New christians, converted hindus, jesuits, and the inquisition
This paper analyses the complex relationship between Jesuits, New Christians,
converted Hindus, and the Inquisition. The collaboration of Jesuits with the Holy
Office did not prevent voices from being raised within the Society of Jesus against
the tribunal’s practices, which were observed with caution by the first Jesuit leaders.
For their part, conversos were initially welcomed into the Society and even assumed
high positions in the Society, such as the second superior general. Despite the difficult
history of intolerance and inquisitorial persecution against New Christians, in the
seventeenth century, Jesuits in Portugal became prominent advocates of their cause.
In turn, Hindu conversion strategies fueled disputes and tensions between the Society
of Jesus and the Inquisition of Goa. Their strained relations make these disputes an
important historiographical subject for understanding many of the plots and dramas
of Portuguese society under the Old Regime.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Pierre-Antoine Fabre
Pierre-Antoine Fabre is one of the most notable French historians of our time, best known for his studies of religious history and anthropology, in their relations with cultural and political history. Remarkable works include Ignacio de Loyola. El Lugar de la Imagén (Ciudad de México, 2012 [1992]), and La XXVe Session du Concile de Trente (Paris, 2013), which approach reception and representation processes. His research on the history of the Jesuits, on literature of spirituality and modern devotional movements, drawing on the legacy of Marcel Bataillon and Michel de Certeau, had a significant influence on the renewal of epistemological and methodological perspectives in the scientific field of European religious history, both as a foundation, and a promotor of other research fields, which benefit from the extension of critical approaches to the religious phenomena.
The DNA of Portuguese language and culture: the «Pioneer Works of Portuguese Culture» project
The identity of Portugal has been developed through its culture, which has produced its pioneer works between the 12th and 18th centuries. The Pioneer Works of Portuguese Culture (Franco and Fiolhais, 2017) is a collection of innovative works, now in press, which contributed to shaping Portuguese language and culture.
The Pioneer Works aim to make the founding texts of Portuguese culture widely known. According to our criteria of selection, these are the texts written in Portuguese language that inaugurated certain areas of knowledge within the country borders. The introductory essays of each volume contain essential insights about these texts that created knowledge in the most diverse fields, including grammar, history, fictional literature, pedagogy, ethics, politics, theology, nautical sciences, botany, medicine, physics, chemistry, engineering, etc., besides literature and artistic creation. A project of this kind, based on a rigorous systematization and textual assessment of the original sources, allows the dissemination of research results achieved in the last decades, after the discovery of previously unpublished or little known sources.
Between Nero and Prometheus: the Marquis of Pombal and the emergence of party history (18th-21st centuries)
Obra sob a coordenação de: José Eduardo Franco, Luiz Eduardo Oliveira e Christine VogelHaving achieved international fame during his lifetime and becoming the political figure most written
about inside and outside his native country, the national importance of the Marquis of Pombal
was confirmed in 1934, when a monumental statue was erected in his honor in the center of Lisbon,
Pombal. However, until today he is the object of polemics and controversies, in universities and at the
tables of bars, where, throughout history, supporters and opposers of his political and administrative
acts dispute primacy, making the mythology of the Marquis of Pombal something alive in Portuguese
culture. In addition to taking care of his own image, Pombal organized a powerful propaganda scheme
that did not exclude symbolic paintings, medals, panegyrics, sonnets and theatrical plays in his honor,
exerting absolute control over his own biography. However, if during his government his supporters
and sycophants glorified him, there were few who remained by his side after the death of D. José and
his fall from government, during the so-called “viradeira”. This book, which brings together a team of
experienced researchers dedicated to studying of the Pombaline period, is a proof that the Marquis of
Pombal, being one of the most fascinating and controversial characters in European history, is part of a
central and decisive moment in the history of the Portuguese empire, but also in the process of organization
and unification of Brazil.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Portugal e a história do futuro do mundo no Pensamento Utópico do Padre António Vieira
