INDIRECT UTILITY FUNCTIONS AND TESTABLE CONDITIONS
We develop testable hypotheses for utility maximization given risk averse producers based on a general specification of the utility function. This is a direct expansion of the model posed by Pope (1978). Empirical tests using production data with a translog specification indicate that utility maximization does not always hold.Research Methods/ Statistical Methods,
The Winding Road to Relapse: Forging a New Understanding of Cue-Induced Reinstatement Models and Their Associated Neural Mechanisms
In drug addiction, cues previously associated with drug use can produce craving and frequently trigger the resumption of drug taking in individuals vulnerable to relapse. Environmental stimuli associated with drugs or natural reinforcers can become reliably conditioned to increase behavior that was previously reinforced. In preclinical models of addiction, these cues enhance both drug self-administration and reinstatement of drug seeking. In this review, we will dissociate the roles of conditioned stimuli as reinforcers from their modulatory or discriminative functions in producing drug-seeking behavior. As well, we will examine possible differences in neurobiological encoding underlying these functional differences. Specifically, we will discuss how models of drug addiction and relapse should more systematically evaluate these different types of stimuli to better understand the neurobiology underlying craving and relapse. In this way, behavioral and pharmacotherapeutic interventions may be better tailored to promote drug use cessation outcomes and long-term abstinence
Moral Injury and ICD-11 Complex PTSD (CPTSD) Symptoms among Treatment-Seeking Veterans in the United Kingdom
Military veterans often encounter events with chronic or repeated traumas of an interpersonal nature that might lead to emotional, relational, and spiritual suffering. Research is needed to assess whether and/or how emerging conceptions of moral injury (MI) align with existing trauma-related conditions. Focusing on 173 veterans from the United Kingdom who had recently pursued mental health treatment, we examined associations between self- and other-directed outcomes related to MI and World Health Organization International Classifcation System for Diseases, 11th version (ICD-11) criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and Complex PTSD (CPTSD) in two ways. First, drawing on psychometrically validated tools for assessing MI (Currier et al., 2017) and PTSD/CPTSD (Cloitre et al., 2018), ANOVAs revealed the 57.2% of veterans in the sample who possibly met criteria for CPTSD reported greater MI related to both perpetration- and betrayal-based events compared to those with and without possible PTSD. Second, latent profile analysis revealed two distinct classes based on the symptom severity of MI and CPTSD. Specifically, when examining the six symptom clusters for CPTSD dimensionally, four in five of the veterans endorsed high levels of distress related to all indicators of MI and CPTSD symptoms compared to a group with consistently lower scores. Overall, the two sets of findings suggest the special relevance of MI among veterans who are struggling with CPTSD
Preseason changes in markers of lower body fatigue and performance in young professional rugby union players
This study investigated the changes in measures of neuromuscular fatigue and physical performance in young professional rugby union players during a preseason training period. Fourteen young (age: 19.1 ± 1.2 years) professional rugby union players participated in the study. Changes in measures of lower body neuromuscular fatigue (countermovement jump (CMJ) mean power, mean force, flight-time) and physical performance (lower body strength, 40 m sprint velocity) were assessed during an 11-week preseason period using magnitude-based inferences. CMJ mean power was likely to very likely decreased during week 2 (-8.1 ± 5.5% to -12.5 ± 6.8%), and likely to almost certainly decreased from weeks 5 to 11 (-10 ± 4.3% to -14.7 ± 6.9%), while CMJ flight-time demonstrated likely to very likely decreases during weeks 2, and weeks 4-6 (-2.41 ± 1% to -3.3 ± 1.3%), and weeks 9-10 (-1.9 ± 0.9% to -2.2 ± 1.5%). Despite this, possible improvements in lower body strength (5.8 ± 2.7%) and very likely improvements in 40 m velocity (5.5 ± 3.6%) were made. Relationships between changes in CMJ metrics and lower body strength or 40 m sprint velocity were trivial or small (<0.22). Increases in lower body strength and 40 m velocity occurred over the course of an 11-week preseason despite the presence of neuromuscular fatigue (as measured by CMJ). The findings of this study question the usefulness of CMJ for monitoring fatigue in the context of strength and sprint velocity development. Future research is needed to ascertain the consequences of negative changes in CMJ in the context of rugby-specific activities to determine the usefulness of this test as a measure of fatigue in this population
Designing dissemination and validation of a framework for teaching cloud fundamentals
Three previous Working Groups (WGs) met at ITiCSE conferences to explore ways to help educators incorporate cloud computing into their courses and curricula by mapping industry job skills to knowledge areas (KAs). These WGs identified, organized, and grouped together student learning objectives (LOs) and developed these KAs and LOs in a repository of learning materials and course exemplars.
This WG focused on the sustainability of the work of its predecessors through dissemination, community building and validation of the framework of KAs and LOs and its contribution to curriculum development.
Firstly, a case study is presented which analyzed the implementation of a new Masters program which was based on the KAs and LOs. It was found that these provide a useful basis for program development and approval and demonstrate that successful program development of this nature can provide a valuable opportunity to communicate the work of the previous WGs.
Thereafter, a plan was formulated for dissemination of the work done in order to drive adoption and to encourage instructors with an interest in teaching cloud computing to participate and grow the community. While the strategy included a range of dissemination methods, the importance of interaction with users was a guiding principle. Initial pilots of webinar and workshop activities have been implemented.
Approaches to validating that a cloud computing course designed around the KAs and LOs can meet the needs of industry have been outlined with further iterations being considered. A research plan has been designed for a study to be implemented over the coming year in order to perform this validation
Behavioral Economic Measurement of Cigarette Demand: A Descriptive Review of Published Approaches to the Cigarette Purchase Task
The cigarette purchase task (CPT) is a behavioral economic method for assessing demand for cigarettes. Growing interest in behavioral correlates of tobacco use in clinical and general populations as well as empirical efforts to inform policy has seen an increase in published articles employing the CPT. Accordingly, an examination of the published methods and procedures for obtaining these behavioral economic metrics is timely. The purpose of this investigation was to provide a review of published approaches to using the CPT. We searched specific Boolean operators ([“behavioral economic” AND “purchase task”] OR [“demand” AND “cigarette”]) and identified 49 empirical articles published through the year 2018 that reported administering a CPT. Articles were coded for participant characteristics (e.g., sample size, population type, age), CPT task structure (e.g., price framing, number and sequence of prices; vignettes, contextual factors), and data analytic approach (e.g., method of generating indices of cigarette demand). Results of this review indicate no standard approach to administering the CPT and underscore the need for replicability of these behavioral economic measures for the purpose of guiding clinical and policy decisions
The article deals with the history of Ukrainian industry market transformation, its initial stage in particular. Special attention has been paid to the private capital accumulation in Ukraine. The main models of this process have been studied in the historical retrospection
