Multiplicity of the Galactic Senior Citizens: A high-resolution search for cool subdwarf companions
Cool subdwarfs are the oldest members of the low mass stellar population.
Mostly present in the galactic halo, subdwarfs are characterized by their low
metallicity. Measuring their binary fraction and comparing it to solar
metallicity stars could give key insights into the star formation process early
in the history of the Milky Way. However, because of their low luminosity and
relative rarity in the solar neighborhood, binarity surveys of cool subdwarfs
have suffered from small sample sizes and incompleteness. Previous surveys have
suggested that the binary fraction of red subdwarfs is much lower than for
their main sequence cousins. Using the highly efficient RoboAO system, we
present the largest yet high-resolution survey of subdwarfs, sensitive to
angular separations, down to 0.15 arcsec, and contrast ratios, up to 6
magnitude difference, invisible in past surveys. Of 344 target cool subdwarfs,
40 are in multiple systems, 16 newly discovered, for a binary fraction of 11.6
percent and 1.8 percent error. We also discovered 6 triple star systems for a
triplet fraction of 1.7 percent and 0.7 percent error. Comparisons to similar
surveys of solar metallicity dwarf stars gives a 3 sigma disparity in
luminosity between companion stars, with subdwarfs displaying a shortage of low

The Minimal Length of a Lagrangian Cobordism between Legendrians
To investigate the rigidity and flexibility of Lagrangian cobordisms between
Legendrian submanifolds, we investigate the minimal length of such a cobordism,
which is a -dimensional measurement of the non-cylindrical portion of the
cobordism. Our primary tool is a set of real-valued capacities for a Legendrian
submanifold, which are derived from a filtered version of Legendrian Contact
Homology. Relationships between capacities of Legendrians at the ends of a
Lagrangian cobordism yield lower bounds on the length of the cobordism. We
apply the capacities to Lagrangian cobordisms realizing vertical dilations
(which may be arbitrarily short) and contractions (whose lengths are bounded
below). We also study the interaction between length and the linking of
multiple cobordisms as well as the lengths of cobordisms derived from
non-trivial loops of Legendrian isotopies.Comment: 33 pages, 9 figures. v2: Minor corrections in response to referee

Physical activity and risk of inflammatory bowel disease: prospective study from the Nurses’ Health Study cohorts
Objective: To examine the association between physical activity and risk of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Design: Prospective cohort study. Setting: Nurses’ Health Study and Nurses’ Health Study II. Participants: 194 711 women enrolled in the Nurses’ Health Study and Nurses’ Health Study II who provided data on physical activity and other risk factors every two to four years since 1984 in the Nurses’ Health Study and 1989 in the Nurses’ Health Study II and followed up through 2010. Main outcome measure Incident ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Results: During 3 421 972 person years of follow-up, we documented 284 cases of Crohn’s disease and 363 cases of ulcerative colitis. The risk of Crohn’s disease was inversely associated with physical activity (P for trend 0.02). Compared with women in the lowest fifth of physical activity, the multivariate adjusted hazard ratio of Crohn’s disease among women in the highest fifth of physical activity was 0.64 (95% confidence interval 0.44 to 0.94). Active women with at least 27 metabolic equivalent task (MET) hours per week of physical activity had a 44% reduction (hazard ratio 0.56, 95% confidence interval 0.37 to 0.84) in risk of developing Crohn’s disease compared with sedentary women with 0.35). Conclusion: In two large prospective cohorts of US women, physical activity was inversely associated with risk of Crohn’s disease but not of ulcerative colitis
Political Expression and Action on Social Media:Exploring the Relationship Between Lower- and Higher-Threshold Political Activities Among Twitter Users in Italy
Scholars and commentators have debated whether lower‐threshold forms of political engagement on social media should be treated as being conducive to higher‐threshold modes of political participation or a diversion from them. Drawing on an original survey of a representative sample of Italians who discussed the 2013 election on Twitter, we demonstrate that the more respondents acquire political information via social media and express themselves politically on these platforms, the more they are likely to contact politicians via e‐mail, campaign for parties and candidates using social media, and attend offline events to which they were invited online. These results suggest that lower‐threshold forms of political engagement on social media do not distract from higher‐threshold activities, but are strongly associated with them
Addendum Guidelines for the Prevention of Peanut Allergy in the United States: Report of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseasesâ Sponsored Expert Panel
BackgroundFood allergy is an important public health problem because it affects children and adults, can be severe and even lifeâ threatening, and may be increasing in prevalence. Beginning in 2008, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, working with other organizations and advocacy groups, led the development of the first clinical guidelines for the diagnosis and management of food allergy. AÂ recent landmark clinical trial and other emerging data suggest that peanut allergy can be prevented through introduction of peanutâ containing foods beginning in infancy.ObjectivesPrompted by these findings, along with 25 professional organizations, federal agencies, and patient advocacy groups, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases facilitated development of addendum guidelines to specifically address the prevention of peanut allergy.ResultsThe addendum provides three separate guidelines for infants at various risk levels for the development of peanut allergy and is intended for use by a wide variety of health care providers. Topics addressed include the definition of risk categories, appropriate use of testing (specific IgE measurement, skin prick tests, and oral food challenges), and the timing and approaches for introduction of peanutâ containing foods in the health care provider’s office or at home. Drivers of Performance
This chapter uses the annual school census to analyze differences in primary school performances across regions. Our results, obtained from a stochastic frontier analysis, suggest that differences in efficiency explain only part of the observed variation, while resource availability is the most important driver of performance differences. In addition to this, we note that resources are distributed quite unevenly among regions and schools. By distributing more school inputs, or distributing existing inputs more equally to the benefit of underserved schools, performance can be expected to go up
A Myo6 Mutation Destroys Coordination between the Myosin Heads, Revealing New Functions of Myosin VI in the Stereocilia of Mammalian Inner Ear Hair Cells
Myosin VI, found in organisms from Caenorhabditis elegans to humans, is essential for auditory and vestibular function in mammals, since genetic mutations lead to hearing impairment and vestibular dysfunction in both humans and mice. Here, we show that a missense mutation in this molecular motor in an ENU-generated mouse model, Tailchaser, disrupts myosin VI function. Structural changes in the Tailchaser hair bundles include mislocalization of the kinocilia and branching of stereocilia. Transfection of GFP-labeled myosin VI into epithelial cells and delivery of endocytic vesicles to the early endosome revealed that the mutant phenotype displays disrupted motor function. The actin-activated ATPase rates measured for the D179Y mutation are decreased, and indicate loss of coordination of the myosin VI heads or ‘gating’ in the dimer form. Proper coordination is required for walking processively along, or anchoring to, actin filaments, and is apparently destroyed by the proximity of the mutation to the nucleotide-binding pocket. This loss of myosin VI function may not allow myosin VI to transport its cargoes appropriately at the base and within the stereocilia, or to anchor the membrane of stereocilia to actin filaments via its cargos, both of which lead to structural changes in the stereocilia of myosin VI–impaired hair cells, and ultimately leading to deafness
