Pilot-testing a Cancer 101 Education Curriculum with the Fairbanks Native Association’s Women & Children’s Center for Inner Healing
Cancer is the leading cause of death among Alaska Native people Nevertheless, due to improved detection awareness about cancer prevention, early screening and advances in treatment survival rates are rising
Aeronautical facilities catalogue. Volume 2: Airbreathing propulsion and flight simulators
Volume two of the facilities catalogue deals with Airbreathing Propulsion and Flight Simulation Facilities. Data pertinent to managers and engineers are presented. Each facility is described on a data sheet that shows the facility's technical parameters on a chart and more detailed information in narratives. Facilities judged comparable in testing capability are noted and grouped together. Several comprehensive cross-indexes and charts are included

Perceived religious discrimination as predictor of work engagement, with specific reference to the Rastafari religion
Published ArticleAlthough perceived religious discrimination has been studied in the past, much remains
unknown about the topic. The focus of this study was the Rastafari religion, because this
religious group has up to now been excluded from research studies. A cross-sectional
descriptive study was conducted with a sample of 80 employees belonging to the Rastafari
religion, chosen from organisations in two provinces in South Africa. The findings emanating
from the quantitative research study indicated that, on average, the respondents perceived to
be discriminated against. Furthermore, a positive relationship was established between
perceived religious discrimination and work engagement. These findings advanced the
understanding of perceived religious discrimination, and the impact that it may have on work
engagement, particularly with reference to the Rastafari religion.
Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: The article contributes to the
interdisciplinary discourse regarding perceived religious discrimination, with specific
reference to the Rastafari religion which is a minority religious group in South Africa. Perceived
religious discrimination is discussed and investigated in the context of the workplace, and the
aim was to establish whether perceived religious discrimination influences work-related
attitudes, such as work engagement. Because previous studies have associated perceived
discrimination with less job involvement and career satisfaction, fewer career prospects,
greater work conflict, lower feelings of power, decreased job prestige, and less organisational
citizenship behaviour (Thomas 2008:80), it was expected that perceived religious discrimination
would have a negative influence on work engagement. The findings show that religion
possibly provides individuals with the necessary personal resources to persevere when faced
with religious discrimination, and sustain performance as well as attain success within the
context of the workplace
'Unions are for older people' : a case study of young people in the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (SACCAWU).
Evidence from literature on youth and trade unions suggests mixed perception
of the youth towards trade unions. On one hand, the youth is said to perceive
unions positively, thus see unions as relevant in improving their employment
conditions. On the other hand, the youth is said to have negative perception
towards trade unions. Consequently, it has been argued that there is apathy
among young workers in terms of identification with unions. This study thus
aimed at contributing to this discourse by exploring the attitudes and perceptions
of young people (between the ages of 18 to 35 years) towards trade unionism.
Qualitative technique was used to collect data through in-depth interviews and
Focused Group Discussions with 28 young workers working at where the South
African Commercial Catering and Allied Workers Union (SACCAWU) organises.
The findings of this study indicate that the issue of young workers’ apathy
towards trade unionism is complex. Majority of the participants had positive
perceptions toward the union and saw the union as useful in addressing their
workplace issues. Hence, the generally held view that the youth predominantly
have negative perceptions toward trade unions is exaggerated. This is because
young workers are also mindful of workplace protection and believe that trade
unions can offer them protection. This notwithstanding, the findings also shows
some frustration and apathy among young workers, generated by ignorance of
unionism due to lack of information and unfavourable working hours
Clinopyroxene-liquid thermometers and barometers specific to alkaline differentiated magmas
We present new thermometers and barometers based on clinopyroxene-liquid equilibria specific to alkaline differentiated magmas. The new models were calibrated through the regression analyses of experimental datasets obtained by merging phase equilibria experiments from the literature with new experiments performed by using trachytic and phonolitic starting compositions. The regression strategy was twofold: (1) we have tested previous thermometric and barometric equations and recalibrated these models using the new datasets; (2) we have calibrated a new thermometer and a new barometer including only regression parameters that closely describe the compositional variability of the datasets. The new models yield more precise estimates than previous thermometers and barometers when used to predict temperatures and pressures of alkaline differentiated magmas. We have tested the reliability of the new equations by using clinopyroxene-liquid pairs from trachytes and phonolites erupted during major explosive eruptions at the Phlegrean Fields and Mt. Vesuvius (central Italy). The test yielded crystallization conditions comparable to those determined by means of melt and fluid inclusion analyses and phase equilibria studies; this validates the use of the proposed models for precise estimates of crystallization temperatures and pressures in differentiated alkaline magmas. Because these magmas feed some of the most voluminous, explosive, and threatening volcanic eruptions in the world, a better understanding of the environmental conditions of their reservoirs is mandatory and this is now possible with the new models provided here. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg
Air gasification of digestate and its co-gasification with residual biomass in a pilot scale rotary kiln
In this study energy recovery of digestate from a biogas plant was investigated via air gasification. Gasification tests were executed in a pilot scale rotary kiln plant having a nominal biomass feeding rate of about 20 kg/h. The equivalence ratio was varied from 0.22 to 0.39 with the goal to approach the autothermal condition. Tests were carried out for 5 h in steady state condition. Syngas composition, char and gas yields were measured. To improve the cold gas efficiency of the process, a mixture of digestate and almond shells (60:40 wt%) was gasified. Autothermal condition was reached with the mixture using equivalence ratio of 0.30 where the corresponding cold gas efficiency achieved the maximum value of 55%. The raw gas had a lower heating value of 4–5 MJ/Nm3. To evaluate possible improvements in the produced gas properties, in this work the effect of steam injection was also investigated
