Double transitivity of Galois Groups in Schubert Calculus of Grassmannians

We investigate double transitivity of Galois groups in the classical Schubert calculus on Grassmannians. We show that all Schubert problems on Grassmannians of 2- and 3-planes have doubly transitive Galois groups, as do all Schubert problems involving only special Schubert conditions. We use these results to give a new proof that Schubert problems on Grassmannians of 2-planes have Galois groups that contain the alternating group. We also investigate the Galois group of every Schubert problem on Gr(4,8), finding that each Galois group either contains the alternating group or is an imprimitive permutation group and therefore fails to be doubly transitive. These imprimitive examples show that our results are the best possible general results on double transitivity of Schubert problems.Comment: 25 page

Subjective Expected Utility Theory with “Small Worlds”

We model the notion of a "small world" as a context dependent state space embedded into the "grand world". For each situation the decision maker creates a "small world" reflecting the events perceived to be relevant for the act under consideration. The "grand world" is represented by an event space which is a more general construction than a state space. We retain preference axioms similar in spirit to the Savage axioms and obtain, without abandoning linearity of expectations, a subjective expected utility theory which allows for an intuitive distinction between risk and uncertainty. We also obtain separation of subjective probability and utility as in the state space models.subjective expected utility; decision making under uncertainty; uncertainty aversion; Ellsberg paradox

Rosa Luxemburg: Living and Thinking the Revolution

    Get PDF
Rosa Luxemburg lived a revolutionary life which determined her theoretical reflections about revolution and the role of the masses within it. The present study provides an analysis of Luxemburg's thoughts about and experiences with revolutionary processes and shows how she further developed Marxist ideas about the path and methods to achieve a democratic socialism as the result of a successful revolution. Next to the theoretical debate with Eduard Bernstein and her experiences during the Russian Revolution of 1905, the book also takes a closer look at Luxemburg’s theoretical reflections about revolution in the years before and during the First World War, the Russian Revolution of 1917 as well as the German Revolution of 1918/19. The book therefore offers a concise analysis of Luxemburg's life as well as her combination of revolution theory and revolutionary practice

The Amur Society (often falsely translated as Black Dragon Society) was a resource for the Japanese military with regard to the preparation of the Russo-Japanese War, but the real impact, as stated in the later publications by members of the society, might be exaggerated. The present article will outline the influence of this right wing secret society related to the preparation of the Russo-Japanese War at the home front and abroad. It will evaluate the actions by the members of the society and try to answer the question, how important a small right wing society could have been for the course of Japan’s foreign policy
