Nonlinear ptychographic coherent diffractive imaging
Ptychographic Coherent diffractive imaging (PCDI) is a significant advance in imaging allowing the measurement of the full electric field at a sample without use of any imaging optics. So far it has been confined solely to imaging of linear optical responses. In this paper we show that because of the coherence-preserving nature of nonlinear optical interactions, PCDI can be generalised to nonlinear optical imaging. We demonstrate second harmonic generation PCDI, directly revealing phase information about the nonlinear coefficients, and showing the general applicability of PCDI to nonlinear interactions
Renal handling of prednisolone/prednisone: effect of steroid dose and llβ-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase
The purposes of this study were: (1) to determine under steady-state conditions whether the renal clearance of prednisolone is concentration dependent, and (2) to establish whether the urinary excretion of prednisolone and its biologically inactive 11-dehydro metabolite prednisone depend upon the activity of 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11β-OHSD). For that purpose 10 healthy volunteers were infused to steady state over a 13-h period either at a low (11 μg/h × kg) or a high (70 μg/h × kg) rate with prednisolone on two occasions, once without and once with administration of glycyrrhetinic acid, an inhibitor of 11β-OHSD. Prednisolone and prednisone were measured by high-pressure liquid chromatography. Mean renal clearance values of total or unbound prednisolone were several times higher during the high than the low infusion rate. The fractional renal clearance of unbound prednisolone during the high, but not during the low infusion rate exceeded 1. This indicates that in addition to unbound prednisolone, protein-bound prednisolone is excreted in urine at high plasma concentrations. Inhibition of 11β-OHSD increased the urinary ratios of prednisolone/prednisone in all subjects. Conclusions: (1) The renal clearance of prednisolone is concentration dependent; (2) there must be tubular secretion and/or glomerular filtration of prednisolone bound to plasma proteins; (3) the urinary excretion of prednisolone/prednisone is modulated by the activity of 11 β-OHS
Mitofusins and OPA1 Mediate Sequential Steps in Mitochondrial Membrane Fusion
Mitochondrial fusion requires the coordinated fusion of the outer and inner membranes. Three large GTPases—OPA1 and the mitofusins Mfn1 and Mfn2—are essential for the fusion of mammalian mitochondria. OPA1 is mutated in dominant optic atrophy, a neurodegenerative disease of the optic nerve. In yeast, the OPA1 ortholog Mgm1 is required for inner membrane fusion in vitro; nevertheless, yeast lacking Mgm1 show neither outer nor inner membrane fusion in vivo, because of the tight coupling between these two processes. We find that outer membrane fusion can be readily visualized in OPA1-null mouse cells in vivo, but these events do not progress to inner membrane fusion. Similar defects are found in cells lacking prohibitins, which are required for proper OPA1 processing. In contrast, double Mfn-null cells show neither outer nor inner membrane fusion. Mitochondria in OPA1-null cells often contain multiple matrix compartments bounded together by a single outer membrane, consistent with uncoupling of outer versus inner membrane fusion. In addition, unlike mitofusins and yeast Mgm1, OPA1 is not required on adjacent mitochondria to mediate membrane fusion. These results indicate that mammalian mitofusins and OPA1 mediate distinct sequential fusion steps that are readily uncoupled, in contrast to the situation in yeast
Predictions of the causal entropic principle for environmental conditions of the universe
The causal entropic principle has been proposed as a superior alternative to
the anthropic principle for understanding the magnitude of the cosmological
constant. In this approach, the probability to create observers is assumed to
be proportional to the entropy production \Delta S in a maximal causally
connected region -- the causal diamond. We improve on the original treatment by
better quantifying the entropy production due to stars, using an analytic model
for the star formation history which accurately accounts for changes in
cosmological parameters. We calculate the dependence of \Delta S on the density
contrast Q=\delta\rho/\rho, and find that our universe is much closer to the
most probable value of Q than in the usual anthropic approach and that
probabilities are relatively weakly dependent on this amplitude. In addition,
we make first estimates of the dependence of \Delta S on the baryon fraction
and overall matter abundance. Finally, we also explore the possibility that
decays of dark matter, suggested by various observed gamma ray excesses, might
produce a comparable amount of entropy to stars.Comment: RevTeX4, 13pp, 10 figures; v2. clarified introduction, added ref
Improving the Inventory of Large Lunar Basins: Using LOLA Data to Test Previous Candidates and Search for New Ones
Topography and crustal thickness data from LOLA altimetry were used to test the validity of 98 candidate large lunar basins derived from photogeologic and earlier topographic and crustal thickness data, and to search for possible new candidates. We eliminate 23 previous candidates but find good evidence for 20 new candidates. The number of basins greater than 300 km diameter on the Moon is almost certainly a factor 2 (maybe 3?) larger than the number of named features having basin-like topography. Unified Lunar Control Net 2005 data [1] and model crustal thickness data [2] were previously used to search for possible previously unrecognized large lunar impact basins [3,4]. An inventory of 98 candidate topographic basins greater than 300 km in diameter was found [5]. This includes 33 named features (only those having basin-like topography) out of the 45 listed by Wilhelms [6], 38 additional Quasi-Circular Depressions (QCDs) found in the ULCN2005 topography, and 27 Circular Thin Areas (CTAs) found in model crustal thickness data [2]. Most named features and additional QCDs have strong CTA signatures, but there may be a class of CTAs that are not easily recognized in the old and low resolution ULCN2005 topography. Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA) data have recently become publically available. We used these data to (a) refine the center and ring diameters of known basins, (b) test the viability of the candidate basins previously found (as described above), and (c) search for additional candidate basins not revealed by the earlier lower resolution data. We used the LOLA topography directly but also a recent new model crustal thickness data that includes Kaguya gravity data [7]. We repeated a Topographic Expression (TE) and a Crustal Thickness Expression (CTE) scoring exercise originally done with the basins found in ULCN and earlier model crustal thickness data [5]. Each candidate was scored on a scale from 0 (no topographic basin or circular thin area signature) to 5 (strong circular low or strong circular thin area signature). These were combined into a total score used to rank the probability for each candidate basin. We used the same GRIDVIEW software to stretch, contour and profile the LOLA and new crustal thickness data as was done with the ULCN2005 and older model crustal thickness data
Talking about trees: the territorial classification of native forests in the Argentinian Chaco
Deforestation represents an important contributor to climate change. For this reason, identifying
conditions that enable the adoption of policies halting or reversing this process is crucial to avoid
catastrophic climate change. The Argentinian Gran Chaco is a hotspot of deforestation, mainly due
to the expansion of capital-intensive agriculture. In Argentina, the introduction of the national
forest law (NFL) represents an important step to protect the remaining forests. However, in the
Chaco ecoregion, the implementation of the NFL by the different provinces is extremely
heterogeneous. Previous research has provided rich descriptions of the dynamics behind the
implementation of the NFL. Yet this research, mainly based on qualitative approaches, does not
allow for a systematic analysis of the conditions leading to more or less stringent implementations
of the NFL. To address this gap, we first combine the socio-ecological systems framework with
historical materialism to generate a plausible hypothesis for the heterogeneous implementation of
the NFL across the 12 different provinces of the Argentinian Chaco. Specifically, we hypothesise
that it is the differences in contextual factors (i.e. differences in forest cover), material/economic
conditions (i.e. presence and extent of capital-intensive agriculture) and the strength of pro- and
anti-deforestation coalitions, which lead to a heterogeneous territorial classification of native
forests across the various provinces. Subsequently, we test the hypothesis by developing thorough
case studies via qualitative comparative analysis. This approach allows us to study in a more
systematic way the reasons for the observed institutional heterogeneity. The results show that the
proportion of native forests characterised as of low conservation value reflects both the
environmental context (i.e. the extent of native forests) as well as the material/economic conditions
(i.e. the extent of capital-intensive agriculture) and the presence of strong pro-deforestation
cultures, expressed via pro-deforestation coalitions
One- and two-particle microrheology
We study the dynamics of rigid spheres embedded in viscoelastic media and
address two questions of importance to microrheology. First we calculate the
complete response to an external force of a single bead in a homogeneous
elastic network viscously coupled to an incompressible fluid. From this
response function we find the frequency range where the standard assumptions of
microrheology are valid. Second we study fluctuations when embedded spheres
perturb the media around them and show that mutual fluctuations of two
separated spheres provide a more accurate determination of the complex shear
modulus than do the fluctuations of a single sphere.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

Warped Kaluza-Klein Dark Matter
Warped compactifications of type IIB string theory contain natural dark
matter candidates: Kaluza-Klein modes along approximate isometry directions of
long warped throats. These isometries are broken by the full compactification,
including moduli stabilization; we present a thorough survey of Kaluza-Klein
mode decay rates into light supergravity modes and Standard Model particles. We
find that these dark matter candidates typically have lifetimes longer than the
age of the universe. Interestingly, some choices for embedding the Standard
Model in the compactification lead to decay rates large enough to be observed,
so this dark matter sector may provide constraints on the parameter space of
the compactification.Comment: 37pp; v2. references, minor clarificatio
Phase Diagram of Tapered Copolymers Based on Isoprene and Styrene
Although several phase diagrams of block copolymers prepared by sequential monomer addition are known today, the phase diagrams of the corresponding tapered copolymers have not been reported in detail and this despite the industrial importance of the latter. A phase diagram based on a series of tapered diblock copolymers is reported, generated by the sec-butyllithium initiated statistical anionic copolymerization of styrene and isoprene in cyclohexane. This affords copolymers with polyisoprene volume fractions, f, in the range of 0.43 < f < 0.82 and total molar mass in the range of 46–160 kg mol–1. The phase diagram consists of lamellae, hexagonally packed cylinders, weakly ordered hexagonally packed cylinders (CYL), and perforated (PL) as well as irregular bicontinuous morphologies. The phase state in the tapered copolymers bears some similarities and several distinct differences in comparison to the respective copolymers prepared by conventional sequential monomer addition. It is shown that the weakly ordered CYL/PL morphologies comprise a large part of the phase diagram that is significantly extended in comparison to diblock copolymers prepared sequentially. On the other hand, the composition range for the bicontinuous morphologies is similar in the two systems (0.64 < fPI < 0.68)
