or impermanent and Nirvana as the ultimate peace. Buddhist values most closely shared by non-Buddhists concerned the Law of Karma, calming the mind, respecting those deserving of respect, subjectivity of happiness, welfare work, looking after parents in old age and compassion to cuddly animals. Further significant differences of attitude toward Buddhism were found in partial correlations with the independent variables of sex, age and religious affiliation. Correlation patterns paralleled those previously described in theistic religions. Findings are applied to spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and for the teaching of religious to pupils of no faith adherence. The study recommends that quantitative psychometrics employed to conceptualize Buddhist values by discriminant validity in this study could be extended usefully to other aspects of the study of Buddhism, particularly in quest of validity in the conceptualization of Buddhist identity within specifically Buddhist populations
