Living City, A Collaborative Browser-Based Massively Multiplayer Online Game
This work presents the design and implementation of our Browser-based Massively Multiplayer Online Game, Living City, a simulation game fully developed at the University of Messina. Living City is a persistent and real-time digital world, running in the Web browser environment and accessible from users without any client-side installation. Today Massively Multiplayer Online Games attract the attention of Computer Scientists both for their architectural peculiarity and the close interconnection with the social network phenomenon. We will cover these two aspects paying particular attention to some aspects of the project: game balancing (e.g. algorithms behind time and money balancing); business logic (e.g., handling concurrency, cheating avoidance and availability) and, finally, social and psychological aspects involved in the collaboration of players, analyzing their activities and interconnections
[a cura dell'autore]BACKGROUND. The development of advanced medical imaging systems led to a new scientific discipline known as medical imaging. the main gol of this branch is to obtain three-dimensional information on human body organs through non-invasive methods. In tha last 10 years, many programs, that create images with 3D resolution following 2D images obtained by TC (Computer Tomography) and MRI (Magnetic Resonance) in patients with cancer or congenital malformation, have been developed. The 3D reconstructions find their main application in diagnose and plan surgical treatment in terms of approach type, choice of material, choice of the most suitable technique, safeguarding nearby structures. MATERIALS and METHODS. During the 3-year of study, 40 patients, 13 females and 27 males, aged 6 months to 17, were included in the study. They were subdivided into 3 groups based on the pathology: malformative (29/40), tumor (7/40) and others (4/40). All patients underwent TC or MRI. Based on CT or MRI images, 3D reconstruction was carried out with the Vr Render 0.81 program. All 40 children underwent surgery. All imaging have been discussed between pediatric surgeon and radiologist to plan surgical strategy. We do not report intraoperative complications or discrepancies between the 3D reconstruction and the real anatomy of the patient.
CONCLUSION. After retrospective analysis of our study, we can conclude that 3D reconstruction allows to better plan surgery of tumor and malformative pathologies. The Vr Render program guarantees to have a correct definition of the size of the pathology, its location and its relationships with nearby structures. The multidisciplinary team (Pediatric Surgeon and the Radiologist) has been Important for the management of complex pathologies. The future of 3D rendering is certainly a major application in surgical planning and training of young surgeons. [edited by author]XXIX n.s
Radiation from the first forming stars
The evolution of radiation emitted during the dynamical collapse of
metal-free protostellar clouds is investigated within a spherically symmetric
hydrodynamical scheme that includes the transfer of radiation and the chemistry
of the primordial gas. The cloud centre collapses on a time scale of about
10^5-10^6 years, thanks to line cooling from molecular hydrogen (H2). For most
of the collapse time, when the evolution proceeds self-similarly, the
luminosity slowly rises up to about 10^36 erg/s and is essentially due to H2 IR
line emission. Later, continuum IR radiation provides an additional
contribution, which is mostly due to the accretion of an infalling envelope
upon a small hydrostatic protostellar core which develops in the centre. We
follow the beginning of the accretion phase, when the enormous accretion rate
(~ 0.1 Msun/yr) produces a very high continuum luminosity of about 10^36 erg/s.
Despite the high luminosities, the radiation field is unable to affect the gas
dynamics during the collapse and the first phases of accretion, because the
opacity of the infalling gas is too small; this is quite different from
present-day star formation. We also find that the protostellar evolution is
similar among clouds with different initial configurations, including those
resulting from 3D cosmological simulations of primordial objects; in
particular, the shape of the molecular spectra is quite universal. Finally, we
briefly discuss the detectability of this pristine cosmic star formation
activity.Comment: 39 pages, 12 figures; revised version with major changes (including

A Framework for Designing 3d Virtual Environments
The process of design and development of virtual environments can be supported by tools and frameworks, to save time in technical aspects and focusing on the content. In this paper we present an academic framework which provides several levels of abstraction to ease this work. It includes state-of-the-art components we devised or integrated adopting open-source solutions in order to face specific problems. Its architecture is modular and customizable, the code is open-source.\u
Hydrodynamics of Cloud Collisions in 2D: The Fate of Clouds in a Multi-phase Medium
We have studied head-on collisions between equal-mass, mildly supersonic
(Mach number 1.5) HI clouds, in a standard Two-phase ISM (T_cl = 74 K, n_cl =
22 cm^-3, \chi = 100). We explore the role of various factors, including the
radiative cooling parameter \eta = t_rad/t_coll (t_coll=R_c/v_c), evolutionary
modifications on the cloud structure (by colliding clouds ``evolved'' through
independent motion within the intercloud medium (WIM)), and the symmetry of the
problem (by colliding initially identical clouds, evolved to different ages
before impact). The presence of bow shocks and ram pressure from material in
the cloud wake, developed during such evolution through the WIM, significantly
alters these interactions with respect to the standard case of non-evolved
clouds.
In general, in our adiabatic collisions the clouds are disrupted and convert
their gas into a few low density contrast clumps. By contrast, for symmetric
radiative cases we find that the two clouds coalesce, with almost all the
initial kinetic energy radiated away. On the other hand, for both adiabatic and
radiative collisions, asymmetric collisions have a much greater tendency to
disrupt the two clouds. Fragmentation of the clouds may occur, and
instabilities are in general enhanced. In addition, radiative cooling is less
efficient in our asymmetric interactions, so that those parts of the clouds
that initially seem to merge are more likely to re-expand and fade into the
WIM. Since the majority of real cloud collisions should be asymmetric for one
reason or another, we conclude that most gasdynamical diffuse cloud collisions
will be disruptive, at least in the absence of significant self-gravity or of a
significant magnetic field.Comment: Revised version, published in The Astrophysical Journal; 26 pages

La timpanoplastica aperta: indicazioni e nostri risultati a distanza
OBIETTIVI
In
The paper presents the important personality of the great Italian economist Francesco Ferrara who has been the first Director of the new School of Commerce founded in Venice in 1868. The paper is divided in two parts: the first part presents the main features of Francesco Ferrara as an economist, showing how he was clearly a supporter of a free-market oriented vision of the economic analysis and of the economic policy, not liking at all a vision of the economic analysis separated from the political implications, but definitely favouring a political economy vision. He was a sharp opponent of socialism, although admiring the logical power of Marx's thought, but not Marxian ideas. But he was also an opponent of intermediate visions leading to mediations in the field of economic policy. His rather radical positions led him to resign from the role of minister of Finance. In the second part the paper shows how Ferrara accepted the proposal of Luigi Luzzatti to be appointed as director of new School of Commerce of Ca' Foscari in summer 1868; the paper shows how the relations between Ferrara and Luzzatti were characterized by polemical moments, both because of the lines followed by Ferrara in appointing the professors of the new school and because of the openness shown by Luzzatti, and not liked at all by Ferrara, towards policies showing a favorable attitude towards social interventions. Eventually the disagreements were solved. Finally, the paper shows how Ferrara succeeded in appointing at Ca' Foscari some of the most important Italian economists of his time, such as Maffeo Pantaleoni
Massive black hole factories: Supermassive and quasi-star formation in primordial halos
Supermassive stars and quasi-stars (massive stars with a central black hole)
are both considered as potential progenitors for the formation of supermassive
black holes. They are expected to form from rapidly accreting protostars in
massive primordial halos. We explore how long rapidly accreting protostars
remain on the Hayashi track, implying large protostellar radii and weak
accretion luminosity feedback. We assess the potential role of energy
production in the nuclear core, and determine what regulates the evolution of
such protostars into quasi-stars or supermassive stars. We follow the
contraction of characteristic mass scales in rapidly accreting protostars, and
infer the timescales for them to reach nuclear densities. We compare the
characteristic timescales for nuclear burning with those for which the extended
protostellar envelope can be maintained. We find that the extended envelope can
be maintained up to protostellar masses of 3.6x10^8 \dot{m}^3 solar, where
\dot{m} denotes the accretion rate in solar masses per year. We expect the
nuclear core to exhaust its hydrogen content in 7x10^6 yrs. If accretion rates
\dot{m}>>0.14 can still be maintained at this point, a black hole may form
within the accreting envelope, leading to a quasi-star. Alternatively, the
accreting object will gravitationally contract to become a main-sequence
supermassive star. Due to the limited gas reservoir in dark matter halos with
10^7 solar masses, the accretion rate onto the central object may drop at late
times, implying the formation of supermassive stars as the typical outcome of
direct collapse. However, if high accretion rates are maintained, a quasi-star
with an interior black hole may form.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, submitted to A&A. Comments are welcom
Emangiopericitoma Vs Tumore glomico
