All rights reservedRecent evidence has shown that plasma fibrinogen, a major cardiovascular risk factor, interacts with the erythrocyte membrane and acts to influence blood flow via erythrocyte nitric oxide (NO) modulation. In the present pioneer in-vitro study, whole blood samples were harvested from healthy subjects and aliquots were incubated in the absence (control aliquots) and presence of fibrinogen at different degrees of band 3 phosphorylation, and the levels of NO, nitrite, nitrate and S-nitroglutathione (GSNO) were determined. Hyperfibrinogenemia interferes with erythrocyte NO mobilization without changing its efflux in a way that seems to be dependent of the degree of band 3 phosphorylation. In presence of higher fibrinogen concentrations the NO efflux is reinforced when band 3 is phosphorylated (p < 0.001). Higher levels of nitrite, nitrate and GSNO were documented (p < 0.05). However, the mechanisms by which fibrinogen signalling modulates erythrocyte function remain to be clarified and are currently under study. These conditions may be considered an approach to be followed in blood storage for transfusions. This study was supported by grants from the FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (project reference PTDC/SAU-OSM/73449/2006

Inverse type II seesaw mechanism and its signature at the LHC and ILC

The advent of the LHC, and the proposal of building future colliders as the ILC, both programmed to explore new physics at the TeV scale, justifies the recent interest in studying all kind of seesaw mechanisms whose signature lies on such energy scale. The natural candidate for this kind of seesaw mechanism is the inverse one. The conventional inverse seesaw mechanism is implemented in an arrangement involving six new heavy neutrinos in addition to the three standard ones. In this paper we develop the inverse seesaw mechanism based on Higgs triplet model and probe its signature at the LHC and ILC. We argue that the conjoint analysis of the LHC together with the ILC may confirm the mechanism and, perhaps, infer the hierarchy of the neutrino masses.Comment: 24 pages, 22 figure

The ρ\rho parameter at three loops and elliptic integrals

We describe the analytic calculation of the master integrals required to compute the two-mass three-loop corrections to the ρ\rho parameter. In particular, we present the calculation of the master integrals for which the corresponding differential equations do not factorize to first order. The homogeneous solutions to these differential equations are obtained in terms of hypergeometric functions at rational argument. These hypergeometric functions can further be mapped to complete elliptic integrals, and the inhomogeneous solutions are expressed in terms of a new class of integrals of combined iterative non-iterative nature.Comment: 14 pages Latex, 7 figures, to appear in the Proceedings of "Loops and Legs in Quantum Field Theory - LL 2018", 29 April - 4 May 2018, Po

Phase Coherent Precessional Magnetization Reversal in Micro-scopic Spin Valve Elements

We study the precessional switching of the magnetization in microscopic spin valve cells induced by ultra short in-plane hard axis magnetic field pulses. Stable and highly efficient switching is monitored following pulses as short as 140 ps with energies down to 15 pJ. Multiple application of identical pulses reversibly toggles the cell's magnetization be-tween the two easy directions. Variations of pulse duration and amplitude reveal alter-nating regimes of switching and non-switching corresponding to transitions from in-phase to out-of-phase excitations of the magnetic precession by the field pulse. In the low field limit damping becomes predominant and a relaxational reversal is found allowing switching by hard axis fields below the in-plane anisotropy field threshold.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figure

    Serious Games in Cultural Heritage

    Get PDF
Although the widespread use of gaming for leisure purposes has been well documented, the use of games to support cultural heritage purposes, such as historical teaching and learning, or for enhancing museum visits, has been less well considered. The state-of-the-art in serious game technology is identical to that of the state-of-the-art in entertainment games technology. As a result the field of serious heritage games concerns itself with recent advances in computer games, real-time computer graphics, virtual and augmented reality and artificial intelligence. On the other hand, the main strengths of serious gaming applications may be generalised as being in the areas of communication, visual expression of information, collaboration mechanisms, interactivity and entertainment. In this report, we will focus on the state-of-the-art with respect to the theories, methods and technologies used in serious heritage games. We provide an overview of existing literature of relevance to the domain, discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the described methods and point out unsolved problems and challenges. In addition, several case studies illustrating the application of methods and technologies used in cultural heritage are presented

Testing the SUSY-QCD Yukawa coupling in a combined LHC/ILC analysis

In order to establish supersymmetry (SUSY) at future colliders, the identity of gauge couplings and the corresponding Yukawa couplings between gauginos, sfermions and fermions needs to be verified. Here a first phenomenological study for determining the Yukawa coupling of the SUSY-QCD sector is presented, using a method which combines information from LHC and ILC.Comment: 5pp, slightly expanded version of contributions to the Proc. of the Linear Collider Workshop (LCWS 06), Bangalore, India, 9-13 March 2006, and the Proc. of the 14th International Conference on Supersymmetry and the Unification of Fundamental Interactions (SUSY 06), Irvine, California, USA, 12-17 June 200

The Heavy Quark Form Factors at Two Loops

We compute the two-loop QCD corrections to the heavy quark form factors in case of the vector, axial-vector, scalar and pseudo-scalar currents up to second order in the dimensional parameter ϵ=(4D)/2\epsilon = (4-D)/2. These terms are required in the renormalization of the higher order corrections to these form factors.Comment: 131 pages, 3 figure
