Investigation of the magnetic structure and crystal field states of pyrochlore antiferromagnet Nd2Zr2O7
We present synchrotron x-ray diffraction, neutron powder diffraction and
time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the rare earth
pyrochlore oxide Nd2Zr2O7 to study the ordered state magnetic structure and
cystal field states. The structural characterization by high-resolution
synchrotron x-ray diffraction confirms that the pyrochlore structure has no
detectable O vacancies or Nd/Zr site mixing. The neutron diffraction reveals
long range all-in/all-out antiferromagnetic order below T_N ~ 0.4 K with
propagation vector k = (0 0 0) and an ordered moment of 1.26(2) \mu_B/Nd at 0.1
K. The ordered moment is much smaller than the estimated moment of 2.65
\mu_B/Nd for the local Ising ground state of Nd3+ (J=9/2) suggesting that
the ordering is partially suppressed by quantum fluctuations. The strong Ising
anisotropy is further confirmed by the inelastic neutron scattering data which
reveals a well-isolated dipolar-octupolar type Kramers doublet ground state.
The crystal field level scheme and ground state wavefunction have been
determined.Comment: 12 pages, 15 figures, 2 table
Antiferromagnetic ordering and dipolar interactions of YbAlO
In this paper we report low-temperature magnetic properties of the rare-earth
perovskite material YbAlO. Results of elastic and inelastic neutron
scattering experiment, magnetization measurements along with the crystalline
electrical field (CEF) calculations suggest that the ground state of Yb moments
is a strongly anisotropic Kramers doublet, and the moments are confined in the
-plane, pointing at an angle of to the
-axis. With temperature decreasing below K, Yb moments
order into the coplanar, but non-collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure
, where the moments are pointed along their easy-axes. In addition, we
highlight the importance of the dipole-dipole interaction, which selects the
type of magnetic ordering and may be crucial for understanding magnetic
properties of other rare-earth orthorhombic perovskites. Further analysis of
the broad diffuse neutron scattering shows that one-dimensional interaction
along the -axis is dominant, and suggests YbAlO as a new member of one
dimensional quantum magnets.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
Transverse dynamics of water across the melting point: A parallel neutron and x-ray inelastic scattering study
Joint inelastic neutron and x-ray scattering measurements have been performed on heavy water across the melting point. The spectra bear clear evidence of low- and high-frequency inelastic shoulders related to transverse and longitudinal modes, respectively. Upon increasing the momentum transfer, the spectral shape evolves from a viscoelastic regime, where the low-frequency mode is clearly over-damped, toward an elastic one where its propagation becomes instead allowed. The crossover between the two regimes occurs whenever both the characteristic frequency and the linewidth of the low-frequency mode match the inverse of the structural relaxation time. Furthermore, we observe that the frequency of the transverse mode undergoes a discontinuity across the melting, whose extent reduces upon increasing the exchanged momentum
Magnetic ground state of the Ising-like antiferromagnet DyScO
We report the low temperature magnetic properties of the DyScO
perovskite, which were characterized by means of single crystal and powder
neutron scattering, and by magnetization measurements. Below
K, Dy moments form an antiferromagnetic structure
with an easy axis of magnetization lying in the -plane. The magnetic
moments are inclined at an angle of to the -axis. We
show that the ground state Kramers doublet of Dy is made up of primarily
eigenvectors and well separated by crystal field from the
first excited state at meV. This leads to an extreme Ising
single-ion anisotropy, . The transverse magnetic
fluctuations, which are proportional to , are
suppressed and only moment fluctuations along the local Ising direction are
allowed. We also found that the Dy-Dy dipolar interactions along the
crystallographic -axis are 2-4 times larger than in-plane interactions.Comment: 9 pages and 6 figures; to be published in Phys. Rev.
Arc tracking of cables for space applications
The main objective of this study is to develop a new test method that is suitable for the assessment of the resistance of aerospace cables to arc tracking for different specific environmental and network conditions of spacecrafts. This paper reports the purpose, test conditions, test specimen, test procedure, and test acceptance criteria of seven different (200-250 mm long) cables
Molecular and functional profiling identifies therapeutically targetable vulnerabilities in plasmablastic lymphoma
B-cell lymphoma; Cancer geneticsLinfoma de células B; Genética del cáncerLimfoma de cèl·lules B; Genètica del cà ncerPlasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) represents a rare and aggressive lymphoma subtype frequently associated with immunosuppression. Clinically, patients with PBL are characterized by poor outcome. The current understanding of the molecular pathogenesis is limited. A hallmark of PBL represents its plasmacytic differentiation with loss of B-cell markers and, in 60% of cases, its association with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Roughly 50% of PBLs harbor a MYC translocation. Here, we provide a comprehensive integrated genomic analysis using whole exome sequencing (WES) and genome-wide copy number determination in a large cohort of 96 primary PBL samples. We identify alterations activating the RAS-RAF, JAK-STAT, and NOTCH pathways as well as frequent high-level amplifications in MCL1 and IRF4. The functional impact of these alterations is assessed using an unbiased shRNA screen in a PBL model. These analyses identify the IRF4 and JAK-STAT pathways as promising molecular targets to improve outcome of PBL patients.Open Access funding enabled and organized by Projekt DEAL
