B Vitamins, Homocysteine and Bone Health.

Nutrition is one of the most important modifiable factors involved in the development and maintenance of good bone health. Calcium and Vitamin D have confirmed and established roles in the maintenance of proper bone health. However, other nutritional factors could also be implicated. This review will explore the emerging evidence of the supporting role of certain B Vitamins as modifiable factors associated with bone health. Individuals with high levels of homocysteine (hcy) exhibit reduced bone mineral density (BMD), alteration in microarchitecture and increased bone fragility. The pathophysiology caused by high serum homocysteine is not completely clear regarding fractures, but it may involve factors, such as bone mineral density, bone turnover, bone blood flow and collagen cross-linking. It is uncertain whether supplementation with B Vitamins, such as folate, Vitamin B1, and Vitamin B6, could decrease hip fracture incidence, but the results of further clinical trials should be awaited before a conclusion is drawn

    An Extragenital Colonic Salpingiosis.

Endosalpingiosis is a rare condition characterized by the presence of benign fallopian tubal-like glandular epithelium derived from Mullerian ducts, usually affecting the serosal surfaces of the pelvis and peritoneum. It is histologically differentiated from endometriosis as endosalpingiosis lacks endometrial stroma. Endosalpingiosis tends to affect older women and has been associated with ovarian serous tumors of low malignant potential. The extragenital endosalpingosis is typically without symptoms, reported only once as chronic pelvic pain. It rarely affects the appendix but can be mistaken for acute appendicitis or appendiceal tumors. No reports of endoscopic findings have been never described. Its treatment is challenging and provides a multidisciplinary approach with gynecologist, surgeon and gastrointestinal endoscopist. Our case reports for the first time an endoscopic finding of colonic salpingiosis and it is challenging both for the diagnosis and for the treatment

Extra-osseous osteochondroma-like soft tissue mass of the patello-femoral space

BACKGROUND: Extraskeletal cartilaginous tumors are uncommon. Osteochondromas usually arise from the metaphyseal region of the growing skeleton. CASE PRESENTATION: A 53 year old man presented with a three years history of anterior knee pain and inability to flex his knee more than 90°. Clinical examination and imaging studies revealed a nodular calcific mass in the anterior portion of the knee, displacing the medial portion of the patellar tendon. Following excision, histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of extra-osseous osteochondroma-like soft tissue mass, with no recurrence 24 months after surgery. CONCLUSION: An integrated clinical-pathologic diagnosis helps to clarify the nature of extraskeletal cartilaginous tumors that can arise at unusual anatomic site. Complete local surgical excision is the management of choice

High Resolution Spectroscopy of 12B_Lambda by Electroproduction

An experiment measuring electroproduction of hypernuclei has been performed in Hall A at Jefferson Lab on a 12^{12}C target. In order to increase counting rates and provide unambiguous kaon identification two superconducting septum magnets and a Ring Imaging CHerenkov detector (RICH) were added to the Hall A standard equipment. An unprecedented energy resolution of less than 700 keV FWHM has been achieved. Thus, the observed \lam{12}{B} spectrum shows for the first time identifiable strength in the core-excited region between the ground-state {\it s}-wave Λ\Lambda peak and the 11 MeV {\it p}-wave Λ\Lambda peak.Comment: Paper submitted to Physical Review Letter

    Spectroscopy of Lambda-9Li by electroproduction

In the absence of accurate data on the free two-body hyperon-nucleon interaction, the spectra of hypernuclei can provide information on the details of the effective hyperon-nucleon interaction. Electroproduction of the hypernucleus Lambda-9Li has been studied for the first time with sub-MeV energy resolution in Hall A at Jefferson Lab on a 9Be target. In order to increase the counting rate and to provide unambiguous kaon identification, two superconducting septum magnets and a Ring Imaging CHerenkov detector (RICH) were added to the Hall A standard equipment. The cross section to low-lying states of Lambda-9Li is concentrated within 3 MeV of the ground state and can be fitted with four peaks. The positions of the doublets agree with theory while a disagreement could exist with respect to the relative strengths of the peaks in the doublets. A Lambda separation energy of 8.36 +- 0.08 (stat.) +- 0.08 (syst.) MeV was measured, in agreement with an earlier experiment.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figure

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Drimys brasiliensis Miers (Winteraceae) is used in folk medicine for the treatment of cancer. Its anti-tumor activity has been demonstrated in vitro models using extracts and isolated compounds. This study investigates the cytotoxic effects of stem bark extracts of D. brasiliensis as well as isolated compounds that may be responsible for the activitys and evaluates them in leukemia cells. The stem bark extract were subjected to column chromatography, and the structures of compounds were elucidated based on spectroscopic methods by using NMR and infrared spectroscopy and GC/MS. The cytotoxicity of the isolated compounds was evaluated in chronic myeloid (K562) and acute B lymphoblastic (Nalm6) leukemia cells using tetrazolium assay (MTT). Two new compounds were isolated 1 beta-O-p-methoxy-E-cinnamoyl-5 alpha-keto-11 alpha-enol-albicanol (1a) and the isomer 1 beta-O-p-methoxy-E-cinnamoyl-5 alpha-keto-11 beta-enol-albicanol (1b) and 1 beta-O-p-methoxy-E-cinnamoyl-isodrimeninol (2). The known compounds polygonal acid (3a) and the isomer isopolygonal acid (3b), fuegin (4a) and the isomer epifuegin (4b), the mixture drimanial (5) and 1 beta-O-(p-methoxy-E-cinnamoyl)-6 alpha-hydroxypolygodial (6) were also isolated. The drimanes (1-4) and drimanial (5), 1 beta-(p-coumaroyloxy)-polygodial (7), 1 beta-(p-methoxycinnamoyl)-polygodial (8), and polygodial (9) isolated previously were assessed in tumor cells. The IC50 values were between 3.56 and 128.91 mu M. 1-beta-(p-cumaroiloxi)-polygodial showed the best result with IC50 8.18 and 3.56 mu M by K562 and Nalm6, respectively. The chloroform extract of the stem bark of D. brasiliensis is a great source of drimane sesquiterpenes. Our experimental data suggest that drimanes are responsible for cytotoxicity activity demonstrated by this species, especially those with the aldehyde group linked to carbons C-11 and C-12.389791797Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico (CNPq)Fundacao de Apoio a Pesquisa Cientifica e Tecnologica do Estado de Santa Catarina (FAPESC)Programa Iberoamericano de Ciencia y Tecnologia para el Desarrollo (CYTED) [Red 0464 RIBECANCER]University of Vale do Itajai (UNIVALI)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq
