Few-layer graphene aqueous suspensions for polyurethane composite coatings
Graphite nanoplates (GnP) have recently attracted attention as an economically viable alternative for the development of functional and structural nanocomposites. The incorporation of GnP into waterborne polyurethane (WPU) with loadings from 0.1 to 10 wt.% was studied. The mechanical properties of the composite films were assessed by tensile testing showing an increase of the Young’s modulus up to 48%. The electrical conductivity increased by 9 orders of magnitude and the water vapor permeability of the composite films decreased 57% for composites containing 5.0 wt.% of GnP.The authors acknowledge FCT, project PEst-C/CTM/LA0025/2015 and PhD grant

Conformational analysis of 2,2-difluoroethylamine hydrochloride: double gauche effect
The gauche effect in fluorinated alkylammonium salts is well known and attributed either to an intramolecular hydrogen bond or to an electrostatic attraction between the positively charged nitrogen and the vicinal electronegative fluorine atom. This work reports the effect of adding a fluorine atom in 2-fluoroethylamine hydrochloride on the conformational isomerism of the resulting 2,2-difluoroethylamine chloride (2). The analysis was carried out using NMR coupling constants in D2O solution, in order to mimic the equilibrium conditions in a physiological medium, in the gas phase and in implicit water through theoretical calculations. Despite the presence of sigma(CH)->sigma(*)(CF) and sigma(CH)->sigma(*)(CN) interactions, which usually rule the hyperconjugative gauche effect in 1,2-disubstituted ethanes, the most important forces leading to the double gauche effect (+NH3 in the gauche relationship with both fluorine atoms) in 2 are the Lewis-type ones. Abiotic modulation of Spartina maritima photobiology in different latitudinal populations
Spartina maritima has a very wide distribution in the northern hemisphere salt marshes crossing a wide
variety of climatic environments. Therefore, it is not strange that some differences arise when observing
the photosynthetic mechanisms of different populations inhabiting different latitudes. During this study
it could be observed that climate is the most important factor controlling the photosynthetic traits of
different populations distributed along a climatic gradient, namely the air temperature, humidity and
light environment. Also some sediment physicochemical parameters such as pH and pore water salinity
showed important influences driving the photosynthetic mechanisms in S. maritima. Furthermore
S. maritima is one of the most abundant halophytes colonizing the Portuguese salt marshes. These facts
have greater importance if one considers the large abundance of this halophytic species and how climate
change will affect their metabolism and thus the ecosystem services provided by this species to the

Long-term follow-up of dorsal wedge osteotomy for pediatric freiberg disease
Background: Treatment for Freiberg disease has been largely conservative despite availability of various operative options for severe or refractory cases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term results of pediatric patients with symptomatic Freiberg disease treated with intra-articular dorsal wedge osteotomy.
Methods: Pediatric patients treated for Freiberg disease with surgery between January 1982 and 1999 were identified and selected for long-term clinical evaluation. Patients were evaluated regarding operative satisfaction and clinical outcome, performed according to the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) lesser toe metatarsophalangeal-interphalangeal scale and range of motion (ROM) of metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint. Patients had radiographic assessment of degenerative joint status with anteroposterior and oblique foot x-ray. Twenty patients (18 female, 2 male; mean age 15.2 years; range 12-17 years) were identified. The mean follow-up period was 23.4 (range 15-32) years.
Results: The clinical outcomes of our patients were classified as excellent in 16 (80%) and good in 4 (20%). The AOFAS mean score was 96.8 (range 91-100) points at the last clinical appointment. A negative correlation between AOFAS score and time of follow-up (r's = -0.61, P < .001) was found. Also, a strong negative correlation was found between Smillie classification and AOFAS final score (r's = -0.88, P < .001).
Conclusion: The patients were very satisfied with pain and quality of life at a mean follow-up time of 23.4 years. To our knowledge, this is the first long-term follow-up report supporting the procedure described by Gauthier and Elbaz as a good option for operative treatment of Freiberg disease.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Object-oriented Programming Laws for Annotated Java Programs
Object-oriented programming laws have been proposed in the context of
languages that are not combined with a behavioral interface specification
language (BISL). The strong dependence between source-code and interface
specifications may cause a number of difficulties when transforming programs.
In this paper we introduce a set of programming laws for object-oriented
languages like Java combined with the Java Modeling Language (JML). The set of
laws deals with object-oriented features taking into account their
specifications. Some laws deal only with features of the specification
language. These laws constitute a set of small transformations for the
development of more elaborate ones like refactorings

In vitro fermentation and prebiotic potential of selected extracts from seaweeds and mushrooms
Extracts with prebiotic activity or bioactive compounds from natural sources such as seaweeds or mushrooms, combining a broad spectrum of biological properties, may offer great potential for their use as functional ingredients enabling intestinal microbiota modulation. In this context, selected enzymatic extracts from Sargassum muticum, Osmundea pinnatifida and Pholiota nameko were evaluated in vitro. Faecal fermentations were conducted anaerobically under controlled temperature and pH over 24 h. Enzymatic extracts of Ph. nameko and of O. pinnatifida at 1% (w/v), lead to increases in Bifidobacterium spp. after 6 h of fermentation in comparison to negative control, suggesting a stimulatory effect. No significant changes over 24 h were observed of Lactobacillus spp. In particular, the Ph. nameko extract obtained with Flavourzyme not only stimulated growth and/or activity of Bifidobacterium spp. but also led to a decrease of Clostridium histolyticum group upon 24 h, thus potentially benefiting colonic health. Higher percentages of this extract (2 and 3%) impaired a C. histolyticum reduction confirming this selective action and prebiotic potential. Differences in short chain fatty acids (SCFA) and lactic acid production between the four extracts may indicate a potential relationship between their physico-chemical properties, which differ in composition and structures, and modulation of gut bacterial species
Advanced electrically conductive adhesives for high complexity PCB assembly
Electronic packaging, or assembly of packed electronic components on printed circuit boards, present challenges that require innovative solder pastes and electrically conductive adhesives to face the increasing complexity of PCB assembly, with denser board occupation and demanding thermal management during assembly. Our aim is to prepare carbon particle based conductive adhesives. The first step to achieve this goal was to prepare composites with epoxy resin and a variety of nano to micron scale carbon particle, produced by mixing on a three roll mill. The percolation threshold for each particle type was determined as well as the conductivity level reached after percolation.This research is sponsored by the Portugal Incentive System for Research and Technological Development. Li+ Influx and Binding, and Li+/Mg2+ Competition in Bovine Chromaffin Cell Suspensions as Studied by 7Li NMR and Fluorescence Spectroscopy
Li+ influx by bovine chromaffin cells, obtained from bovine adrenal medulla, was studied in intact cell suspensions using 7Li NMR spectroscopy with the shift reagent [Tm(HDOTP)]4-. The influx rate constants, ki, were determined in the absence and in the presence of two Na+ membrane transport inhibitors. The values obtained indicate that both voltage sensitive Na+ channels and (Na+/K+)-ATPase play an important role in Li+ uptake by these cells. 7Li NMR T1 and T2 relaxation times for intracellular Li+ in bovine chromaffin cells provided a T1/T2 ratio of 305, showing that Li+ is highly, immobilized due to strong binding to intracellular structures. Using fluorescence spectroscopy and the Mg2+ fluorescent probe, furaptra, the free intracellular Mg2+ concentration in the bovine chromaffin cells incubated with 15 mM LiCl was found to increase by about mM after the intracellular Li+ concentration reached a steady state. Therefore, once inside the cell, Li+ is able to displace Mg2+ from its binding sites
