A rigidity property of asymptotically simple spacetimes arising from conformally flat data
Given a time symmetric initial data set for the vacuum Einstein field
equations which is conformally flat near infinity, it is shown that the
solutions to the regular finite initial value problem at spatial infinity
extend smoothly through the critical sets where null infinity touches spatial
infinity if and only if the initial data coincides with Schwarzschild data near
infinity.Comment: 37 page
NMR and Chemometric Characterization of Vacuum Residues and Vacuum Gas Oils from Crude Oils of Different Origin
NMR spectroscopy in combination with statistical methods was used to study vacuum residues
and vacuum gas oils from 32 crude oils of different origin. Two chemometric metodes were applied. Firstly,
principal component analysis on complete spectra was used to perform classification of samples and
clear distinction between vacuum residues and vacuum light and heavy gas oils were obtained. To quantitatively
predict the composition of asphaltenes, principal component regression models using areas of resonance
signals spaned by 11 frequency bins of the 1H NMR spectra were build. The first 5 principal components
accounted for more than 94 % of variations in the input data set and coefficient of determination
for correlation between measured and predicted values was R2 = 0.7421. Although this value is not significant,
it shows the underlying linear dependence in the data. Pseudo two-dimensional DOSY NMR experiments
were used to assess the composition and structural properties of asphaltenes in a selected crude oil
and its vacuum residue on the basis of their different hydrodynamic behavior and translational diffusion
coefficients. DOSY spectra showed the presence of several asphaltene aggregates differing
in size and interactions they formed. The obtained results have shown that NMR techniques in combination
with chemometrics are very useful to analyze vacuum residues and vacuum gas oils. Furthermore, we
expect that our ongoing investigation of asphaltenes from crude oils of different origin will elucidate in
more details composition, structure and properties of these complex molecular systems
A pseudospectral matrix method for time-dependent tensor fields on a spherical shell
We construct a pseudospectral method for the solution of time-dependent,
non-linear partial differential equations on a three-dimensional spherical
shell. The problem we address is the treatment of tensor fields on the sphere.
As a test case we consider the evolution of a single black hole in numerical
general relativity. A natural strategy would be the expansion in tensor
spherical harmonics in spherical coordinates. Instead, we consider the simpler
and potentially more efficient possibility of a double Fourier expansion on the
sphere for tensors in Cartesian coordinates. As usual for the double Fourier
method, we employ a filter to address time-step limitations and certain
stability issues. We find that a tensor filter based on spin-weighted spherical
harmonics is successful, while two simplified, non-spin-weighted filters do not
lead to stable evolutions. The derivatives and the filter are implemented by
matrix multiplication for efficiency. A key technical point is the construction
of a matrix multiplication method for the spin-weighted spherical harmonic
filter. As example for the efficient parallelization of the double Fourier,
spin-weighted filter method we discuss an implementation on a GPU, which
achieves a speed-up of up to a factor of 20 compared to a single core CPU
implementation.Comment: 33 pages, 9 figure
Newborns discriminate novel from harmonic sounds: a study using magnetoencephalography
Objective:
We investigated whether newborns respond differently to novel and deviant sounds during quiet sleep.
Methods:
Twelve healthy neonates were presented with a three-stimulus oddball paradigm, consisting of frequent standard (76%), infrequent deviant (12%), and infrequent novel stimuli (12%). The standards and deviants were counterbalanced between the newborns and consisted of 500 and 750 Hz tones with two upper harmonics. The novel stimuli contained animal, human, and mechanical sounds. All stimuli had a duration of 300 ms and the stimulus onset asynchrony was 1 s. Evoked magnetic responses during quiet sleep were recorded and averaged offline.
Results:
Two deflections peaking at 345 and 615 ms after stimulus onset were observed in the evoked responses of most of the newborns. The first deflection was larger to novel and deviant stimuli than to the standard and, furthermore, larger to novel than to deviant stimuli. The second deflection was larger to novel and deviant stimuli than to standards, but did not differ between the novels and deviants.
Conclusions:
The two deflections found in the present study reflect different mechanisms of auditory change detection and discriminative processes.
Significance:
The early brain indicators of novelty detection may be crucial in assessing the normal and abnormal cortical function in newborns. Further, studying evoked magnetic fields to complex auditory stimulation in healthy newborns is needed for studying the newborns at-risk for cognitive or language problems
Involvement of integrin-linked kinase in capillary/tube-like network formation of human vascular endothelial cells
Angiogenesis is a complex process involving an ECM and vascular endothelial cells (EC), and is regulated by various angiogenic factors including VEGF. The ability to form a capillary/tube-like network is a specialized function of EC. Therefore, in vitro angiogenesis was assessed by a capillary/tube-like network formation assay. There are three angiogenic parameters: capillary length, number of capillaries, and relative capillary area per field. We evaluated capillary length per field in the assay. VEGF promoted capillary/tube-like network formation of EC in a type I collagen gel matrix in vitro. Moreover, we demonstrated the involvement of ILK in a VEGF signaling pathway mediating capillary/tube-like network formation of EC using dominant-negative, kinase deficient ILK. This is a straightforward assay to monitor responses of human vascular endothelial cells
Polyhomogeneous expansions from time symmetric initial data
We make use of Friedrich's construction of the cylinder at spatial infinity
to relate the logarithmic terms appearing in asymptotic expansions of
components of the Weyl tensor to the freely specifiable parts of time symmetric
initial data sets for the Einstein field equations. Our analysis is based on
the assumption that a particular type of formal expansions near the cylinder at
spatial infinity corresponds to the leading terms of actual solutions to the
Einstein field equations. In particular, we show that if the Bach tensor of the
initial conformal metric does not vanish at the point at infinity then the most
singular component of the Weyl tensor decays near null infinity as
so that spacetime will not peel. We also
provide necessary conditions on the initial data which should lead to a peeling
spacetime. Finally, we show how to construct global spacetimes which are
candidates for non-peeling polyhomogeneous) asymptotics.Comment: 29 Pages, 2 Figure
Optimization of atmospheric plasma treatment of LDPE films: Influence on adhesive properties and ageing behavior
One of the major disadvantages of low density polyethylene (LDPE) films is their poor adhesive properties. Therefore, LDPE films have been treated with atmospheric pressure air plasma in order to improve their surface properties. So as to simulate the possible conditions in an industrial process, the samples have been treated with two different sample distances (6 and 10 mm), and treatment rates between 100 and 1000 mm s-1. The different sample distances are the distance of the sample from the plasma source. The variation of the surface properties and adhesion characteristics of the films were investigated for different aging times after plasma exposure (up to 21 days) using contact angle measurement, atomic force microscopy, weight loss measurements and shear test. Results show that the treatment increases the polar component () and these changes improve adhesive properties of the material. After the twenty-first day, the ageing process causes a decrease of wettability and adhesive properties of the LDPE films (up to 60%).Fombuena Borrás, V.; García Sanoguera, D.; Sánchez Nacher, L.; Balart Gimeno, RA.; Boronat Vitoria, T.
