Considerations for Test Selection: How Do Validity and Reliability Impact Diagnostic
Nine preschool and school-age language assessment tools found to have acceptable levels of identification accuracy were evaluated to determine their overall levels of psychometric validity for use in diagnosing the presence/absence of language impairment. Eleven specific criteria based on those initially devised by McCauley and Swisher (1984) were applied to each of the selected tests in order to determine each testâs overall level of psychometric validity. Results indicated that each of the selected assessment tools met at least eight of the 11 criteria used to evaluate each assessment tool. Five tests met 10 out of 11 criteria. Findings are discussed to assist clinicians in applying psychometric criteria to these selected tests, as well as those not reviewed as part of this current review of standardized assessment tools. A decision tree is included within the discussion of this studyâs findings to aid clinicians in the selection of standardized assessment tools that are most appropriate for clinical use, based on their psychometric characteristics
Open-Source ANSS Quake Monitoring System Software
ANSS stands for the Advanced National Seismic System of the U.S.A., and ANSS Quake Monitoring System (AQMS) is the earthquake management system (EMS) that most of its member regional seismic networks (RSNs) use. AQMS is based on Earthworm, but instead of storing files on disk, it uses a relational database with replication capability to store pick, amplitude, waveform, and event parameters. The replicated database and other features of AQMS make it a fully redundant system. A graphical user interface written in Java, Jiggle, is used to review automatically generated picks and event solutions, relocate events, and recalculate magnitudes. Addâon mechanisms to produce various postearthquake products such as ShakeMaps and focal mechanisms are available as well. It provides a configurable automatic alarming and notification system. The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, one of the Tier 1 ANSS RSNs, has modified AQMS to be compatible with a freely available, capable, openâsource database system, PostgreSQL, and is running this version successfully in production. The AQMS Software Working Group has moved the software from a subversion repository server hosted at the California Institute of Technology to a public repository at gitlab.com. The drawback of AQMS as a whole is that it is complex to fully configure and comprehend. Nevertheless, the fact that it is very capable, documented, and now free to use, might make it an attractive EMS choice for many seismic networks
The Effects of Supplemental Joint Storybook Reading on Preschool Students\u27 Use of Strident Sounds: A Preliminary Investigation
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of adding supplemental, joint storybook reading to existing cycles-based phonological remediation on the speech intelligibility of a group of preschool children with phonological disorders. Method: Sixteen preschool children, ages 3;8 (years; months) to 5;0, with moderate to severe phonological dis-orders served as the participant group for this study. The treatment group received treatment in the form of supple-mental joint storybook reading using books with a high frequency of strident sounds within the text of the story. Independentâsamples t tests were used to study quantitative differences in the control and treatment groups following treatment. Results: Results indicated a significant difference in the presence of stridency observed in participants, with the treatment group showing greater positive change in the presence of stridency in their speech at completion of the study. Conclusion: Results from the study suggest that exposure to focused auditory input in the form of supplementary joint storybook reading, combined with traditional cycles-based phonological remediation, is an effective manner for improving speech intelligibility in children with moderate to severe expressive phonological disorders
Phase transitions and the internal noise structure of nonlinear Schr\"odi nger equation solitons
We predict phase-transitions in the quantum noise characteristics of systems
described by the quantum nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation, showing them to be
related to the solitonic field transition at half the fundamental soliton
amplitude. These phase-transitions are robust with respect to Raman noise and
scattering losses. We also describe the rich internal quantum noise structure
of the solitonic fields in the vicinity of the phase-transition. For optical
coherent quantum solitons, this leads to the prediction that eliminating the
peak side-band noise due to the electronic nonlinearity of silica fiber by
spectral filtering leads to the optimal photon-number noise reduction of a

Case-based Perspective-Taking as a Mechanism to Improve Metacognition and Higher-Level Thinking in Undergraduate Speech-Language Pathology Students
This case study addressed the authorsâ efforts to design an 8-week small-group independent study (IS) experience that facilitated undergraduate speech-language pathology studentsâ (n=19) higher-level thinking and overall metacognitive awareness. We hoped to encourage both in order to improve studentsâ overall cognitive growth while enhancing their reflection about and knowledge of professional perspectives regarding the assessment and treatment of laryngeal cancer. To take on this challenge, we combined case-based learning (CBL) and perspective-taking (PT) pedagogies across the IS. Students completed the Metacognitive Awareness Inventory (MAI) pre- and post-IS, and written reflections after each of eight weekly discussion meetings. The MAI was quantitatively analyzed, while reflections were qualitatively coded using Bloomâs taxonomy. Findings indicated that metacognitive awareness significantly improved and that higher-level cognitive processing was increasingly evidenced across studentsâ IS experience. Results indicate the potential to maximize metacognition and cognitive processing by combining CBL and PT by the methods used here. Applications of combined CBL and PT to other disciplines and teaching and learning situations will be discussed along with the implications of our findings

Through the typology, we advocate for making space to talk about failure and its many forms in SoTL.

Jet Production by Virtual Photons
The production of jets is studied in collisions of virtual photons, gamma*-p
and gamma*-gamma*, specifically for applications at HERA and LEP2. Photon flux
factors are convoluted with matrix elements involving either direct or resolved
photons and, for the latter, with parton distributions of the photon. Special
emphasis is put on the range of uncertainty in the modeling of the resolved

Soliton back-action evading measurement using spectral filtering
We report on a back-action evading (BAE) measurement of the photon number of
fiber optical solitons operating in the quantum regime. We employ a novel
detection scheme based on spectral filtering of colliding optical solitons. The
measurements of the BAE criteria demonstrate significant quantum state
preparation and transfer of the input signal to the signal and probe outputs
exiting the apparatus, displaying the quantum-nondemolition (QND) behavior of
