Isotrivial VMRT-structures of complete intersection type
The family of varieties of minimal rational tangents on a quasi-homogeneous
projective manifold is isotrivial. Conversely, are projective manifolds with
isotrivial varieties of minimal rational tangents quasi-homogenous? We will
show that this is not true in general, even when the projective manifold has
Picard number 1. In fact, an isotrivial family of varieties of minimal rational
tangents needs not be locally flat in differential geometric sense. This leads
to the question for which projective variety Z, the Z-isotriviality of
varieties of minimal rational tangents implies local flatness. Our main result
verifies this for many cases of Z among complete intersections.Comment: Some errors in Section 8 and Lemma 8.1 corrected. To appear in The

Dielectric properties of epoxy nanocomposites containing TiO2, Al2O3 and ZnO fillers
The paper presents results of dielectric spectroscopy and space charge (PEA) measurements on epoxy resin filled with 10% w/w micro- and nano- sized particles of TiO2, Al3O2 and ZnO. The results appear to show that the material from which the nano-particle is made is not highly significant in influencing these results. The results support the proposition that the dielectric properties of such nano-filled composites are controlled by Stern-Gouy-Chapman layers (“interaction zones”) around the particles
A Statistical Analysis of the Influence of Deep Convection on Water Vapor Variability in the Tropical Upper Troposphere
The factors that control the influence of deep convective detrainment on water vapor in the tropical upper troposphere are examined using observations from multiple satellites in conjunction with a trajectory model. Deep convection is confirmed to act primarily as a moisture source to the upper troposphere, modulated by the ambient relative humidity (RH). Convective detrainment provides strong moistening at low RH and offsets drying due to subsidence across a wide range of RH. Strong day-to-day moistening and drying takes place most frequently in relatively dry transition zones, where between 0.01% and 0.1% of Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Precipitation Radar observations indicate active convection. Many of these strong moistening events in the tropics can be directly attributed to detrainment from recent tropical convection, while others in the subtropics appear to be related to stratosphere-troposphere exchange. The temporal and spatial limits of the convective source are estimated to be about 36-48 h and 600-1500 km, respectively, consistent with the lifetimes of detrainment cirrus clouds. Larger amounts of detrained ice are associated with enhanced upper tropospheric moistening in both absolute and relative terms. In particular, an increase in ice water content of approximately 400% corresponds to a 10-90% increase in the likelihood of moistening and a 30-50% increase in the magnitude of moistening.NASA Global Energy and Water Cycle programNASA Earth System Science researchTerraACRIMSAT NNG04GK90GGeological Science
Is the Dark Disc contribution to Dark Matter Signals important ?
Recent N-body simulations indicate that a thick disc of dark matter,
co-rotating with the stellar disc, forms in a galactic halo after a merger at a
redshift . The existence of such a dark disc component in the Milky Way
could affect dramatically dark matter signals in direct and indirect detection.
In this letter, we discuss the possible signal enhancement in connection with
the characteristics of the local velocity distributions. We argue that the
enhancement is rather mild, but some subtle effects may arise. In particular,
the annual modulation observed by DAMA becomes less constrained by other direct
detection experiments
