Recycled steel fiber reinforced concrete for structural elements subjected to chloride attack: mechanical and durability performance
betão fendilhado previamente exposto a ambiente corrosivo.
as leis constitutivas pós-fendilhação do BRFAR.
Recycled Steel Fibers (RSF) derived from the tire recycling industry have been successfully used in
concrete to improve its post-cracking load bearing capacity and energy absorption performance. For
structural elements exposed to chloride environments, an important aspect of Recycled Steel Fiber
Reinforced Concrete (RSFRC) durability is the corrosion resistance. However, research on the durability
of RSFRC is almost inexistent, namely concerning the effects of chloride attack, which may limit the
mobilization of the full potential of RSFRC.
The present thesis aims to assess the mechanical behavior and durability performance of RSFRC under
chloride attack involving both experimental and analytical/numerical research, which knowledge may
contribute for future design guidelines and design tools for RSFRC structures. The research activities
carried out covered two main fields, the technology of RSFRC manufacturing and the investigation on the
corrosion susceptibility of RSFRC.
In the first field, an experimental program was carried out to characterize the RSF in terms of geometry,
chemical composition, mechanical properties and microstructure. The influence of rubber particles
attached to RSF surface was assessed in the performance of RSF as concrete reinforcement and in its
corrosion resistance. A sustainable mix composition of RSFRC was attained and their mechanical
properties were evaluated by three-point notched beam bending tests and compressive tests.
The second research field involved an experimental program to characterize the RSF corrosion and to
investigate the corrosion effects of RSF on the fiber reinforcement mechanisms developed during the fiber
pull-out from cracked concrete previously exposed to corrosive environment. Additionally, the postcracking
behavior of RSFRC under chloride attack was characterized from double edge wedge splitting
tests and round panel tests. In these tests, the influence of the crack width, chloride exposure period and
fiber distribution/orientation profile was considered. The experimental results were used to perform
numerical simulations by inverse analysis, aiming to derive the post-cracking constitutive laws of RSFRC.
A simplified prediction of the critical chloride content corresponding to the beginning of fiber corrosion
and of the long-term performance of a RSFRC structural element exposed to a specific dry-wet aggressive
maritime environment was performed.
In addition, the technical, environmental and economic benefits of using the developed RSFRC for
application to structural elements were assessed at material level and compared to Industrial Steel Fiber
Reinforced Concrete

Influence of the chloride attack on the post-cracking behavior of Recycled Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete
The main purpose of the present work is to study the mechanical behavior and durability performance of recycled steel fiber reinforced concrete (RSFRC) under a chloride environment. To this end, the effect of chloride attack on the load-carrying capacity of pre-cracked RSFRC round panels is investigated by performing round panel tests supported on three points (RPT-3ps), considering the influence of the crack width and the fiber distribution/orientation profile. In addition, the influence of the adopted chloride exposure conditions on the post-cracking constitutive laws of the developed RSFRC is also assessed by performing numerical simulations for the prediction of the long-term performance of RSFRC under these aggressive conditions. The tensile stress–crack width relationship of RSFRC is derived by performing an inverse analysis with the RPT-3ps results. The obtained experimental and numerical results show a negligible effect of the chloride attack on the post-cracking behavior of RSFRC for the chloride exposure conditions and pre-crack width levels adopted in this study. This research was funded by C.F. research grant PD/BD/113638/2015 provided by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) through the Doctoral Program in Eco Construction and Rehabilitation–EcoCoRe, and J.B. through the project ICoSyTec (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-027990) financed by FCT and co-funded by FEDER through Operational Competitiveness and Internationalization Programme (POCI)

Durability of steel fiber reinforced self-compacting concrete
Publicado em "Proceedings of the
5th International Conference on
The Concrete Future", ISBN 978-981-07-6067-0For conventional concrete without steel fibers, although still an aspect under discussion, there are some commonly used durability indicators. However, for steel fiber reinforced self-compacting concrete (SFRSCC) literature is sparse and the aspects of durability, particularly corrosion resistance, still deserve deeper research, mainly the corrosion of the fibers, since its influence on the appearance and on the serviceability limit states of a SFRSCC structure can be a concern. Therefore, in the ambit of an ongoing research project dealing with the development of SFRSCC sandwich panels, durability tests were executed to compare the performance of SFRSCC and self-compacting concrete (SCC) specimens. Nine different tests were performed, applied to SFRSCC and SCC in order to characterize their mechanical properties (elasticity modulus, compressive strength and flexural behaviour) and to evaluate its durability indicators normally used for plain concrete, namely: water absorption by immersion and by capillarity, permeability to air, electrical resistivity, chloride diffusion by migration under nonsteady state and carbonation. The results for the different concretes and curing times up to 28 days are presented and analyzed.(undefined
Durability of steel fiber reinforced self-compacting concrete
Durability is one of the most important aspects of concrete due to its fundamental incidence on the serviceability working conditions of concrete structures. Research on the durability of steel fiber reinforced self-compacting concrete (SFRSCC) is still scarce, particularly in the aspects of corrosion resistance, which did not yet demonstrate clearly whether the corrosion of steel fibers may or may not lead to cracking and subsequent spalling of the surrounding concrete.
For conventional concrete, without steel fibers, there are some widespread used durability indicators, which applicability to SFRSCC and its common values are practically unknown. For this purpose, an experimental work with SFRSCC and self-compacting concrete (SCC) specimens was carried out in order to characterize their mechanical properties and evaluate durability indicators.
The results showed that the addition of steel fibers to SCC was very effective in terms of increasing the post-cracking flexural resistance and the energy absorption, and did not affect significantly the selfcompacting requisites and the durability indicators of SCC.The study reported in this paper is part of the research project QREN number 5387, LEGOUSE - Development of cost competitive pre-fabricated modular buildings, involving the Companies Mota-Engil, CiviTest, the ISISE/University of Minho and PIEP. An experimental investigation on the post-cracking behaviour of Recycled Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete
Steel fibres resulting from the industry of tyre recycling can be efficiently employed for the
reinforcement of concrete structures. Recycled Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete (RSFRC) is a
promising candidate with technical, environmental and economic benefits for the
development of ductile, high strength and durable constructive systems, as it is required for
breakwater elements used on the protection of coastal zones.
For assessing the potentialities of recycled steel fibres (RSF) as concrete reinforcement, an
experimental program was performed in the present work by comparing the following
properties of concrete reinforced with industrial steel fibres (ISF) and with RSF: compressive
strength, modulus of elasticity, flexural strength, flexural toughness and indirect tensile
strength.
Under chloride attack, the durability performance of RSFRC requires the assessment of its
corrosion resistance. To evaluate the corrosion effects on the post-cracking response of
RSFRC, double edge wedge splitting tensile tests were conducted in RSFRC specimens
previously exposed to aggressive chloride environment.
The obtained results demonstrate that, for the adopted industrial and recycled fibres, the
last ones had not inferior post-cracking strengthening performance than the first ones. The
corrosion action caused a slight decrease of the average post-cracking tensile strength of the RSFRC. The small percentage of rubber attached to RSF surface had a negligible effect in the corrosion resistance of RSFRC.FCT through PTDC/ECMEST/2635/2014 project, as well as the collaboration of CiviTest Company in the production

Corrosion effects on pullout behavior of hooked steel fibers in self-compacting concrete
Fiber reinforced concrete structures are subjected to chloride and carbonation penetration that could initiate corrosion of steel fibers, with eventual pernicious consequences in terms of structural and durability performance. Cracks in concrete are known to hasten initiation of steel corrosion in reinforced concrete structures. The investigation of the impact of cracks on the corrosion initiation and the associated interfacial damage between concrete and steel fibers is important for understanding the mechanical behavior of steel fiber reinforced concrete. In the present work, with the aim of studying the corrosion action on the mechanical behavior of cracked Steel Fiber Reinforced Self-Compacting Concrete (SFRSCC), an experimental program was performed to characterize the corrosion of hooked-end steel fibers and to assess the fiber pullout behavior in cracked concrete, previously subject to the action of corrosion by exposure to aggressive chloride environment. The study reported in this paper is part of the research project QREN number 5387, LEGOUSE - Development of cost competitive pre-fabricated modular buildings, involving the Companies Mota-Engil, CiviTest, the ISISE/University of Minho and PIEP.
Deste modo, o
estudo do comportamento interfacial
BACRFA. Com o intuito de avaliar estes efeitos,
no presente trabalho
a corrosão
avaliada por intermédio de técnicas
eletroquímicas.
Os ensaios
eletroquímicos
realizados revelaram
