    Fluctuations in Student Understanding of Newton's 3rd Law

    We present data from a between-student study on student response to questions on Newton's Third Law given throughout the academic year. The study, conducted at Rochester Institute of Technology, involved students from the first and third of a three-quarter sequence. Construction of a response curve reveals subtle dynamics in student learning not captured by simple pre/post testing. We find a a significant positive effect from direct instruction, peaking at the end of instruction on forces, that diminishes by the end of the quarter. Two quarters later, in physics III, a significant dip in correct response occurs when instruction changes from the vector quantities of electric forces and fields to the scalar quantity of electric potential. Student response rebounds to its initial values, however, once instruction returns to the vector-based topics involving magnetic fields.Comment: Proceedings of the 2010 Physics Education Research Conferenc

    Photographic Assessment of Change in Trichotillomania: Psychometric Properties and Variables Influencing Interpretation

    Although photographic assessment has been found to be reliable in assessing hair loss in Trichotillomania, the validity of this method is unclear, particularly for gauging progress in treatment. The current study evaluated the psychometric properties of photographic assessment of change in Trichotillomania. Photographs showing hair loss of adults with Trichotillomania were taken before and after participating in a clinical trial for the condition. Undergraduate college students (N = 211) rated treatment response according to the photos, and additional archival data on hair pulling severity and psychosocial health were retrieved from the clinical trial. Photographic assessment of change was found to possess fair reliability (ICC = 0.53), acceptable criterion validity (r = 0.51), good concurrent validity (r = 0.30–0.36), and excellent incremental validity (ΔR2 = 8.67, p \u3c 0.01). In addition, photographic measures were significantly correlated with change in quality of life (r = 0.42), and thus could be considered an index of the social validity of Trichotillomania treatment. Gender of the photo rater and pulling topography affected the criterion validity of photographic assessment (partial η2 = 0.05–0.11). Recommendations for improving photographic assessment and future directions for hair pulling research are discussed

    Mesoscopic one-way channels for quantum state transfer via the Quantum Hall Effect

    We show that the one-way channel formalism of quantum optics has a physical realisation in electronic systems. In particular, we show that magnetic edge states form unidirectional quantum channels capable of coherently transporting electronic quantum information. Using the equivalence between one-way photonic channels and magnetic edge states, we adapt a proposal for quantum state transfer to mesoscopic systems using edge states as a quantum channel, and show that it is feasible with reasonable experimental parameters. We discuss how this protocol may be used to transfer information encoded in number, charge or spin states of quantum dots, so it may prove useful for transferring quantum information between parts of a solid-state quantum computer.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    A colourful new Australian reaches Talaroo: the Tawny Coster butterfly, Acraea terpsicore.

    Since being first found in Australia near Darwin in 2012, the Tawny Coster butterfly (Acraea terpsicore; Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae) has spread rapidly. We report its presence at Talaroo Station between Mt Surprise and Georgetown in far north Queensland, the species being detected at six of 13 sites that were surveyed for butterflies in February 2017. More than ten individuals were present at three sites, and breeding was confirmed at one of these. Talaroo falls a little outside the predicted preference envelope for the species in being in uplands well away from the coast, and in that the vegetation is little-disturbed, prompting the notion that the Tawny Coster may be even more versatile in its occurrence than previously suggested

    The accompaniment of the large-scale dance "Ehe Lawn" in Babyotan Village, Masela Island, Southwest Maluku District, is a sub-element of the community's culture which is important and needs to be developed towards a steady stage and is expected to enrich the national culture. The accompanying Seka dance music consists of one large tifa, and two small tifa is a unit that is directly integrated with the large Seka dance in Babyotan village. Accompanied music is an element of traditional music from the Babyotan community as an expression of various social values, which are a force in the civilization of the community. This article aims to analyze the style and form of Seka dance accompaniment and various values that can be symbolically accommodated in the accompaniment of rithem music patterns. The existence of the Seka dance accompaniment in the context of the Babyotan community from the beginning and then spread to all regions in Maluku Barat Daya is one of the traditions to show the identity of the Maluku Barat Daya community from the beginning until now. This research was conducted using a qualitative methodological approach and has the aim to obtain a finding of 1) Musical styles and forms are used evenly in the "Ehe Lawn" dance format throughout the Maluku Barat Daya region; 2). Expressing social values that are expressionistically found in the pattern of the rhythm of the big Tifa and small Tifa as a unified musical accompaniment of the Seka dance.  AbstrakIringan tari skala besar “Ehe Lawn” di Desa Babyotan, Pulau Masela, Kabupaten Maluku Barat Daya, merupakan sub-elemen budaya masyarakat yang penting dan perlu dikembangkan menuju tahap diharapkan dapat memperkaya budaya nasional. Musik tari seka pengiring terdiri dari satu tifa besar, dan dua tifa kecil merupakan satu kesatuan yang menyatu langsung dengan tari seka besar di desa Babyotan. Musik pengiring merupakan salah satu unsur musik tradisional dari masyarakat Babyotan sebagai ekspresi dari berbagai nilai sosial yang menjadi kekuatan dalam peradaban masyarakat tersebut. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis gaya dan bentuk iringan tari seka, serta berbagai nilai yang dapat diakomodasi secara simbolis dalam pola musik rithem pengiring. Adanya pengiring tari seka dalam konteks masyarakat Babyotan dari awal dan kemudian menyebar ke seluruh daerah di Maluku Barat Daya, merupakan salah satu tradisi untuk menunjukkan identitas komunitas Maluku Barat Daya dari dulu hingga sekarang.     A theoretical simulation of the resonant Raman spectroscopy of the H2Oâ‹ŻCl2 and H2Oâ‹ŻBr2 halogen-bonded complexes

    The resonant Raman spectra of the H2O⋯Cl2 and H2O⋯Br2 halogen-bonded complexes have been studied in the framework of a 2-dimensional model previously used in the simulation of their UV-visible absorption spectra using time-dependent techniques. In addition to the vibrational progression along the dihalogen mode, a progression is observed along the intermolecular mode and its combination with the intramolecular one. The relative intensity of the inter to intramolecular vibrational progressions is about 15% for H2O⋯Cl2 and 33% for H2O⋯Br2. These results make resonant Raman spectra a potential tool for detecting the presence of halogen bonded complexes in condensed phase media such as clathrates and ice.Fil: Franklin Mergarejo, Ricardo.     Flight evaluation of advanced flight control systems and cockpit displays for powered-lift STOL Aircraft

    A flight research program was conducted to assess the improvements, in longitudinal path control during a STOL approach and landing, that can be achieved with manual and automatic control system concepts and cockpit displays with various degrees of complexity. NASA-Ames powered-lift Augmentor Wing Research Aircraft was used in the research program. Satisfactory flying qualities were demonstrated for selected stabilization and command augmentation systems and flight director combinations. The ability of the pilot to perform precise landings at low touchdown sink rates with a gentle flare maneuver was also achieved. The path-control improvement is considered to be applicable to other powered-lift aircraft configurations

    Coherent Quantum-Noise Cancellation for Optomechanical Sensors

    Using a flowchart representation of quantum optomechanical dynamics, we design coherent quantum-noise-cancellation schemes that can eliminate the back-action noise induced by radiation pressure at all frequencies and thus overcome the standard quantum limit of force sensing.
