Framework for Electroencephalography-based Evaluation of User Experience
Measuring brain activity with electroencephalography (EEG) is mature enough
to assess mental states. Combined with existing methods, such tool can be used
to strengthen the understanding of user experience. We contribute a set of
methods to estimate continuously the user's mental workload, attention and
recognition of interaction errors during different interaction tasks. We
validate these measures on a controlled virtual environment and show how they
can be used to compare different interaction techniques or devices, by
comparing here a keyboard and a touch-based interface. Thanks to such a
framework, EEG becomes a promising method to improve the overall usability of
complex computer systems.Comment: in ACM. CHI '16 - SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing

Optimal flexibility for conformational transitions in macromolecules
Conformational transitions in macromolecular complexes often involve the
reorientation of lever-like structures. Using a simple theoretical model, we
show that the rate of such transitions is drastically enhanced if the lever is
bendable, e.g. at a localized "hinge''. Surprisingly, the transition is fastest
with an intermediate flexibility of the hinge. In this intermediate regime, the
transition rate is also least sensitive to the amount of "cargo'' attached to
the lever arm, which could be exploited by molecular motors. To explain this
effect, we generalize the Kramers-Langer theory for multi-dimensional barrier
crossing to configuration dependent mobility matrices.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Research on The Criminal Liability of Battered Woman’s Homicidal Act
Battered women’s behavior of murdering husband really shocks us , while it lets the public see the battered women’s helpless fighting against the domestic violence for years. We really feel sorry for them. In modern legal system society, the battered women should bear the corresponding criminal liability, though their bitter experience is sympathetic. There are specific characteristics for such ca...学位:法学硕士院系专业:法学院_刑法学学号:1362012115017
Storage technologies for the electricity transition : an analysis of actors, actor perspectives and transition pathways in Germany
This article analyses actors in the storage niche during the German electricity transition. Thus, we develop a more differentiated understanding of actors and their storage activities. For that, we employ the analytical multi-level-perspective (MLP) framework to focus on interactions between old and new storage technologies. Using data from expert interviews, we investigate whether the storage pathway resembles any of the four ideal types of transition pathways for interactions between niche and regime. Through our interviews, we identify five types of actor in the storage market: Big 4 (EnBW, RWE, E.ON, Vattenfall), project developers, innovative municipal utilities, small rural municipal utilities and independent green electricity providers. For each actor, we analyse four main aspects (1) previous orientation and motivation, (2) structural strategies, (3) institutional strategies, and (4) product-related strategies. Parallel to the classification of actors, we also classify available storage technologies according to their primary field of application. We conclude that interactions between regime and niche actors are cooperative, but weak, and no specific actor type currently dominates the niche activities. Hence, applications in the storage niche are not yet ready for a larger market. In sum, our results point to a future system that is characterized by reconfiguration, not substitution or transformation of current market actors.Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF
Self-Reinforcing Electricity Price Dynamics under the Variable Market Premium Scheme
We report a potential self-reinforcing design flaw in the variable market premium scheme that occurs if variable renewable energy power plants receiving a premium become price-setting in the market. A high share of renewable energy is a goal of many countries on their transformation path to a sustainable future. Accordingly, policies like feed-in tariffs have been in place for many years in many countries to support investment. To foster market alignment, variable market premia have been introduced in at least 12 European countries and a further dozen additional countries world-wide. We demonstrate both with a mathematical model and different scenarios of an agent-based simulation that the combination of variable premia and a high share of hours in which renewables are price-setting may lead to a self-reinforcing downward spiral of prices if unchecked. This is caused by the market premium opening up the bidding space towards negative prices. We discuss possible objections and countermeasures and evaluate the severity of this market design flaw
Human cooperation in changing groups in a large-scale public goods game
How people cooperate to provide public goods is an important scientific question and relates to many societal problems. Previous research studied how people cooperate in stable groups in repeated or one-time-only encounters. However, most real-world public good problems occur in groups with a gradually changing composition due to old members leaving and new members arriving. How group changes are related to cooperation in public good provision is not well understood. To address this issue, we analyze a dataset from an online public goods game comprising approximately 1.5 million contribution decisions made by about 135 thousand players in about 11.3 thousand groups with about 234 thousand changes in group composition. We find that changes in group composition negatively relate to cooperation. Our results suggest that this is related to individuals contributing less in the role of newcomers than in the role of incumbents. During the process of moving from newcomer status to incumbent status, individuals cooperate more and more in line with incumbents
Self-reinforcing deflationary price dynamics under the variable market premium scheme
We report a potential self-reinforcing design flaw in the variable market premium scheme that occurs if variable renewable energy (VRE) power plants receiving a premium become price-setting in the market. A high share (>60%) of renewable energies is a goal of many countries on their transformation path to a sustainable future. Accordingly, policies like feed-in tariffs have been in place for many years in many countries to support investment. To further market alignment, variable market premia have been introduced. We demonstrate with an agent-based simulation model (AMIRIS) that the combination of variable premia and a high share of renewables in the market may lead to a downward spiral of prices if unchecked. Given current policy schemes, these results apply to at least 12 European countries and a dozen additional countries world-wide. Hence, we evaluate the severity of this market design flaw and discuss countermeasures
Widespread intron retention in mammals functionally tunes transcriptomes

Of the different classes of AS, intron retention (IR) is the least well understood. In plants and unicellular eukaryotes, IR is the most common form of AS, whereas in animals, it is thought to represent the least prevalent form. Using high-coverage poly(A)(+) RNA-seq data, we observe that IR is surprisingly frequent in mammals, affecting transcripts from as many as three-quarters of multiexonic genes. A highly correlated set of cis features comprising an "IR code" reliably discriminates retained from constitutively spliced introns. We show that IR acts widely to reduce the levels of transcripts that are less or not required for the physiology of the cell or tissue type in which they are detected. This "transcriptome tuning" function of IR acts through both nonsense-mediated mRNA decay and nuclear sequestration and turnover of IR transcripts. We further show that IR is linked to a cross-talk mechanism involving localized stalling of RNA polymerase II (Pol II) and reduced availability of spliceosomal components. Collectively, the results implicate a global checkpoint-type mechanism whereby reduced recruitment of splicing components coupled to Pol II pausing underlies widespread IR-mediated suppression of inappropriately expressed transcripts. This work was supported by grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and Canadian Cancer Society (B.J.B.); EMBO long-term fellowships (U.B. and T.G.-P.); Human Frontier Science Program Organization long-term fellowships (U.B. and M.I.); an OSCI fellowship (T.G.-P.); CIHR postdoctoral and Marie Curie IOF fellowships (N.L.B.-M.); and an NSERC studentship (E.N.).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Lessons learned from synthetic research projects based on the ostrom workshop frameworks
A generalized knowledge of social-ecological relationships is needed to address current environmental challenges. Broadly comparative and synthetic research is a key method for establishing this type of knowledge. To date, however, most work on social-ecological systems has applied idiosyncratic methods to specific systems. Several projects, each based on the frameworks developed by Elinor Ostrom and colleagues, stand out for their application of consistent methods across a broad range of cases. In this paper we compare seven of these projects and draw conclusions regarding their potential benefits and the challenges that scholars can expect in conducting this type of research. The two main challenges that we identified are (1) the collective-action dilemmas that collaborators face in producing and maintaining the social and technical infrastructure that is needed for such projects; and (2) balancing complexity and comparability in the structure of the databases used and the associated methods for characterizing complex social-ecological cases. We discuss approaches for meeting these challenges, and present a guiding checklist of questions for project design and implementation to provide guidance for future broadly comparative research
