Borders in Daily Life and the Press:: Harbin’s Russian and Chinese Newspapers in Early Twentieth Century
Boundary value problems and convolutional systems over rings of ultradistributions
One dimensional boundary value problems with lumped controls are considered. Such systems can be modeled as modules over a ring of Beurling ultradistributions with compact support. This ring appears naturally from a corresponding Cauchy problem. The heat equation with different boundary conditions serves for illustration
Deterministic quantum mechanics: The role of the Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution
To be accepted by the community, the claim that nuclear motion has to be treated classically must be tested for all kinds of phenomena. For the moment we claim that in a quantum chemical calculation, a classical description of nuclear motion is superior to the use of the Schrödinger equation, and investigate how far we get with this statement. In the present paper we address the question what nuclear quantum statistics means in this context. We will show that the Maxwell–Boltzmann velocity distribution evolves quickly in any molecular dynamics simulation and this guarantees the physically correct behavior of molecular systems. Using first-principles molecular dynamics simulations, or more precisely Car–Parrinello molecular dynamics, we investigate what this means for Bose-Einstein condensates and for Cooper pairs. It turns out that our approach can explain all relevant phenomena. As a consequence, we can introduce a deterministic formulation of quantum mechanics and can get rid of all the paradoxa in traditional quantum mechanics. The basic idea is to treat electrons and nuclei differently

Classical nuclear motion: Does it fail to explain reactions and spectra in certain cases?
Is a classical description of nuclear motion sufficient when describing chemical reactions and spectra? This question is interesting because many researchers use a classical description of nuclear motion in molecular dynamics simulations. The present paper investigates some phenomena that were previously attributed to nuclear quantum effects. The question is if these phenomena can be modeled with traditional Car–Parrinello molecular dynamics, that is, with a method which treats nuclear motion classically and which is widely applied to the simulation of chemical reactions and spectra. We find that for the investigated system no additional paradigm is needed for describing chemical reactions. The special reactivity observed for carbenes can be attributed to the special environment represented by a noble gas matrix and to an additional transition state that was not considered before. Also the infrared spectrum of porphycene is perfectly modeled by traditional Car–Parrinello molecular dynamics. More studies are necessary to decide to what extent classical nuclear motion can replace the quantum mechanical description

A feasibility study on the use of arithmetic-memory registers in the design of digital computer systems
The concept of combining arithmetic and memory capability on
a single semiconductor chip has become practical from a system's
viewpoint through the decreased cost of semiconductor memories and
high circuit densities achieved through large scale integration. This
paper describes a model for studying the feasibility of such systems.
An arithmetic-memory register is defined as the basic hardware
unit. A model consisting of instruction states and transition
states is developed. The model is then applied to both past and contemporary
computer structures. A general purpose machine is
formulated from a set of arithmetic-memory registers. The feasibility
of this structure is studied with respect to both performance
and implementation.
The utilization of arithmetic-memory registers is also shown
to be applicable to special-purpose systems. A system designed to
compute power spectra is described. The state model proved to be a
useful technique in the design of the system. Cost estimates and measures
of performance were significant factors influencing the feasibility
of the system. The structure was also found suitable for
real-time application

The effect of both hardware and software parameters on the efficiency of a paging system
Due to the present trend to utilize both virtual memory and
paging for the implementation of storage for large-scale computer
systems, it is of interest to analyze the pertinent parameters
associated with the operation of a paging system. This paper
describes the paging process and determines the effect of variations
in both hardware and software parameters on the efficiency of the
system.
The software parameters of randomness, sequentialness, and
recursiveness are introduced in the form of addressing patterns.
From these patterns and a knowledge of the memory specifications
of the system, an estimation of the average number of operations per
page transfer is determined. The mean free path is also defined for
the various addressing patterns. The hardware parameter of instruction cycle time and the
auxiliary storage parameters are introduced. From these values
and the mean free path, an expression for processor ratio is developed.
It is the variation of this processor ratio for different values
of the hardware and software parameters which determines the
effectiveness of the paging process. This variation is examined, and
the interaction of the parameter on the performance of the system
is determined thereby rendering a more effective paging system
