    Posttraumatische Belastungsstörungen in Deutschland: Ergebnisse einer gesamtdeutschen epidemiologischen Untersuchung

    Zusammenfassung: In einer repräsentativen Bevölkerungsstichprobe (n=2426) über ein breites Alterspektrum (14-93Jahre) wurden die Prävalenz traumatischer Ereignisse, des Vollbildes der posttraumatische Belastungsstörung (PTBS) und partieller PTBS-Syndrome geschätzt. Ein standardisiertes Interview mit einer Traumaliste des Composite International Diagnostic Interviews (CIDI) und eine PTSD-Symptomliste nach DSM-IV (modifizierte PTSD-Symptomskala) wurden eingesetzt. Die Einmonatsprävalenzrate lag bei 2,3% für das PTBS-Vollbild sowie 2,7% für die partiellen PTBS-Syndrome. Während sich keine Geschlechtsunterschiede hinsichtlich der Prävalenz ergaben, zeigten sich Altersgruppenunterschiede: Die über 60-Jährigen hatten eine Prävalenz bez. des PTBS-Vollbildes von 3,4%, während diese bei den 14- bis 29-Jährigen 1,3% und bei den 30- bis 59-Jährigen 1,9% betrug. Die partiellen PTBS-Syndrome zeigten ebenfalls einen Altersgipfel mit 3,8% in der Gruppe der Älteren sowie 2,4% bei Mittelalten und 1,3% bei jungen Erwachsenen. Die Ergebnisse entsprechen weitgehend denen anderer internationaler Studien, wenn Kriegsauswirkungen für bestimmte Altersgruppen als nationale Besonderheiten berücksichtigt werden. Erstmals konnte unsere repräsentative Studie eine - wahrscheinlich durch den 2.Weltkrieg mitbedingte - relativ hohe Prävalenz der PTBS in der höchsten Altersgruppe der deutschen Bevölkerung aufzeige

    Do Zebra Finch Parents Fail to Recognise Their Own Offspring?

    Individual recognition systems require the sender to be individually distinctive and the receiver to be able to perceive differences between individuals and react accordingly. Many studies have demonstrated that acoustic signals of almost any species contain individualized information. However, fewer studies have tested experimentally if those signals are used for individual recognition by potential receivers. While laboratory studies using zebra finches have shown that fledglings recognize their parents by their “distance call”, mutual recognition using the same call type has not been demonstrated yet. In a laboratory study with zebra finches, we first quantified between-individual acoustic variation in distance calls of fledglings. In a second step, we tested recognition of fledgling calls by parents using playback experiments. With a discriminant function analysis, we show that individuals are highly distinctive and most measured parameters show very high potential to encode for individuality. The response pattern of zebra finch parents shows that they do react to calls of fledglings, however they do not distinguish between own and unfamiliar offspring, despite individual distinctiveness. This finding is interesting in light of the observation of a high percentage of misdirected feedings in our communal breeding aviaries. Our results demonstrate the importance of adopting a receiver's perspective and suggest that variation in fledgling contact calls might not be used in individual recognition of offspring

    Digit ratios have poor indicator value in a wild bird population

    Early androgen exposure is known to have long-lasting effects on phenotype, behaviour and even fitness, but difficulties in measuring the exposure hinders the study of its importance in evolutionary context. Digit ratios have been highlighted as a potential easy-to-measure indicator of early steroid exposure, as they have been suggested to reflect steroid, mainly testosterone levels during prenatal development. However, evidence for digit ratios reflecting early steroid levels is weak, as experimental studies, especially in wild populations, are scarce. We studied the association between maternally derived yolk androgens and digit ratios (2D:4D, 2D:3D and 3D:4D) using both correlative data and a rather high level of experimental elevation of yolk androgens in a passerine bird, the pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca). We also examined whether digit ratios have indicator value in an evolutionary context by studying correlations between digit ratios and reproductive traits, secondary sexual traits and exploratory behaviour. We did not find any association between digit ratios and yolk androgen level either in correlative or experimental data. Digit ratios were neither related to any of the reproductive and secondary sexual traits or exploratory behaviour measured. There was, however, a sex difference in 2D:3D and 3D:4D of adult birds (due to second and fourth digits being shorter in females), which was not apparent in fledglings or captivity-raised juveniles. This suggests that either the sex difference may develop as late as during the sexual maturation for breeding. These results indicate that, in this species, digit ratios are not reliable markers of maternally derived yolk androgen exposure and that they bear little relevance as correlates of the adaptive traits we measured

    Persistent anthrax as a major driver of wildlife mortality in a tropical rainforest

    Anthrax is a globally important animal disease and zoonosis. Despite this, our current knowledge of anthrax ecology is largely limited to arid ecosystems, where outbreaks are most commonly reported. Here we show that the dynamics of an anthrax-causing agent, Bacillus cereus biovar anthracis, in a tropical rainforest have severe consequences for local wildlife communities. Using data and samples collected over three decades, we show that rainforest anthrax is a persistent and widespread cause of death for a broad range of mammalian hosts. We predict that this pathogen will accelerate the decline and possibly result in the extirpation of local chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes verus) populations. We present the epidemiology of a cryptic pathogen and show that its presence has important implications for conservation

    Cryptic multiple hypotheses testing in linear models: overestimated effect sizes and the winner's curse

    Fitting generalised linear models (GLMs) with more than one predictor has become the standard method of analysis in evolutionary and behavioural research. Often, GLMs are used for exploratory data analysis, where one starts with a complex full model including interaction terms and then simplifies by removing non-significant terms. While this approach can be useful, it is problematic if significant effects are interpreted as if they arose from a single a priori hypothesis test. This is because model selection involves cryptic multiple hypothesis testing, a fact that has only rarely been acknowledged or quantified. We show that the probability of finding at least one ‘significant’ effect is high, even if all null hypotheses are true (e.g. 40% when starting with four predictors and their two-way interactions). This probability is close to theoretical expectations when the sample size (N) is large relative to the number of predictors including interactions (k). In contrast, type I error rates strongly exceed even those expectations when model simplification is applied to models that are over-fitted before simplification (low N/k ratio). The increase in false-positive results arises primarily from an overestimation of effect sizes among significant predictors, leading to upward-biased effect sizes that often cannot be reproduced in follow-up studies (‘the winner's curse’). Despite having their own problems, full model tests and P value adjustments can be used as a guide to how frequently type I errors arise by sampling variation alone. We favour the presentation of full models, since they best reflect the range of predictors investigated and ensure a balanced representation also of non-significant results
