Adaptation, validation, reliability and factorial equivalence of the rosenberg self-esteem scale in colombian and Spanish population
The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale is the most widely used instrument to assess self-esteem. In light of the absence of adaptations in Colombia, this study seeks to validate and adapt this scale in the Colombian population, and perform factorial equivalence with the Spanish version. A total of 1,139 seniors (633 Colombians and 506 Spaniards) were evaluated; the individuals answered the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and sexual self-esteem scale. The average score of the items was similar to the questionnaire's theoretical average, and standard deviations were close to one. The psychometric properties of the items are generally adequate with alphas of .83 and .86 and significant (CI = .95) and correlations with the sexual self-esteem scale ranging from .31 and .41. Factorial equivalence was confirmed by means of a structural equation model (CFI = .912 and RMSEA = .079), thus showing a strong level of invariance. © Universidad Complutense de Madrid and Colegio Oficial de Psicólogos de Madrid
Mental health in the Montevidean adolescence: a view from the psychological well-being
Psychological well-being is usually associated with levels of
optimal functioning that include, not only the relationship between the subject and others, but also internal attitudes such
as mastery and personal growth. It was around this context
that the present research was proposed, whose main objective was to describe the psychological well-being of Montevidean adolescents using the Casullo’s BIEPS-J scale. A
cross-sectional, correlational and non-experimental study
was carried out with the participation of 473 adolescents from
public and private high schools in Montevideo. The scores
of psychological well-being and their dimensions were compared through parametric techniques such as t-test and oneway ANOVA, but also through robust tools for heteroscedasticity such as Welch’s t-test and Welch’s ANOVA. The association between variables was measured with the chi-square
test of independence, by calculating Fisher’s exact statistic
when the assumptions of that test were not met. Significant
differences were found in acceptance by sex (p=4×10-6) and
by age grouped into links (p=0.003), acceptance (p=0.036)
and psychological well-being (p=0.028). A statistically significant relationship was also found between sex and acceptance (p=1,28×10-4) and between sex and psychological well-being (p=0.007). The results are discussed from the
multidimensional well-being postulates and from the adolescent evolutionary indicators of the life cycle. In this sense,
the adolescent sample presents high values of psychological
well-being, expressed in an adequate functioning in control,
acceptance, links and projects. A possible differential trajectory of psychological well-being in its dimensions according
to sex is suggested
Prescription for COVID-19 by non-medical professionals during the pandemic in Colombia: a cross-sectional study
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increase in the behavior of self-medication (SM). Given the massive release of misleading information during the pandemic, some pharmacies recommend drugs such as ivermectin, azithromycin, hydroxychloroquine among others, which are not useful for preventing or treating COVID-19 and could expose patients to unnecessary side effects and interactions with other medications. People should be aware of the approved and non-approved uses, and potential side effects of these drugs. Rationale: The aim of this study was to know the drugs, including natural products and homeopathic drugs, offered by Colombian pharmaceutical establishments for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19, as well as the information provided on the safe use of the product. Methods: The study was done using the mystery shopping method, collecting data through telephone calls to each of the establishments by a trained individual pretending to be a patient with COVID-19 symptoms. The study included 482 pharmaceutical establishments from 16 Colombian departments. Results: Of 59 drugs suggested by pharmacies, the most recommended were azithromycin, ivermectin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and aspirin. The recommended dose was indicated in 85.5% (236) of the pharmaceutical establishments, and 14.5% (40) of them reported the most common adverse effects of the recommended product. About 9.4% (26) of the establishments reported possible interactions of the recommended drugs and substances with food, beverages, or supplements. Conclusion: The majority of the pharmaceutical establishments included in the study promoted inadequate self-medication for COVID-19 in Colombia during the pandemic.https://scienti.minciencias.gov.co/cvlac/visualizador/generarCurriculoCv.do?cod_rh=0001402116https://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=es&user=OW0mejcAAAAJ&view_op=list_works&sortby=pubdatehttps://scienti.minciencias.gov.co/gruplac/jsp/visualiza/visualizagr.jsp?nro=00000000004151https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4835-9739Introducción, Materiales y Métodos, Resultados, Conclusiones, Bibliografía
Character strengths and virtues in adolescence: measurement, comparison and relationship to psychological well-being
Peterson & Seligman's model of character strengths and vir tues is the basis for the "growing up strong" scale used in this work. The objectives were to determine the psychometric properties, to compare these strengths according to sex and age, and to specify which of these predict psychological well being. Instrumental, cross-sectional, descriptive and non-ex perimental research involving 257 adolescents from Montevi deo. The findings confirmed factorial and convergent validity of the scale and showed internal consistency values of 0.91. Women scored higher on curiosity (Z = 2.81, p<0.01), per spective (Z=3.97, p<0.001), kindness (Z=3.20, p<0.01). love (Z=4.09, p<0.001) and equity (Z=3.33, P<0.01), while men scored higher on enthusiasm (Z=3.35, p<0.01) and leadership (Z = 2.38, p<0.05). Differences according to age were found in persistence (H=8.80, p<0.05), team work (H=9.51, p<0.05), prudence (H= 13.19, p<0.01) and self-regulation (H=11.61, p<0.01). Strengths such as cre ativity (OR=2.38, p<0.001), courage (OR=2.05, p<0.001). kindness (OR=3.48, p<0.001) and gratitude (OR=2.83, p<0.001) predicted high scores of psychological well-being. correctly classifying 89.92% of the subjects. Similar results were found in the other dimensions of this construct. It is con cluded: (a) the "growing up strong" scale presents adequate psychometric properties that suggest its use to measure the construct in adolescents; (b) there are differences in some character strengths according to sex and age, and (c) the promotional role of character strengths in psychological well being is verified
Measurement of character strengths in adolescents and their prediction in coping and psychological well-being
honestidad, amabilidad, inteligencia social, equidad,
The construct of character strengths and virtues arises from
research undertaken by Peterson and Seligman. Based on
this theory, García-Álvarez proposed an alternative measurement
known as “growing up strong”, a scale aimed at
evaluating this variable in adolescents. The objectives of the
work were to determine the psychometric properties of this
instrument in young Marabineans, as well as also to establish
differences according to sex and age, and to clarify which
of these strengths were predictors of coping strategies and
psychological well-being. An instrumental, cross-sectional,
correlational and non-experimental research was carried
out with the participation of 528 subjects. Confirmatory factor
analysis suggested that the data were consistent with the
hexadimensional theoretical model, and adequate adjustment
figures were found. There was also evidence of convergent
and discriminant validity and high global indices of internal
consistency, although some of the subscale coefficients
were low. Women exhibited higher scores than men on traits
such as open mind, perspective, honesty, kindness, social
intelligence, fairness, forgiveness, gratitude and spirituality;
while men scored higher only on enthusiasm. There were
also differences according to age favoring the more adults.
All strengths were significant predictors of coping strategies,
with the exception of that linked to alcohol and drug use.
These attributes also predicted the psychological well-being
of the adolescents globally and in terms of their dimensions. It
is concluded that the “growing up strong” scale is an appropriate
option to measure the construct in adolescents, both for
research purposes, and for therapeutic care, mental health
promotion and other prevention modalities in the field of adolescent
health
Psychometric properties of the PERMA well-being scale for adolescents:alternatives for its measurement
Adolescence is a stage in the life cycle that involves great changes in all facets of life. In this stage, the person isexposed to multiple risk and protective factors that can affect their health, so studying the construct of well-being is necessaryto understand more deeply the mental health in this period. Despite the above, an important absence of instruments designedfor this purpose has been observed in the Latin American context, so the aim of this research was to evaluate the psychometricproperties of the adolescent psychological well-being scale designed by Soler, based on Seligman’s PERMA theory, and topresent alternatives to the original factor structure. An instrumental investigation was carried out in which 779 adolescentsfrom Montevideo participated, a sample that was randomly divided into two parts to carry out a cross-validation. An exploratoryfactor analysis was carried out in the training sample (n = 390), which revealed four and five dimensional options. Subsequently, four models were evaluated in the test sample (n=389) by means of a confirmatory factor analysis, highlighting twopentadimensional structures, the original (35 items) and the abbreviated (20 items). In both, positive correlations were foundwith well-being, self-esteem and self-efficacy, and negative correlations with depressive symptoms and psychological distress;however, the convergent and discriminant validity of the abbreviated model was superior. The internal consistency of eachfactor ranged from unacceptable to excellent, although on average it can be considered adequate. It is concluded that the scaleformulated by Soler in its abbreviated version has better psychometric properties than the original one, constituting a valid andreliable instrument that can be administered in the Montevidean adolescent population to assess psychological well-being.Keywords: psychological well-being, adolescents, factor analysis, factor structure, validation, Montevideo
Effectiveness of a web-based health risk assessment with individually-tailored feedback on lifestyle behaviour: study protocol
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Physical inactivity, unhealthy dietary habits, smoking and high alcohol consumption are recognized risk factors for cardiovascular disease and cancer. Web-based health risk assessments with tailored feedback seem promising in promoting a healthy lifestyle. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a web-based health risk assessment with individually-tailored feedback on lifestyle behaviour, conducted in a worksite setting.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>The web-based health risk assessment starts with a questionnaire covering socio-demographic variables, family and personal medical history, lifestyle behaviour and psychological variables. Prognostic models are used to estimate individual cardiovascular risks. In case of high risk further biometric and laboratory evaluation is advised. All participants receive individually-tailored feedback on their responses to the health risk assessment questionnaire. The study uses a quasi-experimental design with a waiting list control group. Data are collected at baseline (T0) and after six months (T1). Within each company, clusters of employees are allocated to either the intervention or the control group. Primary outcome is lifestyle behaviour, expressed as the sum of five indicators namely physical activity, nutrition, smoking behaviour, alcohol consumption, and symptoms of burnout. Multilevel regression analysis will be used to answer the main research question and to correct for clustering effects. Baseline differences between the intervention and control group in the distribution of characteristics with a potential effect on lifestyle change will be taken into account in further analyses using propensity scores.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>This study will increase insight into the effectiveness of health risk assessments with tailored feedback and into conditions that may modify the effectiveness. Engineered Bivalent Ligands to Bias ErbB Receptor-mediated Signaling and Phenotypes
The ErbB receptor family is dysregulated in many cancers, and its therapeutic manipulation by targeted antibodies and kinase inhibitors has resulted in effective chemotherapies. However, many malignancies remain refractory to current interventions. We describe a new approach that directs ErbB receptor interactions, resulting in biased signaling and phenotypes. Due to known receptor-ligand affinities and the necessity of ErbB receptors to dimerize to signal, bivalent ligands, formed by the synthetic linkage of two neuregulin-1β (NRG) moieties, two epidermal growth factor (EGF) moieties, or an EGF and a NRG moiety, can potentially drive homotypic receptor interactions and diminish formation of HER2-containing heterodimers, which are implicated in many malignancies and are a prevalent outcome of stimulation by native, monovalent EGF, or NRG. We demonstrate the therapeutic potential of this approach by showing that bivalent NRG (NN) can bias signaling in HER3-expressing cancer cells, resulting in some cases in decreased migration, inhibited proliferation, and increased apoptosis, whereas native NRG stimulation increased the malignant potential of the same cells. Hence, this new approach may have therapeutic relevance in ovarian, breast, lung, and other cancers in which HER3 has been implicated
