    Differential Interests of Agricultural College Students as Measured by the Kuder Preference Record

    The Kuder Preference Record has enjoyed wide usage as a counselor\u27s aid in determining categorical interests of individuals. Many studies have been made in an attempt to discover differential interests of occupational groups and of those engaged in the pursuit of various college curricula. Such significant differences in interests as are found have been deemed to be of valuable assistance to the vocational and educational counselor. So far as the writer has been able to discover, little use has been made of the Kuder Preference Record in the measurement of interests of college students pursuing an agricultural curriculum. This may be due to the fact that, until the recent publication of Form C, there was no section of the Kuder Record which, by title at least, was suggestive of interests of those engaged in or preparing for agricultural work. While the outdoor section of Form C is pertinent for agricultural activities in general, it is reasonable to assume that the differential· interests which might occur in the other nine sections have important implications for guidance

    Expression of Hepatitis B Virus Surface Antigen Containing Y100C Variant Frequently Detected in Occult HBV Infection

    Small hepatitis B virus surface protein (S-HBsAg) variant Y100C has been associated with HBsAg-negative phenotype. To determine whether Y100C substitution yields impaired HBsAg or small amounts of HBsAg that may reduce HBsAg detection by commercial anti-HBsAg antibodies, two eukaryotic expression plasmids, one containing a wild-type S and the other an S gene from a Y100C variant, were constructed and their levels of HBsAg compared by ELISA after transfection of HuH7 cells. Unexpectedly, the extracellular HBsAg levels detected with Y100C plasmid were higher than those observed with the wild-type plasmid, but without statistical significance. We concluded that the Y100C substitution alone did not play a role in reducing HBsAg amounts or HBsAg affinity by commercial ELISA assay. Further studies on in vitro replication fitness with the complete genome of HBV isolates displaying or not Y100C substitution may elucidate whether this mutation affects HBV replication and consequently HBsAg production

    Na área de marketing sabe-se que a marca pode estabelecer relacionamento com o consumidor. A maioria dos estudos que investigam esse fenômeno sugere que essa interação pode ser compreendida sob a ótica das relações interpessoais. A personalização da marca é a principal condição para possibilitar que isso ocorra, já que é torná-la um "ser vivo". Entretanto, não há consenso por parte de todos os acadêmicos acerca desse fato, pois a marca (por ser um objeto inanimado) seria incapaz de interagir com o consumidor como se fosse uma pessoa. Logo, essa relação deveria ser estudada sob a perspectiva dos relacionamentos entre objeto inanimado e pessoa: relações parassociais. Para lançar luz sobre esse impasse, este artigo objetiva (re)compreender o relacionamento marca-consumidor sob a perspectiva de um novo arcabouço conceitual. Para tal, ao longo do estudo são lançadas 13 (treze) proposições, as quais sugerem as circunstâncias em que essa relação deva ser concebida.     Standardization of blood smears prepared in transparent acetate : an alternative method for the microscopic diagnosis of malaria

    Background: Due to students’ initial inexperience, slides are frequently broken and blood smears are damaged in microscopy training, leading to the need for their constant replacement. To minimize this problem a method of preparing blood smears on transparent acetate sheets was developed with the goal of implementing appropriate and more readily available teaching resources for the microscopic diagnosis of malaria. Methods: Acetate sheets derived from polyester were used to standardize the preparation and staining of thin and thick blood smears on transparent acetate sheets. Thick and thin blood smears were also prepared using the conventional method on glass slides. The staining was conducted using Giemsa staining for the thick and thin smears. Results: Microscopic examination (1,000x) of the thin and thick blood smears prepared on transparent acetate produced high-quality images for both the parasites and the blood cells. The smears showed up on a clear background and with minimal dye precipitation. It was possible to clearly identify the main morphological characteristics of Plasmodium, neutrophils and platelets. After 12 months of storage, there was no change in image quality or evidence of fungal colonization. Conclusion: Preparation of thin and thick blood smears in transparent acetate for the microscopic diagnosis of malaria does not compromise the morphological and staining characteristics of the parasites or blood cells. It is reasonable to predict the applicability of transparent acetate in relevant situations such as the training of qualified professionals for the microscopic diagnosis of malaria and the preparation of positive specimens for competency assessment (quality control) of professionals and services involved in the diagnosis of malaria

    O presente trabalho é parte de um estudo da influência da cobertura morta sôbre algumas propriedades físicas e químicas de um latosolo vermelho amarelo plantado com café. Nele os autores relatam apenas os resultados obtidos sôbre a conservação da umidade do solo, concluindo que a cobertura morta mostrou-se eficiente nesse particular. O seu efeito foi mais pronunciado nos períodos mais sêcos e principalmente na camada superficial.The present paper is part of a study about the influence of mulching on some chemical and physical properties on a soil "latosolo vermelho amarelo" of a coffee plantation. The authors reported only the results obtained on soil moisture conservation and concluded that the mulching had a better effect. The results were more effective on dry weather and mainly on soil upper layer about 0 to 2 cm

    Hepatitis B virus genotypes circulating in Brazil: molecular characterization of genotype F isolates

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Hepatitis B virus (HBV) isolates have been classified in eight genotypes, A to H, which exhibit distinct geographical distributions. Genotypes A, D and F are predominant in Brazil, a country formed by a miscegenated population, where the proportion of individuals from Caucasian, Amerindian and African origins varies by region. Genotype F, which is the most divergent, is considered indigenous to the Americas. A systematic molecular characterization of HBV isolates from different parts of the world would be invaluable in establishing HBV evolutionary origins and dispersion patterns. A large-scale study is needed to map the region-by-region distribution of the HBV genotypes in Brazil.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Genotyping by PCR-RFLP of 303 HBV isolates from HBsAg-positive blood donors showed that at least two of the three genotypes, A, D, and F, co-circulate in each of the five geographic regions of Brazil. No other genotypes were identified. Overall, genotype A was most prevalent (48.5%), and most of these isolates were classified as subgenotype A1 (138/153; 90.2%). Genotype D was the most common genotype in the South (84.2%) and Central (47.6%) regions. The prevalence of genotype F was low (13%) countrywide. Nucleotide sequencing of the S gene and a phylogenetic analysis of 32 HBV genotype F isolates showed that a great majority (28/32; 87.5%) belonged to subgenotype F2, cluster II. The deduced serotype of 31 of 32 F isolates was <it>adw4</it>. The remaining isolate showed a leucine-to-isoleucine substitution at position 127.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The presence of genotypes A, D and F, and the absence of other genotypes in a large cohort of HBV infected individuals may reflect the ethnic origins of the Brazilian population. The high prevalence of isolates from subgenotype A1 (of African origin) indicates that the African influx during the colonial slavery period had a major impact on the circulation of HBV genotype A currently found in Brazil. Although most genotype F isolates belonged to cluster II, the presence of some isolates belonging to clusters I (subgroup Ib) and IV suggests the existence of two or more founder viral populations of genotype F in Brazil.</p

However, the mechanisms promoting these changes are still controversial. The library model was put forward to explain the conservation of some satDNAs for long periods, predicting that related species share a common collection of satDNAs, which mostly experience quantitative changes. Here, we tested the library model by analyzing three satDNAs in ten species of Schistocerca grasshoppers. This group represents a valuable material because it diversified during the last 7.9 Myr across the American continent from the African desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria), and this thus illuminates the direction of evolutionary changes. By combining bioinformatic and cytogenetic, we tested whether these three satDNA families found in S. gregaria are also present in nine American species, and whether differential gains and/or losses have occurred in the lineages. We found that the three satDNAs are present in all species but display remarkable interspecies differences in their abundance and sequences while being highly consistent with genus phylogeny. The number of chromosomal loci where satDNA is present was also consistent with phylogeny for two satDNA families but not for the other. Our results suggest eminently chance events for satDNA evolution. Several evolutionary trends clearly imply either massive amplifications or contractions, thus closely fitting the library model prediction that changes are mostly quantitative.     This paper deal with one experiment carried out in order to study the correlation between petioles analysis and seed cotton yield. A 3X3X3 factorial with respect to N, P2 0(5) and K2 O was installed in a sandy soil with low potash content and medium amounts of total N and easily extractable P. Two kinds of petioles, newly mature were collected for analysis: those attached to fruit hearing branches, and petioles located on the stem; the first group is conventionally named "productive petioles"; The second one is called "not productive petioles". Petioles' sampling was done when the first blossoms appeared. Yield date showed a marked response to potash, both nitrogen and phosphorus having no effect. Very good correlation was found between petioles potash and yield. Both types of petioles samples were equally good indicators of the potash status of the plants. By mathematical treatment of the date it followes that the highed yield which was possible under experimental conditions, 1.562 kg of seed cotton per hectare would be reacher by using 128 kg of K2O per hectare. With this amount of potash supplied to the plants the following K levels would be expected in the petioles: "productive petioles" "not productive petioles" 1,93 % K 1,85 %

    Efeito residual de superfosfato, fosfato precipitado e fosforita de Olinda em cana-de-açúcar

    Este trabalho apresenta os resultados de um estudo dos efeitos residuais de fertilizantes fosfatados realizado com auxílio de fósforo radioativo, do método de Neubauer e do método do A. niger. Conclui-se, de um modo geral, que, dos adubos estudados, o menos solúvel, isto é, a Fosforita de Olinda é o que apresenta maior ação residual. O superfosfato e o Fertifos, um fosfato precipitado, praticamente não diferiram entre si. Os resultados obtidos em laboratório estão de acordo com aqueles conseguidos sob condição de campo.The residual effects of phosphate fertilizers are studied by means of radioactive phosphorus and the Neubauer and A. niger methods. The highest residual effect was observed for Olinda rockphosphate, the least soluble of those studied. Superphosphate and Fertifos, a pricipitated phosphate, were similar in their residual effects. The laboratory results agree with those obtained under field conditions
