The intention of this paper is to serve as a reflexive comment as to my ongoing empirical processes and epistemological position concerning research on university graduates\' aspirations and expectations of graduate employment. This paper will illustrate the inevitable role of social theory in empirical research, and from a Bourdieusian position, consider the use of theory in creating a break with common sense, the danger of replacing common sense with learned bias, and processes that may aid to avoid this problematic issue. Using educational research as a tangible basis, this paper will discuss the empirical application of the habitus in creating a break with common sense, whilst not losing itself to social theory. However, in an effort to depart from simply offering a comment on the need for the application of theory in educational research, this paper intends to demonstrate how the neo-positivist biographical narrative interview method can, contrary to Bourdieu\'s (1987) comments, illuminate the habitus, offering an opportunity for its empirical application in educational research and also for the wider academy.Habitus; Biographical Interview; Epistemological Break; Educational Research; Bourdieu

(Autorenreferat)'Starting with gender specific suicide rates, this essay analyzes popular interpretations of suicide in the 20th century in German-speaking countries. Under the term suicidal tendencies, all thoughts, notices, attempts and committed suicides are summarized. In a first step it will be shown that suicide was for both men and women a topic of autobiographical writing. They used the German term 'Selbstmord' in a neutral way without judging the deed morally. After this the insignificance of religion for populare interpretations of suicide will be demonstrated. The next chapter analyzes the scope of popular explications of suicidal tendencies. Focusing on 'Social relations' popular explanations resembled psychoanalytic ones. That was not the case for pathologizing medico-psychiatric explanations that did not enter everyday life discourse. Instead, these explanations followed a polythetic and polysemic logic that will be analyzed in the third step with a methodologically extended discourse analysis. Finally, gender specific explanations will be presented. Popular interpretations endowed meaning for the surviving to comprehend the suicide as legitimated means to cope with life and crisis management. The essay is based on 155 unpublished, so called popular autobiographies from Germany (without GDR), Austria and Switzerland. They were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively.' (author's abstract

"I want to be an Educational Psychologist": Aspiring Trainee Educational Psychologists’ Perceptions of the Course Application Process

This thesis explored aspiring Trainee Educational Psychologists’ (A-TEPs’) experiences of the Association of Education Psychologists’ (AEP) professional doctorate (ProfDoc) application process. The number of A-TEP applications to the Educational Psychology ProfDoc providers has increased steadily over time, however, the absence of literature about this process suggests there is limited knowledge about A-TEPs’ experiences of applying to become Trainee Educational Psychologists (TEPs). Whilst position papers about the journey of aspiring Clinical Psychologists and empirical evidence from New Zealand suggest the process is stressful, nothing is known about how A-TEPs experience the AEP’s application process. Within this sequential Mixed methods research, 110 participants responded to an online 19-item questionnaire in the quantitative phase. Descriptive and inferential statistics captured information about the sources of support and highlighted aspirants experience the process pleasantly. In the qualitative phase, six informants shared their thoughts, feelings and events which occurred throughout the process via narrative interviews. Narrative analysis was used as a method to explore these stories. Discussion of the findings suggest that although the application process was deemed stressful and negative experience increased as it progressed, the overall application process was experienced positively. With regards to sources of support, interaction with Educational Psychologists (EPs) was most useful and exploration of the AEP and universities’ websites were most common. Novel findings about the social support of family and online communities were found from the data. By contrast, the naïve enquiries of those who did not understand the process and ‘group panic’ found in forums were deemed unhelpful. The researcher suggests further research exploration into the voices of minority groups of A-TEPs’ is important. Possible implications for EPs, course providers and the AEP suggest there are systemic changes these bodies could make to further enhance the pleasant experiences of future A-TEPs

Lewis base catalyzed reactions with latent nucleophiles and phosphonium intermediates

The aim of this thesis was to develop solutions to overcome the common problem related to nucleophile scope in Lewis base catalyzed reactions and develop new synthetic methods and generate new knowledge and deeper understanding of these processes. Relying on the strategies used in previous Lewis base catalyzed allylic substitutions using N-H acidic nucleophiles, we have expanded the scope to allylation of anilines that have been considered insufficiently N-H acidic for applications in such reactions. The concept of latent nucleophiles was the development of enantioselective N-allylation of N-silyl pyrroles, indoles and carbazoles using allylic luorides. They proceed with excellent regioselectivity and expand the scope of Lewis base catalyzed allylic substitutions to otherwise problematic nucleophiles. Further application of the concept of latent nucleophiles in Lewis base catalysis was pursued with C-centered nucleophiles for introduction of difluoromethyl phosphonate moiety. In contrast, the work presented in this thesis on reactions catalyzed by P-centered Lewis bases was focused on the possibility of simultaneous dual activation of small organic molecules with Lewis acids and Lewis bases that do not form stable Lewis adducts and constitute non-traditional frustrated Lewis pairs. The work on the development of 1,2-reduction of ynones and trans-hydroboration of ynoates highlighted the versatile reactivity of vinyl hosphonium salts and inspired further studies involving these types of intermediates. Interest in reactivity of vinyl phosphonium ions informed the interest in reactivity of aryl phosphonium ions. In this area, we have shown that thiazoles and benzothiazoles undergo regioselective C2-H functionalization to form thiazol-2-yltriphenylphosphonium salts which undergo efficient substitution reactions with N-, O-, S and Se-centered nucleophiles to introduce various heteroatom substituents in the C2 position of thiazoles and benzothiazole

Supersymmetry Searches Involving Multiple b-Jets and Missing Energy at the ATLAS Experiment

Supersymmetry is an extension of space-time symmetries that predicts new bosonic parters for the Standard Model (SM) fermions and vice versa. The main subject of this dissertation is the search for these partners in final states involving multiple jets originating from the hadronisation of bottom quarks (b-jets) and missing energy, at the LHC √s = 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector during the Run 2 period (2015 to 2018). Moreover, in light of the Phase-II upgrade of the ATLAS detector, radiation tolerance studies of future silicon microstrip sensors are also presented. In particular, a sensor performance characterisation facility was developed at the University of Sheffield. A description of the facility along with initial benchmark measurements of microstrip sensors, before and after irradiation are presented. The results support the successful commissioning of the facility and are found to be in agreement with what is expected from the literature and similar measurements conducted at other facilities. Regarding the Supersummetry searches, first, a search concerning the pair production of gluinos decaying via third generation squarks into the lightest neutralino is presented. The data used constitute a partial Run 2 dataset collected during 2015 and 2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1/fb. The final state studied comprise of multiple energetic jets, at least three of which must be identified as b-jets, and large missing energy. The dataset is split into samples containing charged leptons or not, to further increase the search sensitivity. No excess above the predicted SM background is found, hence upper limits (at 95% confidence level) have been placed on the models under investigation. For neutralino masses below 300 GeV, gluino masses up to 1.97 (1.92) TeV have been excluded in models involving decays via top (bottom) squarks. An interpretation of the limits as function of the branching ratio of the gluinos into the various third generation squark configurations is provided as well. A search for the pair production of bottom squarks (sbottoms) is also presented. This work use the full LHC Run 2 dataset that amounts to a total of 139/fb. Specifically, the the sbottoms are searched for in scenarios in which they decay to the second-lightest neutralino and a b-quark. Subsequently, each second-lightest neutralino is considered to decay to a Higgs and the lightest neutralino. Two mass configurations are targeted: either the lightest neutralino has a constant mass at 60 GeV or the mass difference between the two neutralino states is constant at 130 GeV. The final state explored consist of zero leptons, at least three b-jets and large missing energy. No significant excess above the predicted SM background is observed in data thus sbottom masses up to 1.5 TeV have been excluded. Finally, few concluding remarks and future prospects are discussed
