    Melanoma expression analysis with Big Data technologies

    Melanoma is a highly immunogenic tumor. Therefore, in recent years physicians have incorporated drugs that alter the immune system into their therapeutic arsenal against this disease, revolutionizing in the treatment of patients in an advanced stage of the disease. This has led us to explore and deepen our knowledge of the immunology surrounding melanoma, in order to optimize its approach. At present, immunotherapy for metastatic melanoma is based on stimulating an individual’s own immune system through the use of specific monoclonal antibodies. The use of immunotherapy has meant that many of patients with melanoma have survived and therefore it constitutes a present and future treatment in this field. At the same time, drugs have been developed targeting specific mutations, specifically BRAF, resulting in large responses in tumor regression (set up in this clinical study to 18 months), as well as a higher percentage of long-term survivors. The analysis of the gene expression changes and their correlation with clinical changes can be developed using the tools provided by those companies which currently provide gene expression platforms. The gene expression platform used in this clinical study is NanoString, which provides nCounter. However, nCounter has some limitations as the type of analysis is restricted to a predefined set, and the introduction of clinical features is a complex task. This paper presents an approach to collect the clinical information using a structured database and a Web user interface to introduce this information, including the results of the gene expression measurements, to go a step further than the nCounter tool. As part of this work, we present an initial analysis of changes in the gene expression of a set of patients before and after targeted therapy. This analysis has been carried out using Big Data technologies (Apache Spark) with the final goal being to scale up to large numbers of patients, even though this initial study has a limited number of enrolled patients (12 in the first analysis). This is not a Big Data problem, but the underlaying study aims at targeting 20 patients per year just in Málaga, and this could be extended to be used to analyze the 3.600 patients diagnosed with melanoma per year.Universidad de Málaga.     Antitumor and antiangiogenic potential of solomonamide synthesis intermediates

    Es comunicación (formato panel) a congreso internacionalIn this work we developed a new synthetic strategy towards the solomonamides. a novel class of cyclopeptides of marine origin. The described synthetic approach utilized an olefin metathesis reaction to form the [15]-membered ring contained in these natural products. During the synthetic process, a diverse set of analogues was generated and we evaluated their potential antitumor activity in vitro. For this purpose we performed in vitro proliferation assays, determining the IC50 values of the compounds in a panel of tumor cell lines. In addition, we evaluated the possible antiangiogenic effects of these solomonamide analogues by using in vitro endothelial cell differentiation assays. Our results showed that the potential antitumor and antiangiogenic activity of the studied analogues depended on their chemical structure, suggesting that the presence of specific functional groups could be responsible of their biological activity.     The multiagent systems have proved to be a useful tool in the design of solutions to problems of distributed nature. In a distributed system, it is possible that the data, the control actions or even both, be distributed. The concept of agent is a suitable notion for capturing situations where the global knowledge about the status of a system is complex or even impossible to acquire in a single entity. In automotive applications, there exist a great number of scenarios of distributed nature, such as the traffic coordination, routes load balancing problems, traffic negotiation among the infrastructure and cars, to mention a few. Even more, the autonomous driving features of the new generation of cars will require the new methods of car to car communication, car to infrastructure negotiation, and even infrastructure to infrastructure communication.     Design and evaluation of a graphical user interface for facilitating expert knowledge transfer: a teleoperation case study

    Nowadays, teleoperation systems are increasingly used for the training of specific skills to carry out complex tasks in dangerous environments. One of the challenges of these systems is to ensure that the time it takes for users to acquire these skills is as short as possible. For this, the user interface must be intuitive and easy to use. This document describes the design and evaluation of a graphical user interface so that a non-expert user could use a teleoperated system intuitively and without excessive training time. To achieve our goal, we use a user-centered design process model.     Early postoperative complications of transvaginal access in minimally invasive sigmoid colon procedures

    Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate early (the first 30 days) postoperative complications after transvaginal resection of the sigmoid colon. Material and Methods: A total of 23 laparoscopy-assisted transvaginal resections of the sigmoid colon and 1 NOTES transvaginal sigmoid resection were performed in the course of 3 years. Postoperative complications were recorded in a prospective manner. Results: In the group of 24 patients operated on using the transvaginal approach, 6 (25%) complications were recorded, including 3 urinary tract infections, 2 vaginal bleedings, and 1 abdominal trocar site hernia. Conclusion: Early postoperative complication rate after transvaginal resection of the sigmoid colon is relatively low and the clinical complications are not severe

    In this paper, we will present a wider view on the relationship between interval-valued fuzzy sets and interval type-2 fuzzy sets, where we will show that interval-valued fuzzy sets are a particular case of the interval type-2 fuzzy sets. For this reason, both concepts should be treated in a different way. In addition, the view presented in this paper will allow a more general perspective of interval type-2 fuzzy sets, which will allow representing concepts that could not be presented by interval-valued fuzzy sets

    The influence of sensor placement on in-situ ultrasound wave velocity measurement.

    Ultrasound wave velocity was measured in 30 pieces of Spanish Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), 90 x 140 mm in cross-section and 4 m long. Five different sensor placement arrangements were used: end to end (V0), face to opposite face, edge to opposite edge, face to same face and edge to same edge. The pieces were successively shortened to 3, 2 and 1 m, in order to obtain these velocities and their ratios to reference value V0 for different lengths and angles with respect to the piece axis for the crossed measurements. The velocity obtained in crossed measurements is lower than V0. A correction coefficient for crossed velocities is proposed, depending on the angle, to adjust them to the V0 benchmark. The velocities measured on a surface, are also lower than V0, and their ratio with respect to V0 is close to 0.97 for distances equal to or greater than 18 times the depth of the beam
