    A qualitative analysis of sensationalism in media

    Sensationalism is a much discussed and examined topic in journalism. This study examines many aspects of sensationalism from its variety of different definitions to its possible effects on the media audience. It briefly touches upon its history and how it has evolved as a concept in the media.;Sensationalism was examined and quantified through a research methodology that inspected three different media markets. This research is an attempt to explore new areas of sensationalism that will need to be studied. The study shows which markets have more sensational content than others; demonstrating the use of sensationalism among different newspapers with varying circulation numbers throughout the United States

    The effects of sodium tripolyphosphate on preblended pork sausages

    The addition of sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) to pork preblends for maximum sausage stability was investigated during the production of fine-cut batters and coarse-ground pork sausage. Lean pork and fat pork trimmings were preblended with and without STPP and held for 20 hr before final sausage processing. The addition of STPP to the fine-cut sausage, regardless of the method of addition, resulted in minimal improvement of finished product characteristics. However, for coarse-ground sausages, preblending with STPP improved all finished product characteristics. STPP was most effective in stabilizing coarse-ground sausage when it was added to the 80% lean preblend;Coarse-ground pork sausages were made from preblends which were manufactured with our without sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) and held up to 48 hr at 2° or -2°C. A model system was studied first to select test parameters for subsequent sausage production. Sausages made from preblends containing STPP had more desirable product characteristics than those made without STPP. Sausages made from preblends held at -2°C also had more desirable product characteristics that those held at 2°C

    Let D be a directed graph with vertex set V and order n. An anti-directed hamiltonian cycle H in D is a hamiltonian cycle in the graph underlying D such that no pair of consecutive arcs in H form a directed path in D. An anti-directed 2-factor in D is a vertex-disjoint collection of anti-directed cycles in D that span V. It was proved in [3] that if the indegree and the outdegree of each vertex of D is greater than (9/16)n then D contains an anti-directed hamilton cycle. In this paper we prove that given a directed graph D, the problem of determining whether D has an anti-directed 2-factor is NP-complete, and we use a proof technique similar to the one used in [3] to prove that if the indegree and the outdegree of each vertex of D is greater than (24/46)n then D contains an anti-directed 2-factor

    Studying the Lyman-alpha forest allows us to trace the cosmological distribution of matter through time, and may reveal insights into important questions such as the onset of galaxy formation. An equation for determining the number of Lyman-alpha absorption lines per redshift per rest equivalent in the Lyman-alpha forest is given. For a nonevolving population of clouds gamma = 1 for q(sub 0) = 0, and gamma = 0.5 for q(sub 0) = 0.5. A detailed study of the Lyman-alpha forests of Q 1442+101 at z(sub em) = 3.54 and Q 0000-263 at z(sub em) = 4.11

    Magnetic Feshbach resonances between atoms in 2^2S and 3^3P0_0 states: mechanisms and dependence on atomic properties

    Magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances exist in ultracold collisions between atoms in 2 S and 3 P 0 states, such as an alkali-metal atom colliding with Yb or Sr in a clock state. We investigate the mechanisms of these resonances and identify the terms in the collision Hamiltonian responsible for them. They involve indirect coupling between the open and closed channels, via intermediate channels involving atoms in 3 P 1 states. The resonance widths are generally proportional to the square of the magnetic field and are strongly enhanced when the magnitude of the background scattering length is large. For any given pair of atoms, the scattering length can be tuned discretely by choosing different isotopes of the 3 P 0 atom. For each combination of an alkali-metal atom and either Yb or Sr, we consider the prospects of finding an isotopic combination that has both a large background scattering length and resonances at a high but experimentally accessible field. We conclude that 87 Rb + Yb , Cs + Yb , and 85 Rb + Sr are particularly promising combinations

    A search for solar neutrons on a long duration balloon flight

    The EOSCOR 3 detector, designed to measure the flux of solar neutrons, was flown on a long duration RACOON balloon flight from Australia during Jan. through Feb, 1983. The Circum-global flight lasted 22 days. No major solar activity occurred during the flight and thus only an upper limit to the solar flare neutrons flux is given. The atmospheric neutron response is compared with that obtained on earlier flights from Palestine, Texas

    The Origin of \lya Absorption Systems at z>1z>1---Implications from the Hubble Deep Field

    The Hubble Deep Field images have provided us with a unique chance to relate statistical properties of high-redshift galaxies to statistical properties of \lya absorption systems. Combining an {\em empirical} measure of the galaxy surface density versus redshift with an {\em empirical} measure of the gaseous extent of galaxies, we predict the number density of \lya absorption systems that originate in extended gaseous envelopes of galaxies versus redshift. We show that at least 50% and as much as 100% of observed \lya absorption systems of W\apg0.32 \AA can be explained by extended gaseous envelops of galaxies. Therefore, we conclude that known galaxies of known gaseous extent must produce a significant fraction and perhaps all of \lya absorption systems over a large redshift range.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal, April 10, 2000 issu
