On the geometrization of matter by exotic smoothness
In this paper we discuss the question how matter may emerge from space. For
that purpose we consider the smoothness structure of spacetime as underlying
structure for a geometrical model of matter. For a large class of compact
4-manifolds, the elliptic surfaces, one is able to apply the knot surgery of
Fintushel and Stern to change the smoothness structure. The influence of this
surgery to the Einstein-Hilbert action is discussed. Using the Weierstrass
representation, we are able to show that the knotted torus used in knot surgery
is represented by a spinor fulfilling the Dirac equation and leading to a
mass-less Dirac term in the Einstein-Hilbert action. For sufficient complicated
links and knots, there are "connecting tubes" (graph manifolds, torus bundles)
which introduce an action term of a gauge field. Both terms are genuinely
geometrical and characterized by the mean curvature of the components. We also

The influence of first generation fertility and economic status on second generation fertility
This paper examines the impact of parental economic status and family size on the actual and expected fertility of adult children using longitudinal data from two generations of families participating in the Panel Study of Income Dynamics. There was a modest positive relationship between first generation family size and second generation fertility. More importantly, the ideal family size of the parental family was more closely related to fertility behavior and plans in the second generation than was actual parental family size. In addition, the data revealed the hypothesized negative correlation between parental financial status and second generation fertility behavior and plans. Recognizing the Visual Focus of Attention for Human Robot Interaction

Berlin, Heidelberg: Springer Berlin Heidelberg; 2012: 99-112.We address the recognition of people’s visual focus of attention (VFOA), the discrete version of gaze that indicates who is looking at whom or what. As a good indicator of addressee-hood (who speaks to whom, and in particular is a person speaking to the robot) and of people’s interest, VFOA is an important cue for supporting dialog modelling in Human-Robot interactions involving multiple persons. In absence of high definition images, we rely on people’s head pose to recognize the VFOA. Rather than assuming a fixed mapping between head pose directions and gaze target directions, we investigate models that perform a dynamic (temporal) mapping implicitly accounting for varying body/shoulder orientations of a person over time, as well as unsupervised adaptation. Evaluated on a public dataset and on data recorded with the humanoid robot Nao, the method exhibit better adaptivity and versatility producing equal or better performance than a state-of-the-art approach, while the proposed unsupervised adaptation does not improve results
