Metabelian SL(n,C) representations of knot groups IV: twisted Alexander polynomials
In this paper we will study properties of twisted Alexander polynomials of knots corresponding to metabelian representations. In particular we answer a question of Wada about the twisted Alexander polynomial associated to the tensor product of two representations, and we settle several conjectures of Hirasawa and Murasugi
Standard Errors for EM Estimates in Variance Component Models
A procedure is derived for computing standard errors in random intercept models for estimates obtained from the EM algorithm. We discuss two different approaches: a Gauss-Hermite quadrature for Gaussian random effect models and a nonparametric maximum likelihood estimation for an unspecified random effect distribution. An approximation of the expected Fisher information matrix is proposed which is based on an expansion of the EM estimating equation. This allows for inferential arguments based on EM estimates, as demonstrated by an example and simulations
A kinetics study of the homogeneous and heterogeneous components of the HCl + ClONO_2 reaction
The kinetics of the reaction HCl + ClONO_2 â Cl_2 + HNO_3 were investigated at 298 K using a flow reactor with FTIR analysis to assess the importance of this reaction for stratospheric chemistry. The observed reaction was characteristic of a heterogeneous process; an upper limit of 5 Ă 10^(â18) cmÂł molecule^(â1) s^(â1) was obtained for the homogeneous gas phase rate constant. From calculations of the first order wall rate constant, estimates were made of the reaction rate on stratospheric aerosols. Because both HCl and ClONO_2 need to be adsorbed on the particle surface, the reaction will be of negligible importance under most stratospheric conditions
Topological and functional aspects of the proton conductor, F, of the Escherichia coli ATP-synthase
The isolated H conductor, F , of the Escherichia co1i ATP-synthase consists of three subunits, a, b, and c. H -permeable liposomes can be reconstit~ted with F and lipids; addition of F-ATPase reconstitutes a functional ATP-synthase. Mutants with altered or misslng F subunits are defective in H conduction. Thus, all three subunits are necessary for the expression of H conduction. The subunits a and b contain binding sites for Fâą Computer calculations, cross-links, membrane-permeating photo-reactive labels, and proteases were used to develop tentative structural models for the individual F subunits
Mechanism-based model characterizing bidirectional interaction between PEGylated liposomal CKD-602 (S-CKD602) and monocytes in cancer patients
S-CKD602 is a PEGylated liposomal formulation of CKD-602, a potent topoisomerase I inhibitor. The objective of this study was to characterize the bidirectional pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) interaction between S-CKD602 and monocytes. Plasma concentrations of encapsulated CKD-602 and monocytes counts from 45 patients with solid tumors were collected following intravenous administration of S-CKD602 in the phase I study. The PK-PD models were developed and fit simultaneously to the PK-PD data, using NONMEMŸ. The monocytopenia after administration of S-CKD602 was described by direct toxicity to monocytes in a mechanism-based model, and by direct toxicity to progenitor cells in bone marrow in a myelosuppression-based model. The nonlinear PK disposition of S-CKD602 was described by linear degradation and irreversible binding to monocytes in the mechanism-based model, and Michaelis-Menten kinetics in the myelosuppression-based model. The mechanism-based PK-PD model characterized the nonlinear PK disposition, and the bidirectional PK-PD interaction between S-CKD602 and monocytes. © 2012 Cårdenas et al, publisher and licensee Dove Medical Press Ltd
Role of the E2g phonon in the superconductivity of MgB2: a Raman scattering study
Temperature dependent Raman scattering studies in polycrystalline
MgB2(10<T<300 K)reveal that the E2g phonon does not experience any self energy
renormalization effect across the superconducting critical temperature Tc ~ 40
K. In contrast, most of the current theoretical models rely on the role of the
E2g phonon in the electron-phonon coupling mechanism of superconductivity in
MgB2. According to these models, a hardening of 12% is expected below Tc at the
Gamma point of the Brillouim zone. In the presence of our results, those models
must be reviewed. The analysis of the temperature dependence of the E2g phonon
frequency yields to a isobaric Gruneisen parameter of -1.2< gama(E2g)< 0.2,
smaller than the value of 3.9 obtained from isothermal Raman experiments under
pressure. It is suggested that this apparent disagreement can be explained in
terms of pressure induced changes of the topology of the Fermi surface. Finally
we notice that the phonon linewidth presents the expected two-phonon anharmonic
decay as a function of T and no anomalous temperature dependence of the
linewidth is observed near Tc.Comment: Published in Solid State Comm. 125, 499 (2003
Undifferentiated human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) are highly sensitive to mechanical strain: transcriptionally controlled early osteo-chondrogenic response in vitro
SummaryObjectivePhysical cues play a crucial role in skeletogenesis and osteochondral regeneration. Although human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) offer considerable therapeutic potential, little is known about the molecular mechanisms that control their differentiation. We hypothesized that mechanical strain might be an inherent stimulus for chondrogenic and/or osteogenic differentiation in undifferentiated hMSCs, where c-Fos (FOS) might play a major role in mechanotransduction.MethodhMSCs from 10 donors were intermittently stimulated by cyclic tensile strain (CTS) at 3000 Όstrain for a period of 3 days. Differential gene expression of strained and unstrained hMSCs was analysed by real-time RT-PCR for several marker genes, including the transcription factors FOS, RUNX2, SOX9, and others. Additionally, alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP) was determined kinetically.ResultsThe application of CTS significantly stimulated the expression levels of the early chondrogenic and osteogenic marker genes (SOX9, LUM, DCN; RUNX2, SPARC, SPP1, ALPL); this was accompanied by stimulation of ALP activity (+38%±12 standard error of mean, P<0.05). Matrix analysis revealed that the osteo-chondrogenic response followed a coordinated expression pattern, in which FOS was attributed to early osteogenic but not chondrogenic differentiation.ConclusionUndifferentiated hMSCs are highly sensitive to mechanical strain with a transcriptionally controlled osteo-chondrogenic differentiation response in vitro
Strong Influence of Phonons on the Electron Dynamics of Bi2212
The sudden change of the velocity, so-called "kink," of the dispersing peak
in angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy is a well-known feature in the
high temperature superconducting cuprates. Currently, the origin of the kink is
being much debated, but a consensus has not emerged yet. Here, we present a
study of the momentum evolution of the kink structure from the nodal region
towards the anti-nodal region, for optimally doped Bi2212 sample. We show that
the observed temperature dependence of the kink structure in both regions of
the momentum space is consistent with a scenario in which phonons contribute
strongly to the kink
Towards a 3-D tomographic retrieval for the air-borne limb-imager GLORIA
GLORIA (Gimballed Limb Observer for Radiance Imaging of the Atmosphere) is a new remote sensing instrument essentially combining a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer with a two-dimensional (2-D) detector array in combination with a highly flexible gimbal mount. It will be housed in the belly pod of the German research aircraft HALO (High Altitude and Long Range Research Aircraft). It is unique in its combination of high spatial and state-of-the art spectral resolution. Furthermore, the horizontal view angle with respect to the aircraft flight direction can be varied from 45° to 135°. This allows for tomographic measurements of mesoscale events for a wide variety of atmospheric constituents.

In this paper, a tomographic retrieval scheme is presented, which is able to fully exploit the manifold radiance observations of the GLORIA limb sounder. The algorithm is optimized for massive 3-D retrievals of several hundred thousands of measurements and atmospheric constituents on common hardware. The new scheme is used to explore the capabilities of GLORIA to sound the atmosphere in full 3-D with respect to the choice of the flightpath and to different measurement modes of the instrument using ozone as a test species. It is demonstrated that the achievable resolution should approach 200 m vertically and 20 kmâ30 km horizontally. Finally, a comparison of the 3-D inversion with conventional 1-D inversions using the assumption of a horizontally homogeneous atmosphere is performed
