    Factoryless Goods Producing Firms

    This paper documents the existence and characteristics of US firms that do not manufacture themselves, but nonetheless are heavily involved in the production of goods. These factoryless goods producing firms (FGPFs) are formally in the wholesale sector but, unlike traditional wholesale firms, FGPFs design the goods they sell and coordinate production activities. FGPFs in the wholesale sector are larger and younger, pay higher wages, span more sectors and had more manufacturing employment in previous years compared to traditional wholesalers. FGPFs are more likely to import than typical wholesalers, though their imports constitute a smaller share of their total domestic activity

    Geological mapping of mountains belts is fundamental to understanding their structure and evolution. Here, a 1:200,000 scale geological map of the central Himalaya of Western Region, Nepal is presented. This map represents a compilation of previously published maps, integrated with new geological field data. The wide spatial coverage of the map and the accompanying cross sections reveal the detailed structure of the Dhaulagiri-Annapurna-Manaslu Himalaya. The addition of modern topographic and infrastructure data makes this map suitable for navigation through the region

    Mitochondrial permeabilization engages NF-κB-dependent anti-tumour activity under caspase deficiency

    Apoptosis represents a key anti-cancer therapeutic effector mechanism. During apoptosis, mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization (MOMP) typically kills cells even in the absence of caspase activity. Caspase activity can also have a variety of unwanted consequences that include DNA damage. We therefore investigated whether MOMP-induced caspase-independent cell death (CICD) might be a better way to kill cancer cells. We find that cells undergoing CICD display potent pro-inflammatory effects relative to apoptosis. Underlying this, MOMP was found to stimulate NF-κB activity through the downregulation of inhibitor of apoptosis proteins. Strikingly, engagement of CICD displays potent anti-tumorigenic effects, often promoting complete tumour regression in a manner dependent on intact immunity. Our data demonstrate that by activating NF-κB, MOMP can exert additional signalling functions besides triggering cell death. Moreover, they support a rationale for engaging caspase-independent cell death in cell-killing anti-cancer therapies

    Early Measures of Drought Tolerance in Four Grape Rootstocks

    Recent and severe droughts in major grape (Vitis)-growing regions of the United States and Australia underscore the importance of more efficient agricultural use of water. Grape rootstock breeding for increased drought tolerance could contribute to continued sustainable yields as fresh water supplies decline. Rhizotron containers were used in a greenhouse to investigate the predictive measures of drought tolerance in young grapevine rootstocks. Deeper rooting distributions were found for the drought-tolerant rootstocks '110R' (Vitis berlandieri × Vitis rupestris) and 'Ramsey' (Vitis champinii, a natural hybrid of Vitis candicans × V. rupestris) as opposed to shallower distributions observed in the more drought-sensitive rootstocks '101-14Mgt' (Vitis riparia × V. rupestris) and 'Riparia Gloire' (V. riparia). Production of new roots during a 6-day nonirrigated period declined 45% to 53% for 'Riparia Gloire' and '101-14Mgt', respectively, but showed no change in '110R' and 'Ramsey'. Slow growth, a hallmark of abiotic stress tolerance, was evident in the drought-tolerant rootstocks in their relatively slow shoot growth before drought stress and their relatively slow new root growth during recovery, especially for 'Ramsey'. High stomatal conductance (gS) corresponded with drought tolerance and distinguished rootstocks best during the first 3 days of recovery, with a mean value for 'Ramsey' 2.7 times higher than '101-14Mgt'. Stomatal conductance during recovery may serve as the most efficient means of predicting drought tolerance capacity in a breeding program

    A Survey and Evaluation of FPGA High-Level Synthesis Tools

    High-level synthesis (HLS) is increasingly popular for the design of high-performance and energy-efficient heterogeneous systems, shortening time-to-market and addressing today's system complexity. HLS allows designers to work at a higher-level of abstraction by using a software program to specify the hardware functionality. Additionally, HLS is particularly interesting for designing field-programmable gate array circuits, where hardware implementations can be easily refined and replaced in the target device. Recent years have seen much activity in the HLS research community, with a plethora of HLS tool offerings, from both industry and academia. All these tools may have different input languages, perform different internal optimizations, and produce results of different quality, even for the very same input description. Hence, it is challenging to compare their performance and understand which is the best for the hardware to be implemented. We present a comprehensive analysis of recent HLS tools, as well as overview the areas of active interest in the HLS research community. We also present a first-published methodology to evaluate different HLS tools. We use our methodology to compare one commercial and three academic tools on a common set of C benchmarks, aiming at performing an in-depth evaluation in terms of performance and the use of resources

    On the Orbits of Infalling Satellite Halos

    The orbital properties of infalling satellite halos set the initial conditions which control the subsequent evolution of subhalos and the galaxies that they host, with implications for mass stripping, star formation quenching, and merging. Using a high-resolution, cosmological N-body simulation, I examine the orbital parameters of satellite halos as they merge with larger host halos, focusing primarily on orbital circularity and pericenter. I explore in detail how these orbital parameters depend on mass and redshift. Satellite orbits become more radial and plunge deeper into their host halo at higher host halo mass, but they do not significantly depend on satellite halo mass. Additionally, satellite orbits become more radial and plunge deeper into their host halos at higher redshift. I also examine satellite velocities, finding that most satellites infall with less specific angular momentum than the host halo virial value, but that satellites are `hotter' than the host virial velocity. I discuss the implications of these results to the processes of galaxy formation and evolution, and I provide fitting formulas to the mass and redshift dependence of satellite orbital circularity and pericenter.Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Observed methods of cuneiform tablet reconstruction in virtual and real world environments

    The reconstruction of fragmented artefacts is a tedious process that consumes many valuable work hours of scholars' time. We believe that such work can be made more efficient via new techniques in interactive virtual environments. The purpose of this research is to explore approaches to the reconstruction of cuneiform tablets in the real and virtual environment, and to address the potential barriers to virtual reconstruction of fragments. In this paper we present the results of an experiment exploring the reconstruction strategies employed by individual users working with tablet fragments in real and virtual environments. Our findings have identified physical factors that users find important to the reconstruction process and further explored the subjective usefulness of stereoscopic 3D in the reconstruction process. Our results, presented as dynamic graphs of interaction, compare the precise order of movement and rotation interactions, and the frequency of interaction achieved by successful and unsuccessful participants with some surprising insights. We present evidence that certain interaction styles and behaviours characterise success in the reconstruction process
