Change and development in the Spanish wine industry, 1950-2009

In recent years the European winegrowing regions have been carrying out deep changes in response to increasing international competition, outstanding the case of Spain. This study analyses the main sequences of changes the Spanish wine industry has undergone: the evolution of consumption; the role of exports; the spread of marketing and business organization; the factors that have been involved in the modernization of the wineries. An initial valuation leads us to conclude that it has been an authentic wine revolution in reference to the transformations that have occurred in a period of farming changes and technological modernization for the businessesWine industry revolution, technological modernization, enological change, Spain, twentieth century.

Testing for linear and quadratic effects between price adaptation and export performance: The impact of values and perceptions

Managerial perceptions are essential in explaining strategic decisions. It is, therefore, surprising that despite the number of studies that have examined the impact of managerial characteristics in exporting, little research has been reported in the export literature that investigates the importance of managers' perceptions on strategic decisions and resultant performance outcomes. To address this gap in the literature, the authors examine the key determinants of managers' psychic distance as well as its influence on international pricing decisions, and this in turn, on the export performance of SMEs. We also examine the quadratic effects of price adaptation on export performance. This is particularly relevant since price adaptation and export performance have been assumed in the literature to have a linear relationship. The results show that managers' perceptions have a significant impact on pricing decisions and resultant performance outcomes. Our findings also indicate that price adaptation has an inverted U-shaped relationship with export performance

Human Love and Divine Love in Spinoza’s Work

El presente trabajo analiza las diversas formas de amor en la obra de Espinosa según los diversos géneros de conocimiento y el tipo de objeto amado, estableciendo una neta contraposición entre el amor pasional a las cosas finitas y el amor intelectual a Dios, entendido como la fuerza vivificante que es causa inmanente de todas las cosas, comparando a nuestro autor con sus antecedentes más inmediatos, especialmente con el judío neoplatónico León Hebreo, el neoestoicismo y Renato Descartes.The present work analyzes the diverse forms of love in the work of Espinosa according to the different genres of knowledge and the type of object loved, establishing a clear contrast between the passionate love of finite things and the intellectual love of God, understood as the force vivifying, which is the immanent cause of all things, comparing our author with his more immediate antecedents, especially with the Neo-Platonic Jew Leo Hebreo, the neoestoicism and Renato Descartes

In situ decolorization monitoring of textile dyes for an optimized UV-LED/TiO2 reactor

Heterogeneous photocatalysis, using photocatalysts in suspension to eliminate diverse contaminants, including textile wastewater, has several advantages. Nevertheless, current absorbance and decolorization measurements imply sample acquisition by extraction at a fixed rate with consequent photocatalyst removal. This study presents online monitoring for the decolorization of six azo dyes, Orange PX-2R (OP2), Remazol Black B133 (RB), Procion Crimson H-EXL (PC), Procion Navy H-EXL (PN), Procion Blue H-EXL (PB), and Procion Yellow H-EXL (PY), analyzing the spectrum measured in situ by using the light scattering provided by the photocatalyst in suspension. The results obtained have corroborated the feasibility of obtaining absorbance and decolorization measurements, avoiding disturbances in the process due to a decrease in the volume in the reactor.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

La fundación Saint-Simón y el debate sobre la modernización en Francia: las pautas de una vocación homogeneizadora

La Fundación Saint-Simon, una asociación a medio camino entre los Think tank anglosajones y los clubes de cooptación franceses, trató, durante sus dieciocho años de existencia (1982-1999), de construir puentes entre políticos de derecha e izquierda moderada, empresarios, intelectuales, académicos e ideólogos políticos. Su objetivo sería un proyecto intelectual de reforma de la sociedad traída por unas elites que pretenden encarnar el bien común, en la línea de lo planteado por Pierre Rosanvallon, uno de sus máximos representantes, en el sentido de que, lo más urgente era producir ideas, elaborar proyectos, formular diagnósticos. Este artículo tiene como principal objetivo ofrecer una visión general de una asociación —con especial incidencia en sus fines, funcionamiento e influencia— que, reagrupando siempre a intelectuales, altos funcionarios e industriales intentó permanecer como un ámbito de iniciativas para formular proyectos orientados a una mejor inteligibilidad de nuestras sociedades contemporáneas. Se trataba de auspiciar un espacio para la elaboración y difusión de nuevas maneras de percibir el mundo social. Y así fue: allí se modelarían visiones compartidas de la sociedad que acabarían por abarcar una gran cantidad de cuestiones, con unas conclusiones que —pese a no ser jamás verificadas científicamente o llevadas al menos a la práctica— acabarán deviniendo en evidencias indiscutibles, en el contexto de una sociedad que se quiere plenamente homogeneizada
