The imagery of cannibalism and its persistence over the centuries are investigated from an interdisciplinary and transcultural perspective, which brings together Literature, visual Arts, Anthropology and Psychoanalysis. Especially from Montaigne’s enlightening Des cannibales, and on till the 20th century, the anthropophagic motif, while combining repulsion and attraction, oscillates between the ancestral horror of its own dissolution and the pleasure of inescapable communion and appropriation. Sharp Instability Estimates for Bidisperse Convection with Local Thermal Non-equilibrium

We analyse a theory for thermal convection in a Darcy porous material where the skeletal structure is one with macropores, but also cracks or fissures, giving rise to a series of micropores. This is thus thermal convection in a bidisperse, or double porosity, porous body. The theory allows for non-equilibrium thermal conditions in that the temperature of the solid skeleton is allowed to be different from that of the fluid in the macro- or micropores. The model does, however, allow for independent velocities and pressures of the fluid in the macro- and micropores. The threshold for linear instability is shown to be the same as that for global nonlinear stability. This is a key result because it shows that one may employ linearized theory to ensure that the key physics of the thermal convection problem has been captured. It is important to realize that this has not been shown for other theories of bidisperse media where the temperatures in the macro- and micropores may be different. An analytical expression is obtained for the critical Rayleigh number and numerical results are presented employing realistic parameters for the physical values which arise

En ouvrant la voie à l’une des périodes les plus misogynes de sa culture, le XIXe siècle français – au-delà du stéréotype de la femme fatale, célébration hypocritement rhétorique – élabore une haine dont l’objet est le corps de la femme : ce dernier devient l’« espace » où les artistes et les intellectuels, suite à la prise de conscience du fait que la modernité a certainement enlevé l’aura à l’homme, exercent leurs frustrations et leurs traumatismes. Dans ce contexte, s’élabore une esthétique de la mortification du corps féminin, qui devient le lieu où s’exerce la haine et la cruauté de l’homme ; cet acharnement destructif révèle une pulsion visant à maîtriser la femme, perçue comme menaçante et incontrôlable

Continuous dependence on boundary and Soret coefficients in double diffusive bidispersive convection

We develop a theory for double diffusive convection in a double porosity material along the Brinkman scheme. The Soret effect is included whereby a temperature gradient may directly influence salt concentration. The boundary conditions on the temperature and salt fields are of general Robin type. A number of a priori estimates are established whereby, through energy arguments, we prove continuous dependence of the solution on the Soret coefficient and on the coefficients in the boundary conditions in the L^2- norm

On the minimum free energy for a rigid heat conductor with memory

A general closed expression for the minimum free energy, related to a state of a rigid heat conductor with memory, is derived in terms of Fourier-transformed fuctions, by using the coincidence of this quantity with the maximum recoverable work obtainable from that state. The linearized constitutive equations both for the internal energy and for the heat flux consider the effects of the actual values of the temperature and of its gradient, together with the ones of the integrated histories of such quantities, which are chosen to characterize the states of the material. An equivalent formulation for the minimum free energy is given and also used to derive explicit formulae for a discrete spectrum model
