    Star Formation and Chemical Enrichment in Protoclusters

    We examine star formation and chemical enrichment in protoclusters (PCs) using cosmological zoom-in hydrodynamic simulations. We find that the total star formation rate (SFR) in all PC (>1014.4h1>10^{14.4}\,h^{-1}M_\odot) reaches >104Myr1>10^4\,\mathrm{M}_\odot \mathrm{yr}^{-1} at z=3z=3, equivalent to the observed PCs. The SFR in the Core region accounts for about 30%30\% of the total star formation in the PC at z1z\gtrsim1, suggesting the importance of the outer regions to reveal the evolution of galaxy clusters. We find that the total SFR of PC is dominated by galaxies with 1010(M/M)101110^{10}\,\le\,(\mathrm{M}_\star/M_\odot)\,\le\,10^{11}, while more massive galaxies dominate the SFR in the Core. For the chemical abundance evolution, we find that the higher-density region has a higher metallicity and faster evolution. We show that the [O/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] relation turns down in the Core at z=3.4z=3.4 due to the enrichment of Fe by Type Ia supernovae. We find no environmental effects for the mass--metallicity relations (MZR) or log\log(N/O) vs. 12+log12+\log(O/H) for galaxies. We find that the chemical enrichment in galaxy clusters proceeds faster in the high redshift Universe (z>1z>1). Our work will benefit future tomographic observations, particularly using PCs as unique probes of accelerated structure formation and evolution in high-density regions of the universe.Comment: 19 pages, 18 figures, 2 tables, 2 appendices, Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Probing Chemical Enrichment in Extremely Metal-Poor Galaxies and First Galaxies

    The chemical composition of galaxies offers vital insights into their formation and evolution. A key aspect of this study is the correlation between helium abundance (He/H) and metallicity, which is instrumental in estimating the primordial helium generated by Big Bang nucleosynthesis. We study the chemical enrichment history of low-metallicity galaxies, specifically focusing on extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs) and the first galaxies, using the one-zone model and cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. Our one-zone model, using the Limongi & Chieffi (2018) yield, aligns well with observed high He/H ratios at low metallicities and reproduces Fe/O ratios akin to EMPGs. Conversely, the Nomoto et al. (2013) yield does not fully match the high Fe/O ratios seen in EMPGs. Our cosmological hydrodynamic simulations of the first galaxy successfully replicate the stellar mass and star formation rate of galaxies like GN-z11 but fail to produce metallicity and high He/H at low O/H. This is consistent with the results of the one-zone model, which shows that the slope of the He/H-O/H relation is moderate in young, actively star-forming galaxies, suggesting the importance of using galaxies with similar star formation histories for the fit. Bone Marrow Transplantation , (2024); https://doi.org/10.1038/s41409-024-02250-1.In patients undergoing haematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT), the intestinal microbiota plays an important role in prognosis, transplant outcome, and complications such as graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). Our prior research revealed that patients undergoing HSCT substantially differed from healthy controls. In this retrospective study, we showed that administering Clostridium butyricum MIYAIRI 588 (CBM588) as a live biotherapeutic agent is associated with maintaining intestinal microbiota in the early post-HSCT period. Alpha diversity, which reflects species richness, declined considerably in patients who did not receive CBM588, whereas it remained consistent in those who received CBM588. In addition, β-diversity analysis revealed that CBM588 did not alter the gut microbiota structure at 7–21 days post-HSCT. Patients who developed GVHD showed structural changes in their microbiota from the pre-transplant period, which was noticeable on day 14 before developing GVHD. Enterococcus was significantly prevalent in patients with GVHD after HSCT, and the population of Bacteroides was maintained from the pre-HSCT period through to the post-HSCT period. Patients who received CBM588 exhibited a contrasting trend, with lower relative abundances of both genera Enterococcus and Bacteroides. These results suggest that preoperative treatment with CBM588 could potentially be beneficial in maintaining intestinal microbiota balance

    This paper mentions the input current ripple reduction method of the Pulse-link DC-AC Converter for Fuel Cells. The conventional DC-AC converter for fuel cells is interpolated large capacitor between boost converter stage and PWM inverter stage. That capacitor disturbs the size reduction of this unit. To overcome this problem, authors have proposed a novel topology called as Pulse-link DC-AC converter. The proposed topology provides boosted-voltage pulse directly to PWM inverter. This topology does not require large capacitor between two stages. Instead, small values of inductor and capacitor are connected series and inserted between two stages in parallel. This paper examines the relationship between the inductor and capacitor values and input current-ripple.     A Report on Hydrographic Activities Following the Great East Japan Earthquake

    The Great East Japan Earthquake (Mw9.0) on 11 March 2011 accompanied with a huge tsunami of more than 10 meters in height devastated many cities and ports along the Pacific coast of northeastern Japan, and claimed nearly 20,000 lives with many of them still missing. This report reviews actions taken by the Japan Hydrographic and Oceanographic Department (JHOD) after this unprecedented disaster. Immediately after the earthquake, the JHOD carried out hydrographic surveys for the urgent need to help clear the passage in ports due to sunken debris swept away by the tsunami. These surveys have enabled the vessels with relief supplies on board for the affected areas to enter the ports. The JHOD revisited the affected ports for the next stage of hydrographic surveys. These surveys will contribute to revised nautical charts based on new data collected after the earthquake, and includes the ongoing restoration and reconstruction work of quays and port facilities. This stage includes the re-determination of the datum level of the affected ports, which is necessary because of large subsidence being reported in the areas. All of these efforts by the JHOD clearly demonstrate the significance of the hydrographic activities in case of the post-quake emergency situation, not only for the safety of navigation but also for economic recovery

    Cardiologists and diabetologists in Tokushima Prefecture investigated patients with hypertension and diabetes mellitus on treatment in2011. The findings were compared with our year‐2004 data. The study population comprised 236 patients with hypertension and diabetes mellitus being treated by cardiologists(C2011group), and 395 patients with the same condition being treated by diabetologists(D2011group). The mean number of antihypertensives used per patient was1.9for the C2011group and1.6for the D2011group. In these two groups, calcium antagonists were the most frequently used drugs. Renin-angiotensin system(RAS)inhibitors were used in71.5% of the patients in the C2011group and70.0% in the D2011group. The ratio of patients meeting the blood pressure criteria of the Japan Hypertension Society Guidelines was 21.6% for the C2004group,22.9% for the D2004group,29.1% for the C2011group, and18.2% for the D2011group. The mean number of antidiabetics used per patient was1.3for the two groups, glimepiride being most frequently used(38.5% for the C2011group,58.1% for the D2011group), followed by α-glucosidase inhibitors and pioglitazone. Frequency of use of biguanide increased compared with2004. The ratio of patients with HbA1c<6.5% was40.7% for the C2004group, 21.9% for the D2004 group, 46.5% for the C2011 group, and 49.0% for the D2011 group ; a significant improvement was observed in the D2011group compared with the D2004group. The serum cholesterol control rate was49.7% for the C2004group,45.0% for the D2004group,60.9% for the C2011group, and56.5% for the D2011group. The ratio of patients achieving good control for all three parameters(blood pressure, blood glucose level, serum lipid level)was low at7.6% for the C2004group,6.7% for the D2004group,9.4% for the C2011group, and9.0% for the D2011 group. This managerial situation for the condition is unsatisfactory, necessitating efforts for even better control

    Experimental investigation of a control scheme for a zero-detuning resonant sideband extraction interferometer for next-generation gravitational-wave detectors

    Some next-generation gravitational-wave detectors, such as the American Advanced LIGO project and the Japanese LCGT project, plan to use power recycled resonant sideband extraction (RSE) interferometers for their interferometer's optical configuration. A power recycled zero-detuning (PRZD) RSE interferometer, which is the default design for LCGT, has five main length degrees of freedom that need to be controlled in order to operate a gravitational-wave detector. This task is expected to be very challenging because of the complexity of optical configuration. A new control scheme for a PRZD RSE interferometer has been developed and tested with a prototype interferometer. The PRZD RSE interferometer was successfully locked with the control scheme. It is the first experimental demonstration of a PRZD RSE interferometer with suspended test masses. The result serves as an important step for the operation of LCGT.Comment: 6 pages, 9 figrue
