Doubled haploid ramets via embryogenesis of haploid tissue cultures
Tissue culture in the oil palm business is generally concerned with the multiplication
(clonal production) of dura, pisifera and tenera palms. These are all normal diploids
(2n=2x=36). Sumatra Bioscience has pioneered haploid tissue culture of oil palm
(n=x=18). Haploid oil palm is the first step in producing doubled haploid palms
which in turn provide parental lines for F1 hybrid production. Chromosome doubling
is known to occur during embryogenesis in other haploid cultures, e.g. barley anther
culture. Haploid tissue cultures in oil palm were therefore set up to investigate and
exploit spontaneous chromosome doubling during embryogenesis. Flow cytometry of
embryogenic tissue showed the presence of both haploid (n) and doubled haploid (2n)
cells indicating spontaneous doubling. Completely doubled haploid ramets were
regenerated suggesting that doubling occurred during the first mitoses of
embryogenesis. This is the first report of doubled haploid production in oil palm via
haploid tissue culture. The method provides a means of producing a range of doubled
haploids in oil palm from the 1,000 plus haploids available at Sumatra Bioscience, in
addition the method also produced doubled haploid (and haploid) clones.

The Formaldehyde Masers in Sgr B2: Very Long Baseline Array and Very Large Array Observations
Observations of two of the formaldehyde (H2CO) masers (A and D) in Sgr B2
using the VLBA+Y27 (resolution ~0.01") and the VLA (resolution ~9") are
presented. The VLBA observations show compact sources (<10 milliarcseconds, <80
AU) with brightness temperatures >10^8 K. The maser sources are partially
resolved in the VLBA observations. The flux densities in the VLBA observations
are about 1/2 those of the VLA; and, the linewidths are about 2/3 of the VLA
values. The applicability of a core-halo model for the emission distribution is
demonstrated. Comparison with earlier H2CO absorption observations and with
ammonia (NH3) observations suggests that H2CO masers form in shocked gas.
Comparison of the integrated flux densities in current VLA observations with
those in previous observations indicates that (1) most of the masers have
varied in the past 20 years, and (2) intensity variations are typically less
than a factor of two compared to the 20-year mean. No significant linear or

Quantum Statistics of Interacting Dimer Spin Systems
The compound TlCuCl3 represents a model system of dimerized quantum spins
with strong interdimer interactions. We investigate the triplet dispersion as a
function of temperature by inelastic neutron scattering experiments on single
crystals. By comparison with a number of theoretical approaches we demonstrate
that the description of Troyer, Tsunetsugu, and Wuertz [Phys. Rev. B 50, 13515
(1994)] provides an appropriate quantum statistical model for dimer spin
systems at finite temperatures, where many-body correlations become

Lifetimes of C-60(2-) and C-70(2-) dianions in a storage ring
C-60(2-) and C-70(2-) dianions have been produced by electrospray of the monoanions and subsequent electron pickup in a Na vapor cell. The dianions were stored in an electrostatic ring and their decay by electron emission was measured up to 1 s after injection. While C-70(2-) ions are stable on this time scale, except for a small fraction of the ions which have been excited by gas collisions, most of the C-60(2-) ions decay on a millisecond time scale, with a lifetime depending strongly on their internal temperature. The results can be modeled as decay by electron tunneling through a Coulomb barrier, mainly from thermally populated triplet states about 120 meV above a singlet ground state. At times longer than about 100 ms, the absorption of blackbody radiation plays an important role for the decay of initially cold ions. The tunneling rates obtained from the modeling, combined with WKB estimates of the barrier penetration, give a ground-state energy 200 +/- 30 meV above the energy of the monoanion plus a free electron and a ground-state lifetime of the order of 20 s. Quasar Evolution and the Baldwin Effect in the Large Bright Quasar Survey
From a large homogeneous sample of optical/UV emission line measurements for
993 quasars from the Large Bright Quasar Survey (LBQS), we study correlations
between emission line equivalent width and both restframe ultraviolet
luminosity (i.e., the Baldwin Effect) and redshift. Our semi-automated spectral
fitting accounts for absorption lines, fits blended iron emission, and provides
upper limits to weak emission lines. Use of a single large, well-defined sample
and consistent emission line measurements allows us to sensitively detect many
correlations, most of which have been previously noted. A new finding is a
significant Baldwin Effect in UV iron emission. Further analysis reveals that
the primary correlation of iron emission strength is probably with redshift,
implying an evolutionary rather than a luminosity effect. We show that for most
emission lines with a significant Baldwin Effect, and for some without,
evolution dominates over luminosity effects. This may reflect evolution in
abundances, in cloud covering factors, or overall cloud conditions such as
density and ionization. We find that in our sample, a putative correlation
between Baldwin Effect slope and the ionization potential is not significant.
Uniform measurements of other large quasar samples will extend the luminosity
and redshift range of such spectral studies and provide even stronger tests of

Stub model for dephasing in a quantum dot
As an alternative to Buttiker's dephasing lead model, we examine a dephasing
stub. Both models are phenomenological ways to introduce decoherence in chaotic
scattering by a quantum dot. The difference is that the dephasing lead opens up
the quantum dot by connecting it to an electron reservoir, while the dephasing
stub is closed at one end. Voltage fluctuations in the stub take over the
dephasing role from the reservoir. Because the quantum dot with dephasing lead
is an open system, only expectation values of the current can be forced to
vanish at low frequencies, while the outcome of an individual measurement is
not so constrained. The quantum dot with dephasing stub, in contrast, remains a
closed system with a vanishing low-frequency current at each and every
measurement. This difference is a crucial one in the context of quantum
algorithms, which are based on the outcome of individual measurements rather
than on expectation values. We demonstrate that the dephasing stub model has a
parameter range in which the voltage fluctuations are sufficiently strong to
suppress quantum interference effects, while still being sufficiently weak that
classical current fluctuations can be neglected relative to the nonequilibrium

Superficial siderosis: a potential diagnostic marker of cerebral amyloid angiopathy in Alzheimer disease
Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Superficial siderosis of the central nervous system results from chronic bleeding in the superficial layers of the cortex and spinal cord. In cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), there is amyloid deposition in meningeal and meningo-cortical arteries and capillaries, predisposing them to rupture. CAA is frequently associated with Alzheimer disease (AD).
METHODS: We report a series of 3 AD patients with MRI evidence of superficial siderosis. Two had neuropathological examination confirming superficial siderosis, AD, and CAA.
CONCLUSIONS: Superficial siderosis should be recognized within the spectrum of AD with CAA and considered as a possible antemortem diagnostic feature
A New Method of Measuring 81Kr and 85Kr Abundances in Environmental Samples
We demonstrate a new method for determining the 81Kr/Kr ratio in
environmental samples based upon two measurements: the 85Kr/81Kr ratio measured
by Atom Trap Trace Analysis (ATTA) and the 85Kr/Kr ratio measured by Low-Level
Counting (LLC). This method can be used to determine the mean residence time of
groundwater in the range of 10^5 - 10^6 a. It requires a sample of 100 micro-l
STP of Kr extracted from approximately two tons of water. With modern
atmospheric Kr samples, we demonstrate that the ratios measured by ATTA and LLC
are directly proportional to each other within the measurement error of +/-
10%; we calibrate the 81Kr/Kr ratio of modern air measured using this method;
and we show that the 81Kr/Kr ratios of samples extracted from air before and
after the development of the nuclear industry are identical within the
measurement error
Vortices on Hyperbolic Surfaces
It is shown that abelian Higgs vortices on a hyperbolic surface can be
constructed geometrically from holomorphic maps , where is also
a hyperbolic surface. The fields depend on and on the metrics of and
. The vortex centres are the ramification points, where the derivative of
vanishes. The magnitude of the Higgs field measures the extent to which
is locally an isometry.
Witten's construction of vortices on the hyperbolic plane is rederived, and
new examples of vortices on compact surfaces and on hyperbolic surfaces of
revolution are obtained. The interpretation of these solutions as
SO(3)-invariant, self-dual SU(2) Yang--Mills fields on is also given.Comment: Revised version: new section on four-dimensional interpretation of
