    Electron-cyclotron maser and solar microwave millisecond spike emission

    An intense solar microwave millisecond spike emission (SMMSE) event was observed on May 16, 1981 by Zhao and Jin at Beijing Observatory. The peak flux density of the spikes is high to 5 x 100,000 s.f.u. and the corresponding brightness temperature (BT) reaches approx. 10 to the 15th K. In order to explain the observed properties of SMMSE, it is proposed that a beam of electrons with energy of tens KeV injected from the acceleration region downwards into an emerging magnetic arch forms so-called hollow beam distribution and causes electron-cyclotron maser (ECM) instability. The growth rate of second harmonic X-mode is calculated and its change with time is deduced. It is shown that the saturation time of ECM is t sub s approx. equals 0.42 ms and only at last short stage (delta t less than 0.2 t sub s) the growth rate decreases to zero rather rapidly. So a SMMSE with very high BT will be produced if the ratio of number density of nonthermal electrons to that of background electrons, n sub s/n sub e, is larger than 4 x .00001

    Recently μ opioid receptor (MOR) has been shown to be closely associated with depression. Here we investigated the action of Shuyu, a Chinese herbal prescription, on repeated restraint stress induced depression-like rats, with specific attention to the role of MOR and the related signal cascade. Our results showed that repeated restraint stress caused significant depressive-like behaviors, as evidenced by reduced body weight gain, prolonged duration of immobility in forced swimming test, and decreased number of square-crossings and rearings in open field test. The stress-induced depression-like behaviors were relieved by Shuyu, which was accompanied by decreased expression of MOR in hippocampus. Furthermore, Shuyu upregulated BDNF protein expression, restored the activity of CREB, and stimulated MEK and ERK phosphorylation in hippocampus of stressed rats. More importantly, MOR is involved in the effects of Shuyu on these depression-related signals, as they can be strengthened by MOR antagonist CTAP. Collectively, these data indicated that the antidepressant-like properties of Shuyu are associated with MOR and the corresponding CREB, BDNF, MEK, and ERK signal pathway. Our study supports clinical use of Shuyu as an effective treatment of depression and also suggests that MOR might be a target for treatment of depression and developing novel antidepressants

    Estradiol regulates miR-135b and mismatch repair gene expressions via estrogen receptor-β in colorectal cells.

    Estrogen has anti-colorectal cancer effects which are thought to be mediated by mismatch repair gene (MMR) activity. Estrogen receptor (ER) expression is associated with microRNA (miRNA) expression in ER-positive tumors. However, studies of direct link between estrogen (especially estradiol E2), miRNA expression, and MMR in colorectal cancer (CRC) have not been done. In this study, we first evaluated the effects of estradiol (E2) and its antagonist ICI182,780 on the expression of miRNAs (miR-31, miR-155 and miR-135b) using COLO205, SW480 and MCF-7 cell lines, followed by examining the association of tissue miRNA expression and serum E2 levels using samples collected from 18 colorectal cancer patients. E2 inhibited the expressions of miRNAs in COLO205 cells, which could be reversed by E2 antagonist ICI 182.780. The expression of miR-135b was inversely correlated with serum E2 level and ER-β mRNA expression in CRC patients' cancer tissues. There were significant correlations between serum E2 level and expression of ER-β, miR-135b, and MMR in colon cancer tissue. This study suggests that the effects of estrogen on MMR function may be related to regulating miRNA expression via ER-β, which may be the basis for the anti-cancer effect in colorectal cells

    Proteomic identification of differentially expressed and phosphorylated proteins in epidermis involved in larval-pupal metamorphosis of Helicoverpa armigera

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Metamorphosis is an important process in the life cycle of holometabolous insects and is regulated by insect hormones. During metamorphosis, the epidermis goes through a significant transformation at the biochemical and molecular levels.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>To identify proteins and phosphoproteins involved in this process, we separated and compared epidermal protein profiles between feeding larvae and metamorphically committed larvae using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and Pro-Q Diamond Phosphoprotein Staining. Sixty-one spots showing differential expression and/or phosphorylation were analyzed by mass spectrometry and eighteen proteins were proved related to larval-pupal transformation. Eight of them were further examined at the mRNA level by Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) and two of them were examined at the protein level by Western blot. Calponin was highly expressed in the metamorphic epidermis and phosphorylated by protein kinase C.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our results suggest that the expression and phosphorylation of these proteins may play important roles in coordinating the biochemical processes involved in larval-pupal metamorphosis.</p

    Branching fractions of B−→D−X0,1(2900)B^-\to D^-X_{0,1}(2900) and their implications

    The exotic states X0,1(2900)X_{0,1}(2900) with the quark flavor of csuˉdˉcs\bar{u}\bar{d} are recently observed in the mass spectrum of D+K−D^+K^- in B−→D−D+K−B^-\to D^-D^+K^- by the LHCb collaboration. To explore the nature of X0,1(2900)X_{0,1}(2900), except for analyzing their masses and decay widths as usually did in literatures, the study of their production mechanism in BB-meson weak decays would provide another important information. The amplitude of B−→D−X0,1B^-\to D^- X_{0,1} is non-factorizable. We consider the final-state-interaction effects and calculate them via the rescattering mechanism. The measured branching fractions of B−→D−X0,1B^-\to D^- X_{0,1} are revealed. It is manifested by B−→Λc−Ξc(′)0{B}^-\to \Lambda_c^-\Xi_c^{(\prime)0} and Λb0→Pc+K−\Lambda_b^0\to P_c^+K^- that the rescattering mechanism can result in the relatively large branching fractions. The similar processes of B−→π−X0,1B^-\to \pi^-X_{0,1} are also analyzed. The isospins of X0,1X_{0,1} can be investigated by B→DX0,1±,0B\to DX_{0,1}^{\pm,0} decays.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures.     Clinical efficacy and safety of edaravone therapy in acute cerebral haemorrhage

    Purpose: To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of edaravone in the treatment of acute cerebral haemorrhage (ACH).Methods: This study recruited 120 patients who developed ACH. The patients were divided into control and treatment groups with 60 patients per group. The control group underwent conventional treatment and the treatment group also received intravenous edaravone. The volumes of cerebral edema and cerebral hematoma, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels, and Chinese Stroke Scale (CSS) score before and after treatment were compared between the two groups.Results: The respective cerebral edema volumes of the control and treatment groups decreased from 20.99 ± 12.09 and 21.80 ± 12.01 mL on day 0 to 11.23 ± 6.34 and 12.11 ± 5.98 mL at day 7 and 4.69 ± 4.03 and 4.64 ± 3.9 mL on day 14 (P &lt; 0.05). The respective cerebral hematoma volumes of the control and treatment groups decreased from 18.98 ± 12.04 and 18.97 ± 12.07 mL on day 0 to 12.34 ± 6.57 and 11.89 ± 4.01 mL at day 7 and 9.49 ± 3.95 and 9.52 ± 3.96 mL on day 14. Compared with pretreatment, hs-CRP and IL-6 levels and CSS score of the two groups decreased significantly following treatment (p &lt; 0.05); the differences in the cerebral edema and hematoma volumes of the two groups on days 7 and 14 were not significant (p &gt; 0.05). The hs-CRP and IL-6 levels and CSS scores of the treatment group decreased appreciably (p &lt; 0.05), while the incidence of adverse reactions in the treatment and control groups was 16.67 and 13.33 %, respectively, but the difference was not significant (p &gt; 0.05).Conclusion: Edaravone shows remarkable clinical efficacy and safety with no obvious adverse reactions in the treatment of ACH.     Solar microwave millisecond spike at 2.84 GHz

    Using the high time resolution of 1 ms, the data of solar microwave millisecond spike (MMS) event was recorded more than two hundred times at the frequency of 2.84 GHz at Beijing (Peking) Observatory since May 1981. A preliminary analysis was made. It can be seen from the data that the MMS-events have a variety of the fast activities such as the dispersed and isolated spikes, the clusters of the crowded spikes, the weak spikes superimposed on the noise background, and the phenomena of absorption. The marked differences from that observed with lower time resolution are presented. Using the data, a valuable statistical analysis was made. There are close correlations between MMS-events and hard X-ray bursts, and fast drifting bursts. The MMS events are highly dependent on the type of active regions and the magnetic field configuration. It seems to be crucial to find out the accurate positions on the active region where the MMS-events happen and to make co-operative observations at different bands during the special period when specific active regions appear on the solar disk

    Nine New Cataclysmic Variable Stars with Negative Superhumps

    Negative superhumps (NSHs) are signals a few percent shorter than the orbital period of a binary star and are considered to originate from the reverse precession of the tilted disk. Based on TESS photometry, we find nine new cataclysmic variable stars (CVs) with NSHs. Three (ASAS J1420, TZ Per, and V392 Hya) of these stars similar to AH Her still have NSHs during dwarf nova outbursts, and the NSH amplitude varies with the outburst. The variation in the radius of the accretion disk partially explains this phenomenon. However, it does not explain the rebound of the NSH amplitude after the peak of the outburst and the fact that the NSH amplitude of the quiescence is sometimes not the largest, and it is necessary to combine the disk instability model (DIM) and add other ingredients. Therefore, we suggest that the variation of NSH amplitude with outburst can be an essential basis for studying the origin of NSHs and improving the DIM. The six ( ASASSN-V J1137, ASASSN-V J0611, 2MASS J0715, LAMOST J0925, ASASSN-17qj, and ZTF18acakuxo) remaining stars have been poorly studied, and for the first time we determine their orbital periods, NSHs and Superorbital signal (SOR) periods. The NSH periods and amplitudes of ASASSN-V J1137 and ASASSN-17qj vary with the SOR, and based on the comparison of the observations with the theory, we suggest that a single change in tilted disk angle does not explain the observations of the SOR and that other ingredients need to be considered as well.Comment: 23 pages, 11 figure

    Detection of Tidally Excited Oscillations in Kepler Heartbeat Stars

    Heartbeat stars (HBSs) with tidally excited oscillations (TEOs) are ideal laboratories for studying the effect of equilibrium and dynamical tides. However, studies of TEOs in Kepler HBSs are rare due to {the need for better modeling of the equilibrium tide in light curves}. We revisit the HBSs reported by Li et al. {and study the TEOs in these HBSs based on the derived orbital parameters that could express the equilibrium tide.} We also compile a set of analysis procedures to examine the harmonic and anharmonic TEOs in their Fourier spectrum. The TEOs of 45 HBSs (excluding eight systems studied in previous works) have been determined and presented. 19 of them show prominent TEOs (the signal-to-noise ratio of the harmonics S/N≥10S/N \ge 10). The relation between the orbital eccentricities and the harmonic number of the TEOs shows a positive correlation. The relation between the orbital periods and the harmonic number also shows a positive correlation. Furthermore, the distribution of HBSs with TEOs in the Hertzsprung-Russell (H-R) diagram shows that TEOs are more visible in hot stars with surface temperatures TT ≳\gtrsim 6500 K. These samples may also be valuable targets for future studies of the effect of tidal action in eccentric orbits.Comment: submitted to Ap

    ER-α36, a Novel Variant of ER-α, Mediates Estrogen-Stimulated Proliferation of Endometrial Carcinoma Cells via the PKCδ/ERK Pathway

    Recently, a variant of ER-α, ER-α36 was identified and cloned. ER-α36 lacks intrinsic transcription activity and mainly mediates non-genomic estrogen signaling. The purpose of this study was to investigate the function and the underlying mechanisms of ER-α36 in growth regulation of endometrial Ishikawa cancer cells.The cellular localization of ER-α36 and ER-α66 were determined by immunofluorescence in the Ishikawa cells. Ishikawa endometrial cancer control cells transfected with an empty expression vector, Ishikawa cells with shRNA knockdown of ER-α36 (Ishikawa/RNAiER36) and Ishikawa cells with shRNA knockdown of ER-α66 (Ishikawa/RNAiER66) were treated with E2 and E2-conjugated to bovine serum albumin (E2-BSA, membrane impermeable) in the absence and presence of different kinase inhibitors HBDDE, bisindolylmaleimide, rottlerin, H89 and U0126. The phosphorylation levels of signaling molecules and cyclin D1/cdk4 expression were examined with Western blot analysis and cell growth was monitored with the MTT assay.Immunofluorescence staining of Ishikawa cells demonstrated that ER-α36 was expressed mainly on the plasma membrane and in the cytoplasm, while ER-α66 was predominantly localized in the cell nucleus. Both E2 and E2-BSA rapidly activated PKCδ not PKCα in Ishikawa cells, which could be abrogated by ER-α36 shRNA expression. E2-and E2-BSA-induced ERK phosphorylation required ER-α36 and PKCδ. However, only E2 was able to induce Camp-dependent protein kinase A (PKA) phosphorylation. Furthermore, E2 enhances cyclin D1/cdk4 expression via ER-α36.E2 activates the PKCδ/ERK pathway and enhances cyclin D1/cdk4 expression via the membrane-initiated signaling pathways mediated by ER-α36, suggesting a possible involvement of ER-α36 in E2-dependent growth-promoting effects in endometrial cancer cells
