Composite Wood–Concrete Structural Floor System with Horizontal Connectors
The concept of horizontal shear connection utilization on wood–concrete beams intends to be an alternative connection detail for composite wood–concrete decks. The volume of sawn-wood is over three times more expensive than concrete, in Brazil. In order to be competitive in the Brazilian market we need a composite deck with the least amount of wood and a simple and inexpensive connection detail. This research project uses medium to high density tropical hardwoods managed from the Brazilian Amazon region and construction steel rods. The beams studied are composed of a bottom layer of staggered wood boards and a top layer of concrete. The wood members are laterally nailed together to form a wide beam, and horizontal rebar connectors are installed before the concrete layer is applied on top. Two sets of wood–concrete layered beams with horizontal rebar connectors (6 and 8) were tested in third-point loading flexural bending. The initial results reveal medium composite efficiency for the beams tested. An improvement on the previously conceived connection detail (set with six connectors) for the composite wood–concrete structural floor system was achieved by the set with eight connectors. The new layout of the horizontal rebar connectors added higher composite efficiency for the beams tested. Further analysis with advanced rigorous numerical Finite Element Modeling is suggested to optimize the connection parameters. Composite wood–concrete decks can attend a large demand for pedestrian bridges, as well as residential and commercial slabs in the Brazilian Amazon. © 2014, The Author(s)
The pi -> pi pi process in nuclei and the restoration of chiral symmetry
The results of an extensive campaign of measurements of the pi -> pi pi
process in the nucleon and nuclei at intermediate energies are presented. The
measurements were motivated by the study of strong pi pi correlations in
nuclei. The analysis relies on the composite ratio C_{pi pi}^A, which accounts
for the clear effect of the nuclear medium on the (pi pi) system. The
comparison of the C_{pi pi}^A distributions for the (pi pi)_{I=J=0} and (pi
pi)_{I=0,J=2} systems to the model predictions indicates that the C_{pi pi}^A
behavior in proximity of the 2m_pi threshold is explainable through the partial
restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclei.Comment: accepted for publication in Nucl. Phys.
Charring rate for fire exposed X-Lam
Design of timber structures has been outlined in Eurocode 5. Notional charring rate for softwood and hardwood timber is given. For the performance of X-LAM panels in fire, only little information on charring is available and whether the fire behaviour of X-LAM is similar to homogenous timber panels has not yet been systematically analysed. This paper presents an overview of fire performance of X-LAM and evaluation of its resistance to elevated temperature as an element of structure in comparison to homogeneous timber panels. Numerical study has been carried out based on available experimental results. Charring rates for X-LAM panels obtained from experimental results are compared with those obtained from Eurocode 5 and proposed simplified model
General properties of the pion production reaction in nuclear matter
The pion production reaction on was
studied at incident pion energies of = 240, 260, 280, 300, and
320 MeV. The experiment was performed using the pion-channel at TRIUMF,
and multiparticle events, () and
(), were detected with the CHAOS spectrometer. Results
are reported in the form of both differential and total cross sections, and are
compared to theoretical predictions and the reaction phase space. The present
investigation of the T-dependence of the
reaction complements earlier examinations of the A-dependence of the reaction,
which was measured using , , , , , and
targets at 280 MeV. Some general properties of the
pion-induced pion production reaction in nuclear matter will be presented,

The interaction in nuclear matter from a study of the reactions
The pion-production reactions were studied on
, , , and nuclei at an incident pion energy
of =283 MeV. Pions were detected in coincidence using the CHAOS
spectrometer. The experimental results are reduced to differential cross
sections and compared to both theoretical predictions and the reaction phase
space. The composite ratio between the
invariant masses on nuclei and on the nucleon is also presented. Near the
threshold pion pairs couple to when produced in
the reaction channel. There is a marked near-threshold
enhancement of which is consistent with theoretical
predictions addressing the partial restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclear
matter. Furthermore, the behaviour of is well
described when the restoration of chiral symmetry is combined with standard
P-wave renormalization of pions in nuclear matter. On the other hand, nuclear
matter only weakly influences , which displays a flat

INFN What Next: Ultra-relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions
This document was prepared by the community that is active in Italy, within
INFN (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare), in the field of
ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The experimental study of the phase
diagram of strongly-interacting matter and of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP)
deconfined state will proceed, in the next 10-15 years, along two directions:
the high-energy regime at RHIC and at the LHC, and the low-energy regime at
FAIR, NICA, SPS and RHIC. The Italian community is strongly involved in the
present and future programme of the ALICE experiment, the upgrade of which will
open, in the 2020s, a new phase of high-precision characterisation of the QGP
properties at the LHC. As a complement of this main activity, there is a
growing interest in a possible future experiment at the SPS, which would target
the search for the onset of deconfinement using dimuon measurements. On a
longer timescale, the community looks with interest at the ongoing studies and
discussions on a possible fixed-target programme using the LHC ion beams and on

Measurements of low-pT electrons from semileptonic heavy-flavour hadron decays at mid-rapidity in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at 1asNN= 2.76 TeV
Transverse-momentum (pT) differential yields of electrons from semileptonic heavy-flavour hadron decays have been measured in the most central (0\u201310%) and in semi- central (20\u201340%) Pb\u2013Pb collisions at 1asNN = 2.76TeV. The corresponding production cross section in pp collisions has been measured at the same energy with substantially reduced systematic uncertainties with respect to previously published results. The modifi- cation of the yield in Pb\u2013Pb collisions with respect to the expectation from an incoherent superposition of nucleon-nucleon collisions is quantified at mid-rapidity (|y| < 0.8) in the pT interval 0.5\u20133GeV/c via the nuclear modification factor, RAA. This paper extends the pT reach of the RAA measurement towards significantly lower values with respect to a previous publication. In Pb\u2013Pb collisions the pT-differential measurements of yields at low pT are essential to investigate the scaling of heavy-flavour production with the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions. Heavy-quark hadronization, a collective expansion and even initial-state effects, such as the nuclear modification of the Parton Distribution Function, are also expected to have a significant effect on the measured distribution
Semiexclusive pionic double charge exchange on 4 He
The semiexclusive reaction {}^{4}\mathrm{He}({\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+},{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}pp)pp has been studied at pion kinetic energies of 105 MeV and 115 MeV. Signatures from the production of the hypothetical \ensuremath{\pi}\mathrm{NN} resonance {d}^{\ensuremath{'}} have been searched for in the invariant mass {M}_{\ensuremath{\pi}\mathrm{pp}} spectra. No hint for a dominant {d}^{\ensuremath{'}} production, as anticipated from double charge exchange excitation functions on nuclei, has been found. The Crystal Ball () collaboration at has recently presented results
regarding a study of the reaction on and , using a nearly 4 detector. Similar results, but for the
reaction on , , ,
and , have been published earlier by the collaboration at
. In this Brief Report a comparison of the results of the two
measurements is made, which shows that the and data share relevant
common features. In particular, the increase in strength as a function of A
seen in the near-threshold invariant mass spectra reported by the
group, is also seen in the CB data, when the results from
the two groups are compared in a way which accounts for the different

pi+- p differential cross sections at low energies
Differential cross sections for pi- p and pi+ p elastic scattering were
measured at five energies between 19.9 and 43.3 MeV. The use of the CHAOS
magnetic spectrometer at TRIUMF, supplemented by a range telescope for muon
background suppression, provided simultaneous coverage of a large part of the
full angular range, thus allowing very precise relative cross section
measurements. The absolute normalisation was determined with a typical accuracy
of 5 %. This was verified in a simultaneous measurement of muon proton elastic
scattering. The measured cross sections show some deviations from phase shift
analysis predictions, in particular at large angles and low energies. From the
new data we determine the real part of the isospin forward scattering
