    In this diploma work a discrete cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (DNLS) is used as a model for the evolution of the electric field in a system of coupled waveguides with nonlinear index of refraction.The DNLS is inferred from Maxwell’s equations by expanding the induced charge polarization in a power series, thereby perturbing a single electromagnetic mode. The properties of the model are then derived form a stationary action principle, of particular interest is the construction of a continuity equation and thereby a power flow J between the sites. For systems with periodic boundary conditions there exist so-called vortex solutions with J circulating over the sites. Numerical experiments in the 6-site system are then carried out to investigate the behavior of the current when a vortex solution is perturbed to see whether this could result in a reversed current (vorticity). When a large perturbation was applied to a vortex solution near the limit of linear stability a "vortex breather" solution with a sinusoidally flowing current was found

    Jig Twist Optimization of Mach 0.745 Transonic Truss-Braced Wing Aircraft and High-Fidelity CFD Validation

    This paper presents a jig twist optimization study of Mach 0.745 Transonic Truss-Braced Wing (TTBW) aircraft using an in-house developed aero-structural analysis solver VSPAERO coupled to BEAM3D. A vortex-lattice model of the TTBW model is developed, and a transonic and viscous flow correction method is implemented in the VSPAERO model to account for transonic and viscous flow effects. A correction method for the wing-strut interference aerodynamics is developed and applied to the VSPAERO solver. Also, a structural dynamic finite-element model of the TTBW aircraft is developed. This finite-element model includes the geometric nonlinear effect due to the tension in the struts which causes a deflection-dependent nonlinear stiffness. The VSPAERO model is coupled to the corresponding finite-element model to provide a rapid aero-structural analysis. A flight condition corresponding to Mach 0.745 at 42000 ft is selected for the TTBW aircraft jig twist optimization to reduce the drag coefficient. After the design is implemented, the drag coefficient of the twist optimized TTBW aircraft is reduced about 8 counts. At the end, a high-fidelity CFD solver FUN3D is used to validate the design

    Instead of occupying a marginal space within teacher preparation programs, special education courses and training should promote diversity in servicing marginalized groups such as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) students. Within these programs, issues related to LGBTQ students should occupy a meaningful and formative space in the training of future teachers in special education. Often, special education teachers are at a loss about how to educate LGBTQ students with disabilities. Rethinking the role of special education and LGBTQ students with special needs within teacher education programs enables pre-service teachers to cultivate new values and attitudes that can enrich the student/teacher relationship within public schools. As such, this article proposes to explore best practices for servicing LGTBQ students in special education by promoting better ways to train future teachers

    For generations, Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” has befuddled readers. This project argues that many of its apparent puzzles disappear once we recognize its base text as the Satyricon Liber, Gaius Petronius’ first-century vulgar comedy. Attending to Coleridge’s broader literary corpus alongside images of sexual dysfunction in “The Rime” itself to justify this foundational claim, I then explore how a comic source transforms the reader’s experience of “The Rime” and its criticism. “The Rime” refutes cohesive readings as a horror-poem because it was never intended as pure horror: rather, the poem is Coleridge’s attempt to modernize a classic, low-browed farce

    The Highest Good and Kant's Proof(s) of God's Existence

    This paper explains a way of understanding Kant's proof of God's existence in the Critique of Practical Reason that has hitherto gone unnoticed and argues that this interpretation possesses several advantages over its rivals. By first looking at examples where Kant indicates the role that faith plays in moral life and then reconstructing the proof of the second Critique with this in view, I argue that, for Kant, we must adopt a certain conception of the highest good, and so also must choose to believe in the kind of God that can make it possible, because this is essentially a way of actively striving for virtue. One advantage of this interpretation, I argue, is that it is able to make sense of the strong link Kant draws between morality and religion
