    Présentation sommaire des résultats obtenus lors des deux dernières campagnes de fouilles (2009 et 2010) de la mission canadienne sur le site de Tell ʿAcharneh, dans la vallée du Ghab en Syrie. Après une succincte description stratigraphique des vestiges architecturaux mis au jour dans les différents niveaux dégagés au cours de ces deux campagnes, suit une analyse typologique de la céramique recueillie dans les niveaux des âges du Bronze et du Fer, ainsi qu’une analyse pétrographique de tessons datés de l’âge du Bronze récent.Presented here is a summary of the results obtained from the last two seasons of excavations in 2009 and 2010 by the Canadian mission at the site of Tell ʿAcharneh in the Ghab Valley, Syria. A succinct, up-dated stratigraphic description is made of the architectural remains associated with the different levels excavated over the course of the two campaigns, followed by a typological discussion of the pottery collected in the Bronze and Iron Age levels and a petrographic analysis of the Late Bronze Age pottery.ملخص: يقدم المقال عرضا لخلاصة النتائج التي تم الحصول عليها خلال حملتي الحفريات الأخيرتين المتنزلتين في سنتي 2009 و 2010 و التابعتين للبعثة الكندية العاملة بموقع "تل العشارنة" في منطقة "سهل الغاب" بسوريا. يبدأ المقال بوصف طبقي موجز للآثار المكتشفة خلال مختلف المستويات و المراحل التي تسم الحملتين المذكورتين. يتبع هذا الوصف تحليل تصنيفي لقطع الخزف التي تم جمعها على مستوى العصور البرونزية و الحديدية، و كذلك تحليل صخري لكسرات فخارية تعود الى العصر البرونزي المتأخر

    The geography of metapopulation synchrony in dendritic river networks

    Dendritic habitats, such as river ecosystems, promote the persistence of species by favouring spatial asynchronous dynamics among branches. Yet, our understanding of how network topology influences metapopulation synchrony in these ecosystems remains limited. Here, we introduce the concept of fluvial synchrogram to formulate and test expectations regarding the geography of metapopulation synchrony across watersheds. By combining theoretical simulations and an extensive fish population time-series dataset across Europe, we provide evidence that fish metapopulations can be buffered against synchronous dynamics as a direct consequence of network connectivity and branching complexity. Synchrony was higher between populations connected by direct water flow and decayed faster with distance over the Euclidean than the watercourse dimension. Likewise, synchrony decayed faster with distance in headwater than mainstem populations of the same basin. As network topology and flow directionality generate fundamental spatial patterns of synchrony in fish metapopulations, empirical synchrograms can aid knowledge advancement and inform conservation strategies in complex habitats

    Toxicity report of once weekly radiation therapy for low-risk prostate adenocarcinoma: preliminary results of a phase I/II trial

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Increasing clinical data supports a low α/β ratio for prostate adenocarcinoma, potentially lower than that of surrounding normal tissues. A hypofractionated, weekly radiation therapy (RT) schedule should result in improved tumour control, reduced acute toxicity, and similar or decreased late effects. We report the toxicity profile of such treatment.</p> <p>Materials and Methods</p> <p>We conducted a multi-institution phase I/II trial of three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT) for favourable-risk prostate cancer (T1a-T2a, Gleason ≤ 6 and PSA < 10 ng/ml). RT consisted of 45 Gy in nine 5 Gy fractions, once weekly. Primary end-points were feasibility and late gastrointestinal (GI) toxicity (RTOG scale), while secondary end-points included acute GI toxicity, acute and late genitourinary (GU) toxicity, biochemical control, and survival.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Between 2006 and 2008, 80 patients were treated. No treatment interruptions occurred. The median follow-up is 33 months (range: 20-51). Maximal grade 1, 2, and 3 acute (< 3 months) GU toxicity was 29%, 31% and 5% respectively (no grade 4). Acute GI grade 1 toxicity was reported in 30% while grade 2 occurred in 14% (no grade 3 or 4). Crude late grade ≥ 3 toxicity rates at 31 months were 2% for both GU and GI toxicity. Cumulative late grade ≥ 3 GI toxicity at 3 years was 11%. Two patients had PSA failure according to the Phoenix definition. The three-year actuarial biochemical control rate is 97%.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Weekly RT with 45 Gy in 9 fractions is feasible and results in comparable toxicity. Long term tumour control and survival remain to be assessed.</p

    Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on older adults: rapid review

    Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed the lives of countless members of the general population. Older adults are known to experience loneliness, age discrimination, and excessive worry. It is therefore reasonable to anticipate that they would experience greater negative outcomes related to the COVID-19 pandemic given their increased isolation and risk for complications than younger adults. Objective: This study aims to synthesize the existing research on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and associated isolation and protective measures, on older adults. The secondary objective is to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and associated isolation and protective measures, on older adults with Alzheimer disease and related dementias. Methods: A rapid review of the published literature was conducted on October 6, 2020, through a search of 6 online databases to synthesize results from published original studies regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on older adults. The Human Development Model conceptual framework–Disability Creation Process was used to describe and understand interactions between personal factors, environmental factors, and life habits. Methods and results are reported following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses Statement. Results: A total of 135 records were included from the initial search strategy of 13,452 individual studies. Of these, 113 (83.7%) studies were determined to be of level 4 according to the levels of evidence classification by the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine. The presence of psychological symptoms, exacerbation of ageism, and physical deterioration of aged populations were reported in the included studies. Decreased social life and fewer in-person social interactions reported during the COVID-19 pandemic were occasionally associated with reduced quality of life and increased depression. Difficulties accessing services, sleep disturbances, and a reduction of physical activity were also noted. Conclusions: Our results highlight the need for adequate isolation and protective measures. Older adults represent a heterogeneous group, which could explain the contradictory results found in the literature. Individual, organizational, and institutional strategies should be established to ensure that older adults are able to maintain social contacts, preserve family ties, and maintain the ability to give or receive help during the current pandemic. Future studies should focus on specific consequences and needs of more at-risk older adults to ensure their inclusion, both in public health recommendations and considerations made by policy makers

    Viability of Bifidobacterium longum in cheddar cheese curd during manufacture and storage: effect of microencapsulation and point of inoculation

    International audienceThe goal of this study was to assess the effect of methods of inoculation on the viability of probiotic bacteria during cheddar cheese manufacture as well as their stability during storage. Bifidobacterium longum ATCC 15708 was freeze-dried and microencapsulated by spray-coating. The effect of inoculation of free whole cell or microencapsulated cells at three points during manufacture (milk before renneting, at cheddaring or at salting) on the viable counts in cheese and whey was investigated. Microencapsulation had no effect on viable counts, chemical parameters (lactose, lactic acid, total nitrogen, nitrogen soluble in TCA, moisture) or sensory properties during manufacturing or storage of the fresh cheeses for 14 days. Inoculation of the bifidobacteria in milk before renneting resulted in higher viable counts in comparison to other points of inoculation. Bifidobacteria added at the salting step, which survived pressing, were subsequently more stable during storage than those inoculated in milk. The stability of B. longum 15708 during storage was greater in the pressed cheeses that in the free curds. The results of this study provides technological data for cheese makers on the optimum point of inoculation as well as the benefit of pressing the curds in order to ensure high levels of probiotics in fresh cheddar cheese

    Supporting work practices through telehealth: impact on nurses in peripheral regions

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In Canada, workforce shortages in the health care sector constrain the ability of the health care system to meet the needs of its population and of its health care professionals. This issue is of particular importance in peripheral regions of Quebec, where significant inequalities in workforce distribution between regions has lead to acute nursing shortages and increased workloads. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are innovative solutions that can be used to develop strategies to optimise the use of available resources and to design new nursing work practices. However, current knowledge is still limited about the real impact of ICTs on nursing recruitment and retention. Our aim is to better understand how work practice reorganization, supported by ICTs, and particularly by telehealth, may influence professional, educational, and organizational factors relating to Quebec nurses, notably those working in peripheral regions.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>First, we will conduct a descriptive study on the issue of nursing recruitment. Stratified sampling will be used to select approximately twenty innovative projects relating to the reorganization of work practices based upon ICTs. Semi-structured interviews with key informants will determine professional, educational, and organizational recruitment factors. The results will be used to create a questionnaire which, using a convenience sampling method, will be mailed to 600 third year students and recent graduates of two Quebec university nursing faculties. Descriptive, correlation, and hierarchical regression analyses will be performed to identify factors influencing nursing graduates' intentions to practice in peripheral regions. Secondly, we will conduct five case studies pertaining to the issue of nursing retention. Five ICT projects in semi-urban, rural, and isolated regions have been identified. Qualitative data will be collected through field observation and approximately fifty semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>Data from both parts of this research project will be jointly analysed using triangulation of researchers, theoretical approaches, methods, and results. Continuous exchanges with decision makers and periodic knowledge transfer activities are planned to facilitate the dissemination and utilization of research results in policies regarding the nursing recruitment and retention.</p
