New York, New York – Columbia Law School Professor Katherine Franke announced the creation of a new project that will bring cutting-edge research, strategy, and legal resources to the fight for gender-based equality. The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) Project will be housed at the Law School’s Center for Gender and Sexuality Law (CGSL), which Franke founded in 2004

Jerome Franke’s “Architectural Practice” Exercises for Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 62 and Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole in D minor, Op. 21

Since their original publications, Otakar Ševčík’s Analytical Studies & Exercises books have been used as practical guides to practicing standard violin repertoire. Jerome Franke (1948-2019) was Assistant Concertmaster of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra for approximately twenty-five years, Concertmaster of the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra and the Green Bay Symphony Orchestra, string advisor for the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Fox Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra, founder of the Cedarburg Chamber Ensemble and a founding member of Quartet Dubuffet, violin instructor at Wisconsin Lutheran College and conductor of the school’s “Chamber Strings\u27\u27 orchestra, and a crossover musician and recording artist. Franke, who studied with Scott Willits (a former student of Ševčík’s and the first representative of his methods in the US), wrote his own practice exercises for a selection of violin concertos from the standard repertoire. He developed a fresh, concise, and approachable way of passing on Ševčík’s tradition through his “Architectural Practice” exercises. The major part of this research focuses on Franke and his “Architectural Practice” exercises. This document presents them as a practical and approachable source for students and teachers. The “Architectural Practice” exercises target the most technically challenging passages and help guide the practice of them. Franke’s “Architectural Practice” exercises can serve as an extension of Ševčik\u27s Analytical Studies & Exercises for various violin works. Dr. Samantha George, Associate Professor of Violin at Lawrence University, co-presenter with Franke at the American String Teachers Association conferences in 2012 and 2015, co-author of two articles with Franke in the American String Teacher magazine, and former Associate Concertmaster of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, was a long-time colleague and friend to Franke, collaborating with him in teaching, performing, and conference presentations. Dr. George inherited Franke’s work upon his death in 2019 and provided the handwritten “Architectural Practice” exercises to the author for digitization and analysis for this paper

Hostages, Free Lunches and Institutional Gaps: The Case of the European Currency Union

    Get PDF
This paper argues that the strong member states of the European Currency Union are hostages of a financially distressed member state so that they are compelled to provide financial support. Moreover, due to the dynamics of the interaction game, a debt relief is a free lunch for the distressed country. This fosters moral hazard of distressed countries. In the absence of capital market control, European politics do not effectively monitor fiscal politics of member states. The lack of a long term strategy of the European Currency Union to deal with distressed states has undermined the credibility of politics. This lack is also explained by a lack of a European Insolvency Charter. A viable Union requires such a charter with rules for handling distress. Moreover, politics should determine a mechanism to coordinate politics and capital markets in their monitoring of fiscal and economic policy of member states.European Currency Union, European Insolvency Charter, hostages, free lunch, externalization hypothesis

Measuring orbital angular momentum superpositions of light by mode transformation

    Get PDF
We recently reported on a method for measuring orbital angular momentum (OAM) states of light based on the transformation of helically phased beams to tilted plane waves [Phys. Rev. Lett.105, 153601 (2010)]. Here we consider the performance of such a system for superpositions of OAM states by measuring the modal content of noninteger OAM states and beams produced by a Heaviside phase plate

On the correspondence between Light-Front Hamiltonian approach and Lorentz-covariant formulation for Quantum Gauge Theory

    Get PDF
The problem of the restoring of the equivalence between Light-Front (LF) Hamiltonian and conventional Lorentz-covariant formulations of gauge theory is solved for QED(1+1) and (perturbatively to all orders) for QCD(3+1). For QED(1+1) the LF Hamiltonian is constructed which reproduces the results of Lorentz-covariant theory. This is achieved by bosonization of the model and by analysing the resulting bosonic theory to all orders in the fermion mass. For QCD(3+1) we describe nonstandard regularization that allows to restore mentioned equivalence with finite number of counterterms in LF Hamiltonian.Comment: LaTeX, 5 pages. The Role of Spatial Coherence and Orbital Angular Momentum of Light in Astronomy

    Get PDF
The orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light is potentially interesting for astronomical study of rotating objects such as black holes, but the effect of reduced spatial coherence of astronomical light sources such as stars is largely unknown. In a lab-scale experiment, we find that the detected OAM spectrum depends strongly on the position of the light-twisting object along the line of sight. We develop a simple intuitive model to predict the influence of reduced spatial coherence in astronomical observations, and discuss line-of-sight and intensity issues.Comment: updated versio
