The title of this book--Grandparenting: Influences on the Dynamics of Family Relationships edited by Bert Hayslip, Jr and Christine A. Fruhauf—highlights the central theme of this text: That grandparents have historically played indescribably important roles in insuring and preserving family functioning and stability, and continue to do so. Over time, as our world has become more complex, families are often geographically distant and more technologically dependent. The complex and intricate roles of grandparents as influential players in families is more essential than ever before

Eclampsia: a comparative study in a tertiary hospital setting in South-South Region of Nigeria

Background: Eclampsia remains a leading cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality often in settings of poor health seeking behaviour and services. Objective of this study was to determine the incidence, investigate the risk factors, obstetric outcomes and suggest ways of improving the impact of eclampsia. Methods: An analytical observational study on consecutive cases of eclampsia managed in a tertiary hospital setting from 2014 to 2019. For each case of eclampsia recruited the next gestational hypertensive and normotensive cases managed in the period were recruited to serve as controls. Computer statistical software, Chi square for test of associations were used for analysis with statistical significance set at p<0.05.Results: Among 3625 deliveries within the study period were 57 cases of eclampsia; an incidence of 1.57%. Most (74.4%) were antepartum eclampsia. Majority of the eclamptic mothers were unbooked (81.4%), of lower social class (86.0%), poorly educated (81.4%) and nulliparous (58.1%). Eclamptic mothers were more likely to be youth ≤24 years (39.5%), teenagers (25.6%), and unmarried. Twenty-four (55.8%) had abdominal delivery, anaemia (23.3%) and were transfused. Three women died from eclampsia; a case fatality of 6.98%. Twenty-four (55.8%) neonates were preterm, low birth weight (48.8%), intrauterine growth restriction (25.6%), special care baby unit admission (32.6%) and perinatal mortality 13 (30.2%).Conclusions: Eclampsia is still an un-mitigating malady in this study settings with increased maternal and perinatal complications. Nulliparity, low social status, young age and lack of prenatal care appeared significant risk factors. Quality prenatal care, early detection and management of pre-eclampsia will mitigate eclampsia occurrence and severity. Women empowerment is proffered

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of yoga practice in patients with Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN) and to compare its acceptance among patients with chronic diseases other than DPN practicing non-yoga physical activities. Methods: A pre-formed structured questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was conducted with a total of 98 out of 240 patients screened recruited during face to face structured interview, with a diagnosis of DPN. Data on the socio-demographics, age, duration of disease, glycemic controls (hemoglobin A1C [HBA1C] levels), and pain scores, numbness, and physical activity and other comorbid illnesses were collected. Results: A total of 248 pre-diagnosed diabetic patients were screened; 98 study subjects (M: F=66:32) were enrolled with a mean age found to be 55.28 years. As diagnosed clinically and electrophysiologically, the prevalence of peripheral neuropathy was found to be 39.51%. The mean pain score was 3.27. Risk factors for peripheral neuropathy included male sex, advanced age, higher body mass index (%), higher HbA1C (n=67.34%), having a sedentary lifestyle (38.77%), overweight (43, 44.89%), and obesity (21, 21.42%) and <40% belong to the diabetes of duration group of more than 10 years. A total of 16, male: 9 and female: 5 (22.85%) out of 70 subjects were using yoga as physical activity in peripheral neuropathy group and of the control group (non-peripheral neuropathy group), only 8 (25%) out of 25 were doing yoga. The overall proportions were compared using Chi-square, results were non-significant with p=−0.49; Chi-square statistic −0.47. Conclusion: This implies that those with DPN are as likely to accept yoga as a physical activity compared to patients with other chronic illnesses practicing non-yoga physical activities
