Family Dependence in SU(3)_C X SU(3)_L X U(1)_X models
Using experimental results at the Z-pole and atomic parity violation, we
perform a chi-squared fit at 95% CL to obtain family-dependent bounds to Z_2
mass and Z-Z' mixing angle in the framework of SU(3)_C X SU(3)_L X U(1)_X
models. The allowed regions depend on the assignment of the quark families in
mass eigenstates into the three different families in weak eigenstates that
cancel anomaliesComment: 14 pages, 2 figures, LaTeX2e; added references, added equations with

Analysis of the learning process of proportionality, similarity and the dilation using the Van Hiele model, mathematical visualization and software Geogebra

AnexosMaestríaThe traditional teaching methods of geometry which only focused on content teaching by teachers, is probably one of the causes of the difficulties that the students face in learning geometry concepts. This type of teaching makes students resort to rote learning without reflection, without experimentation and with the preponderance of mathematical formulas. In this respect, mathematics teachers should re-think their teaching methods in order to benefit learning geometry. This research aims to create learning strategies for learning processes development, specially, for geometry concepts analyzing the learning process focused on proportionality, similarity and homothetic in ninth graders of the “Corporación Instituto Decroly” based on the Van Hiele model, the mathematical visualization and Geogebra. It was developed under the qualitative approach with the action research methodology through the phases of diagnostic, action, evaluation and reflection. The strategy implemented was the Teaching Unit which was developed and based on the Van Hiele principles, the mathematical visualization and the use of the Geogebra software. The results reveal the progress during the learning process when the students analyze the learning trajectory. Furthermore, it shows the reaching of level 2 in geometric reasoning when learners use a type of language more sophisticated determining triangles similarities. In conclusion, the characterization of the learning trajectory of students shows a meaningful progress in the development of mathematical thinking processes and the acquisition of proportionality concepts, similarity and homothetic. Additionally, the Geogebra Software permits improve and overcome difficulties in the proportionality, similarity and homothetic learning
Bead, Hoop, and Spring as a Classical Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking Problem
We describe a simple mechanical system that involves Spontaneous Symmetry
Breaking. The system consists of two beads constrained to slide along a hoop
and attached each other through a spring. When the hoop rotates about a fixed
axis, the spring-beads system will change its equilibrium position as a
function of the angular velocity. The system shows two different regions of
symmetry separated by a critical point analogous to a second order transition.
The competitive balance between the rotational diynamics and the interaction of
the spring causes an Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking just as the balance between
temperature and the spin interaction causes a transition in a ferromagnetic
system. In addition, the gravitational potential act as an external force that
causes explicit symmetry breaking and a feature of first-order transition. Near
the transition point, the system exhibits a universal critical behavior where
the changes of the parameter of order is described by the critical exponent
beta =1/2 and the susceptibility by gamma =1. We also found a chaotic behavior
near the critical point. Through a demostrative device we perform some
qualitative observations that describe important features of the system.Comment: 7 pages, 2 tables, 30 figures, LaTeX2

Successful object encoding induces increased directed connectivity in presymptomatic early-onset Alzheimer's disease
Background: Recent studies report increases in neural activity in brain regions critical to episodic memory at preclinical stages of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Although electroencephalography (EEG) is widely used in AD studies, given its non-invasiveness and low cost, there is a need to translate the findings in other neuroimaging methods to EEG.
Objective: To examine how the previous findings using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at preclinical stage in presenilin-1 E280A mutation carriers could be assessed and extended, using EEG and a connectivity approach.
Methods: EEG signals were acquired during resting and encoding in 30 normal cognitive young subjects, from an autosomal dominant early-onset AD kindred from Antioquia, Colombia. Regions of the brain previously reported as hyperactive were used for connectivity analysis.
Results: Mutation carriers exhibited increasing connectivity at analyzed regions. Among them, the right precuneus exhibited the highest changes in connectivity.
Conclusion: Increased connectivity in hyperactive cerebral regions is seen in individuals, genetically-determined to develop AD, at preclinical stage. The use of a connectivity approach and a widely available neuroimaging technique opens the possibility to increase the use of EEG in early detection of preclinical AD.Postprint (author's final draft

Effects of Filter Techniques on the Evaluation of a Model of Real Economic Cycles
dada por la National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER).ABSTRACT: This work uses the Hodrick and Prescott filter (HP), the Band-Pass filter (BP), and a
theoretical decomposition (TD), to show how the cyclical regularities characterized by the model
of exogenous growth of King, Plosser and Rebelo (1988) depend on the filter technique used.
This article exhibits statistically significant differences between properties of the cyclical
components isolated with the HP, BP and TD filters; in particular between the HP and BP filters,
which differs from the results of Canova (1998). It also shows that the TD filter technique is not
consistent with the definition of economic cycle given by the National Bureau of Economic
