Predictive Modeling of the Non-Profit Sector in the US

The Non-Profit Sector contributes almost $1 trillion to the US economy, representing 5.4% of GDP, and generating over 12 million jobs in 2017. Yi (2010) suggests that a better understanding of the factors that affect fundraising should be of great interest to policy makers, and fundraisers. However, the workings of the sector are subject of much debate. Matsunaga, Yamauchi and Okuyama (2010) relate its size to the Theory of Government Failure. Sokolowski (2013) proposes that government funding does have a positive effect on revenues. Curry, Rodin and Carlson (2012) suggested they swing with GDP, but, Berman, Brooks and Murphy (2006) contend that macroeconomic variables do not affect short-run dynamics. List (2011) found that non-profit revenues react more to economic upswings than downturns. And the National Philanthropic Trust (2016) relates ups and downs to certain events and public awareness. Wallace (2016) points to the fact that predictive modeling has focused big-donor analytics, aimed at the identification of potential donors. We set out instead to define a working model. After locating complete time series for an emblematic segment, the environmental cause, Factor Analysis allowed us to pinpoint independent variables. In 1965, Carmen Laforet, a well-known Spanish novelist, was invited to visit the United States. This was actually the first time the Spanish novelist set foot in the US, a country whose economic and sociocultural strength sharply contrasted the conditions of a depressed, postwar Francoist Spain. Paralelo 35 (The 35th Parallel) chronicles her journey and her sense of awe. These chronicles are based on the testimony of the Americans. Gravitational fields as generalized string models

We show that Einstein's main equations for stationary axisymmetric fields in vacuum are equivalent to the motion equations for bosonic strings moving on a special nonflat background. This new representation is based on the analysis of generalized harmonic maps in which the metric of the target space explicitly depends on the parametrization of the base space. It is shown that this representation is valid for any gravitational field which possesses two commuting Killing vector fields. We introduce the concept of dimensional extension which allows us to consider this type of gravitational fields as strings embedded in D-dimensional nonflat backgrounds, even in the limiting case where the Killing vector fields are hypersurface orthogonal.Comment: latex, 25 page

On the Benefits of Glide Symmetries for Microwave Devices

The presence of glide symmetries in periodic structures can introduce beneficial modifications in their electromagnetic properties. The difference between glide and non-glide periodic structures is due to the distinctive coupling between their constituent sub-unit cells. In this paper, we describe the recent discov eries on the remarkable properties of glide-symmetric periodic structures, which include widened stopbands, reduced dispersion, as well as enhanced anisotropy and magnetic response. These properties are explained through canonical structures simulated with two methods: mode matching and multimode transfer-matrix analysis. Management and conservation of fish populations in mountain streams: An holistic approach in the framework of LIFE DIVAQUA project

Producción CientíficaThe recovery of threatened and endangered fish species is among the highest priorities for biodiversity conservation in national parks and fisheries management in nearby areas. Threats to fish populations are numerous and include habitat fragmentation and degradation, proliferation of invasive and pathogen species, and climate change. Moreover, mountain areas often share the most critical threats. However, there does not exist a common strategy that integrates conservation and management plans for fish populations in mountain areas. In this regard, LIFE DIVAQUA designed a conservation strategy that integrates new knowledge gained from scientific research and long-term monitoring data, and considers the main threats to fish populations in mountain areas: (1) A long term monitoring program has been already implemented for 10 years, revealing temporal trends of fish populations in mountain streams. (2) Modeling of fish population by the use of environmental DNA allowed analyzing fish distributions in areas with scarce data and evaluating habitat suitability maps. (3) Fishways construction and removal of river barriers substantially increased the distribution area of endangered species. (4) The analysis of climate change effects in water temperature and hydrology led to the implementation of environmental flows under a climate change scenario; (5) Monitoring fish diseases, their occurrence, and temporal changes (e.g., Aeromonas spp.) can be used as an early warning signal of ecosystem unbalance. A pilot study for the implementation of this conservation and management plan in the LIFE DIVAQUA project is showing promising results. However, the success of conservation and management strategies requires a broader approach. This includes the participation of a wide range of partners and stakeholders and utilizes independent scientific oversight, assessment, and project adjustments to ensure conservation goals are met.Comisión Europea - (grant LIFE18 NAT/ES/000121

Explorando la Implementación de un Laboratorio Remoto de Impresión 3D para la Enseñanza de las TIC

El uso de las Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación, incluida la impresión 3D, es esencial en la vida moderna, pero su implementación en escuelas se enfrenta a limitaciones como el tiempo, el desperdicio de material y la accesibilidad. Los laboratorios remotos ofrecen una solución al brindar acceso a diversos recursos, mejorando la experiencia de aprendizaje para estudiantes. Se evaluó un laboratorio de impresión 3D proporcionado por LabsLand en centros de secundaria, utilizando un diseño pre/post test. Los resultados demostraron que el laboratorio remoto ayuda a los alumnos a comprender esta tecnología, especialmente en términos de orientación de impresión. La experiencia de usuario también fue medida y los estudiantes mostraron una gran satisfacción, lo que les ayudó a aprender mejor la tecnología. La integración de estos laboratorios remotos puede potenciar la educación en TIC en las escuelas y superar las limitaciones tradicionales
