The Psych-politics of Austerity; Democracy, Sovereignty and Civic Protest.

This article argues that new (and sometimes invisible) forms of civic protest are finding a voice in the age of the Internet. It poses the questions whether these voices of protest are (a) part of a long, militant and sometimes violent tradition of street politics based on class struggle or (b) new, peaceful and creative political (and anti-political) platforms (a metaphysical revolt) offering critical and innovative insights into the possibilities of democratic renewal as part of a process of deepening democracy into more ethical and participatory forms

Dealing With Deans and Academic Medical Center Leadership: Advice From Leaders.

    Get PDF
The 2017 Association of Pathology Chairs Annual Meeting included a session for department chairs and other department leaders on how to deal with deans and academic medical center leadership. The session was focused on discussing ways to foster positive relationships with university, medical school, and health system leaders, and productively address issues and opportunities with them. Presentations and a panel discussion were provided by 4 former pathology chairs who subsequently have served as medical deans and in other leadership positions including university provost, medical center CEO, and health system board chair. There was a strong consensus among the participants on how best to deal with superiors about problems, conflicts, and requests for additional resources and authority. The importance of teamwork and accountability in developing a constructive and collaborative relationship with leaders and peers was discussed in detail. Effectiveness in communication, negotiation, and departmental advocacy were highlighted as important skills. As limited resources and increased regulations have become growing problems for universities and health systems, internal stress and competition have increased. In this rapidly changing environment, advice on how chairs can interact most productively with institutional leaders is becoming increasingly important

A study of the effects of stilbestrol on the rate of gain and feed utilization in lambs

Livestock producers and feeders are always Interested in ways and means of increasing rate of gain and feed efficiency in fattening animals. Various chemical compounds have been fed or administered to farm animals with variable results in trying to increase rate of gain and feed efficiency. In the past, some livestock feeders believed that spayed females made mature rapid and efficient gains in the feedlot than unspayed females. On the other hand, others believed that pregnant females made more rapid and more efficient gains than open females. More recently, Hart et al. (1940) concluded that there was no advantage to be gained either from spaying or breeding heifers that are going into the feed lot. Recent studies have demonstrated, under certain conditions, that subcutaneously administered synthetic female-like sex hormones may increase the growth rate and feed efficiency over that of similar untreated farm animals. The mechanism of this action has not been satisfactorily elucidated. Diethylstilbestrol, more commonly referred to as stilbestrol, has shown the most promising results of any of the hormonal compounds used in attempting to increase meat production more economically. This compound, a synthetic female-like sex hormone, has an advantage over all other compounds thus far studied in that only a single treatment at the beginning of the trial is required. This synthetic hormone is relatively inexpensive compared to the price of the natural female hormones. For example, the natural hormone, estradiol benzoate, costs approximately fifty-eight times as much as a similar quantity of stilbestrol. Stilbestrol and other synthetic hormones may become widely used on market animals unless the residual effects of the materials used prove to be deleterious. The author would like to point out that two=thirds of the work reported in this thesis was completed during the spring and summer of 1950. At that time only one report had been published in which stilbestrol had been used in connection with the rate of gain and feed efficiency of sheep

    UCC Civic Engagement Plan 2017-2022.

    Get PDF
This civic engagement plan was drafted by the University Civic and Community Engagement Committee, following extensive consultations with staff, students and community stakeholders. It is grounded in a benchmarking exercise, a review of international literature and best practices, and is informed by a self assessment of UCC’s engagement activity in 2016, which was supported by the Carnegie Foundation. A staff survey conducted in 2016 found that there was reasonable staff activity in the area of community engagement. However, staff cited barriers such as having insufficient time, a lack of recognition or valuing of engagement, and engagement needing to be integral to the mission of the University. They further referred to a fragmented organisational approach and needing better communication and information centrally. Recently Milward-Brown surveyed a representative sample of 400 people across the Munster region on behalf of UCC. The results showed that public understanding of the societal engagement mission of the University is low compared to other factors; underscoring the importance of more intently demonstrating and communicating the value of our engagement work to the public

Stakeholder network as a determinant to the degree of synchronization between a firm’s values and its stakeholder management strategies. A comparison between public and private companies using mission statements and corporate charitable donations.

Stakeholder theory and stakeholder management theories have gained popularity among practitioners and scholars in recent decades for both its normative and positive power. Intuitively, it is easy to assume that firms who manage for stakeholders utilize various stakeholder management strategies to realize their corporate values. Thus, this study intends to examine the degree of synchronization, or the lack thereof, between a firm’s publicly endorsed values and the values embedded in its CSR stakeholder management activity, specifically, charitable donations. More importantly, due to the different sizes and nature of the stakeholder networks faced by private and public firms, we expect the levels of synchronization to differ between the two, with the distinction that such values stray further from each other for public firms. We found that public and private firms differ in the levels of synchronization between their endorsed values and their charitable recipient organizations’ values on many semantic and psychological domains (17 categories). Interesting, contrary to our initial hypothesis, the level of discrepancy is greater among private firms than that of public firms on most domains (16 categories), which entices further research into determinants of firms’ behavior affected by institutionalized rituals
