Refractive index in holographic superconductors
With the probe limit, we investigate the behavior of the electric
permittivity and effective magnetic permeability and related optical properties
in the s-wave holographic superconductors. In particular, our result shows that
unlike the strong coupled systems which admit a gravity dual of charged black
holes in the bulk, the electric permittivity and effective magnetic
permeability are unable to conspire to bring about the negative
Depine-Lakhtakia index at low frequencies, which implies that the negative
phase velocity does not appear in the holographic superconductors under such a

Unbalanced Holographic Superconductors and Spintronics
We present a minimal holographic model for s-wave superconductivity with
unbalanced Fermi mixtures, in 2+1 dimensions at strong coupling. The breaking
of a U(1)_A "charge" symmetry is driven by a non-trivial profile for a charged
scalar field in a charged asymptotically AdS_4 black hole. The chemical
potential imbalance is implemented by turning on the temporal component of a
U(1)_B "spin" field under which the scalar field is uncharged. We study the
phase diagram of the model and comment on the eventual (non) occurrence of
LOFF-like inhomogeneous superconducting phases. Moreover, we study "charge" and
"spin" transport, implementing a holographic realization (and a generalization
thereof to superconducting setups) of Mott's two-current model which provides
the theoretical basis of modern spintronics. Finally we comment on possible
string or M-theory embeddings of our model and its higher dimensional
generalizations, within consistent Kaluza-Klein truncations and brane-anti

A Hybrid Higgs
We construct composite Higgs models admitting a weakly coupled Seiberg dual
description. We focus on the possibility that only the up-type Higgs is an
elementary field, while the down-type Higgs arises as a composite hadron. The
model, based on a confining SQCD theory, breaks supersymmetry and electroweak
symmetry dynamically and calculably. This simultaneously solves the \mu/B_\mu
problem and explains the smallness of the bottom and tau masses compared to the
top mass. The proposal is then applied to a class of models where the same
confining dynamics is used to generate the Standard Model flavor hierarchy by
quark and lepton compositeness. This provides a unified framework for flavor,
supersymmetry breaking and electroweak physics. The weakly coupled dual is used
to explicitly compute the MSSM parameters in terms of a few microscopic
couplings, giving interesting relations between the electroweak and soft
parameters. The RG evolution down to the TeV scale is obtained and salient
phenomenological predictions of this class of "single-sector" models are

Historical analysis of the Brazilian cervical cancer screening program from 2006 to 2013: a time for reflection
BACKGROUND: The Cervical Cancer Database of the Brazilian National Health Service (SISCOLO) contains information regarding all cervical cytological tests and, if properly explored, can be used as a tool for monitoring and managing the cervical cancer screening program. The aim of this study was to perform a historical analysis of the cervical cancer screening program in Brazil from 2006 to 2013.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The data necessary to calculate quality indicators were obtained from the SISCOLO, a Brazilian health system tool. Joinpoint analysis was used to calculate the annual percentage change.
RESULTS: We observed important trends showing decreased rates of low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL) and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) and an increased rate of rejected exams from 2009 to 2013. The index of positivity was maintained at levels below those indicated by international standards; very low frequencies of unsatisfactory cases were observed over the study period, which partially contradicts the low rate of positive cases. The number of positive cytological diagnoses was below that expected, considering that developed countries with low frequencies of cervical cancer detect more lesions annually.
CONCLUSIONS: The evolution of indicators from 2006 to 2013 suggests that actions must be taken to improve the effectiveness of cervical cancer control in Brazil
Single-Scale Natural SUSY
We consider the prospects for natural SUSY models consistent with current
data. Recent constraints make the standard paradigm unnatural so we consider
what could be a minimal extension consistent with what we now know. The most
promising such scenarios extend the MSSM with new tree-level Higgs interactions
that can lift its mass to at least 125 GeV and also allow for flavor-dependent
soft terms so that the third generation squarks are lighter than current bounds
on the first and second generation squarks. We argue that a common feature of
almost all such models is the need for a new scale near 10 TeV, such as a scale
of Higgsing or confinement of a new gauge group. We consider the question
whether such a model can naturally derive from a single mass scale associated
with supersymmetry breaking. Most such models simply postulate new scales,
leaving their proximity to the scale of MSSM soft terms a mystery. This
coincidence problem may be thought of as a mild tuning, analogous to the usual
mu problem. We find that a single mass scale origin is challenging, but suggest
that a more natural origin for such a new dynamical scale is the gravitino
mass, m_{3/2}, in theories where the MSSM soft terms are a loop factor below
m_{3/2}. As an example, we build a variant of the NMSSM where the singlet S is
composite, and the strong dynamics leading to compositeness is triggered by
masses of order m_{3/2} for some fields. Our focus is the Higgs sector, but our
model is compatible with a light stop (with the other generation squarks heavy,
or with R-parity violation or another mechanism to hide them from current
searches). All the interesting low-energy mass scales, including linear terms
for S playing a key role in EWSB, arise dynamically from the single scale
m_{3/2}. However, numerical coefficients from RG effects and wavefunction

Effects of recombinant LH supplementation to recombinant FSH during induced ovarian stimulation in the GnRH-agonist protocol: a matched case-control study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Some studies have suggested that the suppression of endogenous LH secretion does not seem to affect the majority of patients who are undergoing assisted reproduction and stimulation with recombinant FSH (r-FSH). Other studies have indicated that a group of normogonadotrophic women down-regulated and stimulated with pure FSH preparations may experience low LH concentrations that compromise the IVF parameters. The present study aimed to compare the efficacy of recombinant LH (r-LH) supplementation for controlled ovarian stimulation in r-FSH and GnRH-agonist (GnRH-a) protocol in ICSI cycles.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A total of 244 patients without ovulatory dysfunction, aged <40 years and at the first ICSI cycle were divided into two groups matched by age according to an ovarian stimulation scheme: Group I (n = 122): Down-regulation with GnRH-a + r-FSH and Group II (n = 122): Down-regulation with GnRH-a + r-FSH and r-LH (beginning simultaneously).</p> <p>Result(s)</p> <p>The number of oocytes collected, the number of oocytes in metaphase II and fertilization rate were significantly lower in the Group I than in Group II (<it>P </it>= 0.036, <it>P </it>= 0.0014 and <it>P </it>= 0.017, respectively). In addition, the mean number of embryos produced per cycle and the mean number of frozen embryos per cycle were statistically lower (<it>P </it>= 0.0092 and <it>P </it>= 0.0008, respectively) in Group I than in Group II. Finally the cumulative implantation rate (fresh+thaw ed embryos) was significantly lower (<it>P </it>= 0.04) in Group I than in Group II. The other clinical and laboratory results analyzed did not show difference between groups.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These data support r-LH supplementation in ovarian stimulation protocols with r-FSH and GnRH-a for assisted reproduction treatment.</p
CsA can induce DNA double-strand breaks: implications for BMT regimens particularly for individuals with defective DNA repair
Several human disorders mutated in core components of the major DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair pathway, non-homologous end joining (NHEJ), have been described. Cell lines from these patients are characterized by sensitivity to DSB-inducing agents. DNA ligase IV syndrome (LIG4) patients specifically, for unknown reasons, respond particularly badly following treatment for malignancy or BMT. We report the first systematic evaluation of the response of LIG4 syndrome to compounds routinely employed for BMT conditioning. We found human pre-B lymphocytes, a key target population for BMT conditioning, when deficient for DNA ligase IV, unexpectedly exhibit significant sensitivity to CsA the principal prophylaxis for GVHD. Furthermore, we found that CsA treatment alone or in combination with BU and fludarabine resulted in increased levels of DSBs specifically in LIG4 syndrome cells compared to wild-type or Artemis-deficient cells. Our study shows that CsA can induce DSBs and that LIG4 syndrome patient's fail to adequately repair this damage. These DSBs likely arise as a consequence of DNA replication in the presence of CsA. This work has implications for BMT and GVHD management in general and specifically for LIG4 syndrome
Strong coupling, discrete symmetry and flavour
We show how two principles - strong coupling and discrete symmetry - can work
together to generate the flavour structure of the Standard Model. We propose
that in the UV the full theory has a discrete flavour symmetry, typically only
associated with tribimaximal mixing in the neutrino sector. Hierarchies in the
particle masses and mixing matrices then emerge from multiple strongly coupled
sectors that break this symmetry. This allows for a realistic flavour
structure, even in models built around an underlying grand unified theory. We
use two different techniques to understand the strongly coupled physics:
confinement in N=1 supersymmetry and the AdS/CFT correspondence. Both
approaches yield equivalent results and can be represented in a clear,
