Laminin and fibronectin in rectal adenocarcinoma: relationship to tumour grade, stage and metastasis.
Using an immunoperoxidase procedure, we have examined the distribution of laminin and fibronectin in normal human large intestinal mucosa and in 50 cases of rectal adenocarcinoma for which extensive clinical follow up was available. In normal tissue, laminin staining was largely restricted to basement membranes, including that underlying the epithelial cells, whereas fibronectin was found in both basement membranes and surrounding connective tissue. In rectal carcinomas, basement membrane-like staining for laminin associated with tumour cells was found in only 27 out of the 50 cases studied. Statistical analysis showed that the presence of laminin-containing basement membranes was correlated with low histological grade (well-differentiated tumours), but not with stage (progression through the bowel wall and the development of lymph node metastases) and, in a highly significant way, with a reduced incidence of distant metastases and increased patient survival. Although fibronectin was found in tumour cell basement membranes where these were present, it was also found in the stroma of all 50 tumours. There was no apparent correlation between the presence of stromal fibronectin and grade, stage or development of metastases. Finally, attention is drawn to some of the technical difficulties in detecting basement membrane antigens in formalin-fixed tissue, the material most frequently available for retrospective study
Fractional Operators, Dirichlet Averages, and Splines
Fractional differential and integral operators, Dirichlet averages, and
splines of complex order are three seemingly distinct mathematical subject
areas addressing different questions and employing different methodologies. It
is the purpose of this paper to show that there are deep and interesting
relationships between these three areas. First a brief introduction to
fractional differential and integral operators defined on Lizorkin spaces is
presented and some of their main properties exhibited. This particular approach
has the advantage that several definitions of fractional derivatives and
integrals coincide. We then introduce Dirichlet averages and extend their
definition to an infinite-dimensional setting that is needed to exhibit the
relationships to splines of complex order. Finally, we focus on splines of
complex order and, in particular, on cardinal B-splines of complex order. The
fundamental connections to fractional derivatives and integrals as well as
Dirichlet averages are presented
Hydrodynamics of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky Equation in Two Dimensions
The large scale properties of spatiotemporal chaos in the 2d
Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation are studied using an explicit coarse graining
scheme. A set of intermediate equations are obtained. They describe
interactions between the small scale (e.g., cellular) structures and the
hydrodynamic degrees of freedom. Possible forms of the effective large scale
hydrodynamics are constructed and examined. Although a number of different
universality classes are allowed by symmetry, numerical results support the
simplest scenario, that being the KPZ universality class.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
40Ar/39Ar Geochronology of Rumbia Schist Complex: New Implications For Timing and Hydrothermal Activity in The Southeast Sulawesi Gold Prospect, Indonesia
The Rumbia Mountains, which in this study named Rumbia Complex is an east-west oriented, composed by a high-pressure/low-temperature, and a medium-pressure/low-temperature metamorphic rocks. The complex is identified as mica schist, glauchopane schist, and green schist. Rumbia Complex known as the location of gold deposits prospects discovered by local communities since 2007. The results of research showed that the metamorphic rocks are as hosts. There are two period of gold mineralization that occurs in this area, namely: 1) Associated with tectonic deformation and metamorphic rocks exhumation as a first period, and 2) Gold deposits related to post-tectonic as a result of hydrothermal activity in the Rumbia Complex. Radiometric age dating used 40Ar/39Ar geochronology, indicate that the first period of gold mineralization in the Rumbia Complex occurred ≈23 million years ago (MA), and the second period were subsequently overprinting at ≈6.8 million years ago (MA)
A Search for H2CO 6cm Emission toward Young Stellar Objects III: VLA Observations
We report the results of our third survey for formaldehyde (H2CO) 6cm maser
emission in the Galaxy. Using the Very Large Array, we detected two new H2CO
maser sources (G23.01-0.41 and G25.83-0.18), thus increasing the sample of
known H2CO maser regions in the Galaxy to seven. We review the characteristics
of the G23.01-0.41 and G25.83-0.18 star forming regions. The H2CO masers in
G23.01-0.41 and G25.83-0.18 share several properties with the other known H2CO
masers, in particular, emission from rich maser environments and close

Tradeoff between short-term and long-term adaptation in a changing environment
We investigate the competition dynamics of two microbial or viral strains
that live in an environment that switches periodically between two states. One
of the strains is adapted to the long-term environment, but pays a short-term
cost, while the other is adapted to the short-term environment and pays a cost
in the long term. We explore the tradeoff between these alternative strategies
in extensive numerical simulations, and present a simple analytic model that
can predict the outcome of these competitions as a function of the mutation
rate and the time scale of the environmental changes. Our model is relevant for

Microfluidic platform for electrophysiological studies on Xenopus laevis oocytes under varying gravity levels
Voltage clamp measurements reveal important insights into the activity of membrane ion channels. While conventional voltage clamp systems are available for laboratory studies, these instruments are generally unsuitable for more rugged operating environments. In this study, we present a non-invasive microfluidic voltage clamp system developed for the use under varying gravity levels. The core component is a multilayer microfluidic device that provides an immobilisation site for Xenopus laevis oocytes on an intermediate layer, and fluid and electrical connections from either side of the cell. The configuration that we term the asymmetrical transoocyte voltage clamp (ATOVC) also permits electrical access to the cytosol of the oocyte without physical introduction of electrodes by permeabilisation of a large region of the oocyte membrane so that a defined membrane patch can be voltage clamped. The constant low level air pressure applied to the oocyte ensures stable immobilisation, which is essential for keeping the leak resistance constant even under varying gravitational forces. The ease of oocyte mounting and immobilisation combined with the robustness and complete enclosure of the fluidics system allow the use of the ATOVC under extreme environmental conditions, without the need for intervention by a human operator. Results for oocytes over-expressing the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) obtained under laboratory conditions as well as under conditions of micro- and hypergravity demonstrate the high reproducibility and stability of the ATOVC system under distinct mechanical scenarios
HST and Spitzer imaging of red and blue galaxies at z~2.5: A correlation between size and star formation activity from compact quiescent galaxies to extended star forming galaxies
We present HST NICMOS+ACS and Spitzer IRAC+MIPS observations of 41 galaxies
at 2<z<3.5 in the FIRES MS1054 field with red and blue rest-frame optical
colors. About half of the galaxies are very compact (effective radii r_e < 1
kpc) at rest-frame optical wavelengths, the others are extended (1< r_e < 10
kpc). For reference, 1 kpc corresponds to 0.12 arcsec at z=2.5 in the adopted
cosmology. We separate actively star forming galaxies from quiescent galaxies
by modeling their rest-frame UV-NIR SEDs. The star forming galaxies span the
full range of sizes, while the quiescent galaxies all have r_e<2kpc. In the
redshift range where MIPS 24 micron imaging is a sensitive probe of re-radiated
dust emission (z<2.5), the 24 micron fluxes confirm that the light of the small
quiescent galaxies is dominated by old stars, rather than dust-enshrouded star
formation or AGN activity. The inferred surface mass densities and velocity
dispersions for the quiescent galaxies are very high compared to those in local
galaxies. The galaxies follow a Kormendy relation (between surface brightness
and size) with approximately the same slope as locally, but shifted to brighter
surface brightnesses, consistent with a mean stellar formation redshift of
z_f~5. This paper demonstrates a direct relation between star formation
activity and size at z~2.5, and the existence of a significant population of
massive, extremely dense, old stellar systems without readily identifiable
